This is the way to see Hoi An . The Hoi an mates team make sure you see Hoi An like a local seeing things of the beaten track these private tour with young students is a delight.
The team are friendly, helpful and informative, and it is free you just pay the entry fees and boat fees and bike hire. Highly recommend the Hoi An team definitely a highlight of my visit to Hoi An

Nam and Trung were amazing companions, and your organization's dedication, enthusiasm, and thoughtfulness impressed us greatly. We had a delightful time thanks to your efforts, and we appreciate all you did for us. Once again, thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Thank you very much Tiền for the beautiful tour you gave me in Hoi An. I really appreciated your explanations about the meaning of the icons and symbols of Buddhism.
I also found so interesting your explanations about the art of lacquerwork, embroidery and the information about the culture and habits of wealthy families of Hoi An. You helped me to understand more and better everything I'm seeing these days and to appreciate the details of your culture.
You are very knowledgeable, kind and a good communicator. It was nice to meet your pupil and to experience the tour with the 2 of you.
I would have liked to spend more time in Hoi An and be able to discover the town a little more with your help. Now I have a very good excuse to return 😉.

More than a simple tour it's an authentic life experience. Since the first contact I have been impressed by their professionalism and enthusiasm. Now, after having done the tour with Tien, I am full of gratitude. Despite his young age he has been such a perfect guide, friendly, funny, very knowledgeable and speaking an excellent English.

I visited Hoi An for a couple of days in October, and all the search results led me to the touristy activities -> cooking class, coconut boat ride, and lantern making. I was sure about skipping them, and after digging a little deeper for offbeat experiences, I came across 'Hoi An Mates' on TripAdvisor. I wasn't sure if they were still offering the experience after covid, so I decided to reach out to them on Facebook to confirm. They are a non-profit organization that includes university students/young working professionals keen on interacting with foreigners and improving their English and are also interested in learning about other cultures. The tours are entirely free of cost, and you would just have to pay for the entrance fees of the places you visit. Ex - In the old town (you can buy a pass in the tourism office, which is approx 60,000 dong), and for the island tour, they can help you rent a bicycle if you need, and it is highly appreciated to tip in the places you visit on the island (mat weaving, noodle making place etc.,)
They sent me 3 different itineraries (1. Hoi an Old town walking tour (covering heritage houses), 2. Tra Que vegetable village tour, 3. Cam Kim island tour on a bicycle), and they will share the tour guide details, meeting point etc.,
I chose 1 and 3 on two different days and absolutely loved interacting with the guides and learning about their culture. Option 1 -- Instead of just walking through the streets of the old town without any backdrop, you get to learn a bit more about the history of the heritage houses. Option 3 -> Getting to Cam Kim island on the other side of the town on a bicycle, crossing an ancient bridge, and cycling through the paddy fields with no tourists in sight, enjoying the slowness of life, watching the locals carrying on with their activities and getting back to the old town on a boat with your bicycle was a wonderful experience (Visited an old family temple, mat weaving couple's home, rice noodle making home & boat making place)
I 100% recommend this. Would encourage tipping the guides well and buying them something to eat during the tour/towards the end, as they usually have to drive back to Da Nang as most of them don't reside in Hoi An (Hoi An doesn't have any universities)
P.S: Thanks to the guides Thanh (Annie) and Tuyen for being very friendly and showing me around.

We had a great experience in Hoi An with our guide Minh. He took us on an off beat tour to explain the local culture and customs through a visit to a family temple, first hand experience of local craft and food making with very delightful conversations explaining the Vietnamese traditions. He also helped us to pick up a few items from the market. Not the least, he clicked amazing pictures of us as well.

After joining tours with a similar organization, Saigon Hotpot (in Ho Chi Minh), I was eager to go on a tour with Hoi An Mates. It made my Hoi An experience a special one to explore the popular sights (Ancient Town) and the local village life with the company of this organization. Making friends with locals and learning about Vietnamese culture with casual conversations was a cornerstone of my trip. Although I was one of the first tours after the COVID travel ban for tourists, the tour guides enthusiastically updated the trip itinerary when we hit unexpected surprises. Both of the tours I had were led by local college students from Da Nang and I couldn’t be more happy with the time we spent together. It was such a memorable experience to immerse myself in the culture. Although it was a free tour (after you cover tickets, food, transport, etc.), I would have been willing to pay 5 times more if this were a paid tour. Thanks to my tour guides, Tuyen and Tien, for giving me this experience!

We visited Hoi An and decided to book with Hoi An Mates after reading the reviews online. I had to cancel one day due to a tummy bug and Chi rescheduled without an issue.
On the day, we met Thien who was friendly and open. He showed us the main sights of the ancient town and explained cultural nuances. He took us to the most amazing herbal drink shop and afterwards we went for a drink together by the river where he shared more of his life and aspirations. What an amazing guy and fabulous tour. We loved it. Thank you Tien. See you next time. Zoe and Stuart

My tour guide Vi met me ahead of time and we spent 2 hours walking around few historical places in ancient town. He gave an in depth information and historical explanation about Hoi An history and also information about the places we visited. I would highly recommend anyone to take hoianmates tour if you decide to come to this beautiful town. Thank you for the wonderful afternoon tour!

This was a nice experience with our lovely student David. We recommend this as a good alternative to the commercial package deals that only cater to the travel companies' kickbacks. This way we had a lovely relaxed bike ride, evening boat ride amongst the tourist boats to dock in the old town. We rode back to our hotel afterwards.
