Didn't like it at all, the Animals were held in horrible conditions and were full of scars. Please don't go, its really not worth it.

I am an animal lover and coming to this zoo made me really sad. In America, there are a lot of animal rights that protect the animals from mistreatment and harm, especially in zoos. So coming here was a huge shock. A lot of the animals are not well cared for minus the capybaras who had ample space and was the main attraction for this zoo. Owls were chained to a post with little wiggle room and the rest of the animals had very little space to roam. There was an area for nocturnal animals and the cages were so small and the animals looked miserable. There were only a few attendants around the zoo, so if a guest misbehaved and was cruel to the animals, no one would be there to protect the animals. I came here with my family, specifically for my young nephew, and I just wanted to leave when I saw how the animals were housed. I want there to be more visitors so that they have enough money to treat the animals well, but I just can’t support this type of treatment for animals.

As the name Cactus Zoo suggests, it is a facility that combines a zoo and a cactus park. It is located right next to Mt. Omuroyama, so it is a good idea to visit both. The feature of this zoo is that you can get up close and personal with the animals. It is a recommended spot for people who love animals and plants, as well as families with children. Make sure you have plenty of time to enjoy it.

For a limited time, admission was free. Therefore, even though it was a weekday, there were quite a few cars parked in the parking lot (additional charge). There was even a free photo service at the entrance. The park was quite lively. It had been a few years since I last visited, but it was still fascinating to see the animals roaming freely and to be able to get so close to them. Peacocks and other birds were walking around the area as usual. This is a tourist attraction that represents Ito.

There are two ways of looking at this zoo: One is cruel and exploitative, the other is fun and amusing.
If you are a person who does not believe that animals of any sort should be in a zoo, then this place is not for you. I do fall in that category, but my husband wanted to go, so I did.
First off: we brought our dog. They are okay with dogs walking through the grounds, but there are any number of exhibits (i.e. exotic birds) into which you cannot bring your pet. So, keep it in mind.
This is a fairly large place. There is a TON of cactus, like, everywhere. Also, since apparently Japan believes that cactus is a Mexican thing, there is a LOT of Mexican music playing almost everywhere.
That said: the cactus is amazing and well cared for and if you're into cactus, you will have fun.
As for the animals: there are many which I have never seen and some which I have never heard of. The animals were all peaceful and they looked fine. Some had very exclusive spots where you could not get close to them; others were clearly on display. There were also free-roaming peacocks, which were beautiful to look at (although if you've ever heard a peacock's voice, you might think it is a wild cat in heat. So be prepared.
There are a greenhouse for more exotic plants, and a tunnel where certain "critters" are kept, and you can view them through windows. That said, the stench of their droppings was undeniable, so you might be racing through that.
There was of course a gift shop and several "restaurants" serving standard Japanese fare -- edible but not delicious.
There was also an animal "show" -- which we missed because of the time, and I'm glad we did, because I don't like exploiting animals in that way. But you can walk into the theater and listen to more insanely loud "music" and you can see the stage and the toys and the obstacle course and you'll get the idea super quickly.
Overall, if you have kids, this might be a fun place to go. We went on a holiday and it was crowded; I can't imagine it being crowded on a regular weekday. Also the price is a bit steep to enter a "zoo," but considering the upkeep, I think it was fair.

Located at the foot of Mount Omuro in Izu, you can easily go to the Cactus Zoo after visiting Mount Omuro. As soon as you enter the park, you can see a small capybara square, and the cute "Capibala" welcomes every visitor. There is also an open-air capybara hot spring deep in the park. In winter, you can see the cute scene of capybaras soaking in the hot spring.

Went there today, the ticket wasn’t inexpensive (car park is 800, ticket is 2700/person) , and most animals has a pay to feed station ( coin exchange is every where too), so I don’t think their is a income problem (we also spend a few more thousands at the restaurant) . But many animal, compare to other zoo I have visited around the world (except China), are not living in a good condition, especially in the greenhouse area, most cages are small, not clean and even have cockroaches crawling all around the wall and eating the food… I also don’t like the idea that the monkey are trapped on a small island in the lake
I hope someone in Japan government will see this and do something about it…

・Adults on holidays (2,800 yen) x 2/Infants under 4 (free) x 2.
・Futo, Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Izu Shaboten Zoo is located at the foot of Mt. Omuroyama.
・If using public transport, it seems you can get there in about 35 minutes from Ito Station using Tokai Bus, or about 20 minutes from Ito Kogen Station.
・If visiting by car, there is a parking lot, but a separate parking fee is required. I think it was 900 yen. (As of September 2011)

[Review Summary]
・You can get close to the animals
・A zoo where you can spend the whole day playing
・Want to visit as a set with a trip to the top of Mt. Omuro
~・~・~・~・~・~・~・~・~・~
・It was a very fulfilling zoo, with the animals close to you, the ability to interact with them, and the background music that gives you a Disney-like atmosphere.
・There were peacocks walking around, and you could interact with all kinds of animals in all kinds of places.
・You could feed capybaras and see baby capybaras.
・You could see cacti in the greenhouse, hunt for cacti, and buy them to take home.
・You could take a boat trip around Sarushima.
・At the event venue, you could watch dog performances that were hands-on for the audience.
・The restaurant had original menu items such as green curry and cactus burgers.
・You can take a commemorative photo with Mt. Omuroyama in the background.
・And so on.
・I had the image of Izu as a tourist spot from the Showa era, but this zoo is still relevant today, or rather, it still offers a much better experience than other zoos.
・As soon as you enter the zoo, they take a photo for free and make it into a postcard.
・Of course, you have to pay extra for a good photo lol, but even the free photo was enough to make a great memory.
・It's a spot where you can spend a whole day touring with your children.
・However, on the day, the children fell asleep at noon, so we left the zoo and headed home. We still had a lot of fun. However, there were still many places we hadn't seen, so I thought it was a wonderful place that made me think, "Let's go again!" rather than "I've been there once, so that's enough."
・Next time I come, I'd like to take the gondola up Mt. Omuroyama first thing in the morning and then spend the day at this zoo. There seems to be a spot where you can enjoy cherry blossoms at the foot of Mt. Omuroyama, so it looks like it will be a huge crowd in the spring. 💦 Still, it's a spot that makes you want to visit in the spring, so if you're in the area, why not stop by? Thank you.

You can touch and feed the animal there! We spent a long of time to understand the species' habits, the park size is not huge but they did a very good job on caring the plants and animal. Some of the animals there could even walk around freely. It's a bit petty we don't have time to eat at their restaurant, the merchant and food are so cute.
Even we are all adults, we enjoy exploring around and it's fun that animals like peacocks are just next to you. We are so close to each other, and i think the kids will love this unique experience in Ito.

The entry fee is 2700/2800 yen for adult & 1300/1400yen for child. There is a separate charge for boat ride 1200yen or landing boat ride 1500 yen? So total will be 4000-4300yen for one pax? Is the boat ride worth it? The prices seem very high for such a small zoo.

According to their Japanese website, pets may enter only with a leash on. However, pets may not enter certain areas in the park where zoo animals run freely such as Bird's Paradise and boat tours, etc., also not allowed in the dining areas.

We received a pamphlet in English. It gives hours, address, website, and feeding guide. It labeled 30+ animals in English, that you can check off✔️the ones you see.
It also explained how the squirrel monkeys might take your belongings, so to be careful, and reminded not to feed with human food, etc. The pamphlet also explained what's available for elderly, disabled (wheelchairs, disabled bathrooms, dotted line on map showing all places with no steps). Also info for parents with small children, what visitors with pets should/shouldn't go along the park, & that they have coin lockers available, etc.
The inside of the print has the map, all labeled in English, with restaurant names, and other helpful info.
