This place is amazing for all railfans. This is the museum focused on JR East trains. The best suggestion is to good outside of normal holiday schedules for Japanese students to avoid the crowds. Buying tickets online the day before will save you some money. There were several experiences available at the museum, but most only let you sign up after you are inside the museum. A few did let you pay more to sign up ahead of time. The website said you can those few that you can sign up ahead via 7-11, but not sure how to do that. I was tempted to use my poor Japanese to speak to the 7-11 clerk but gave up. The store at the museum was worthwhile to visit by itself. You should expect to spend 2-6 hours depending on interest. Note that I also visited the JR Central train museum in Nagoya. This one was better. The shopping was better, but if you were looking for JR Central items to purchase, then you needed to go to the one in Nagoya. One complaint was that some of the experiences didn't have any one there at the time of the event. I assume the people signed up failed to appear. However, there was no "standby" line to allow people to participate last minute. I saw staffers just sat there with nothing to do as the person signing up failed to show. It was a waste of the slots that no one used. Definitely a must visit.

I live in Hyogo Prefecture and can easily go to the nearby Kyoto. I went to Nagoya six years ago. I finally made it to Omiya this year as I had hoped. None of them are superior or inferior in character. But I think Omiya is a good place to go at least once, let alone train fans. Events like the whistle were also good. The elaborate diorama was also great. I walked from Omiya Station to the museum. I walked by the General Train Center, and it was good to see the highlights. It took a lot of time and energy, but I'm glad I walked one way. (I did catch the New Shuttle on my way home, though.)

This is such a great experience. So much to see and do. Easy to spend half a day here. Maybe one of the best Railway Museums I’ve been to.
If you have kids they will be in heaven.
Easily reached from Tokyo and a definite must. Eat in one of the restaurants or buy takeaway food and sit in one of the lunch trains.
Great day out. Can’t recommend it enough.

I visited here twice and the charm still hasn't worn off!
From the rolling stock exhibit to the HO gauge diorama featuring 20 trains to the restaurant with views of the adjacent shinkansen tracks to the simulators, there's so much to do for any railfan, transit enthusiast, etc! I've went with friends who have visited the sister museums in Kyoto and Nagoya and it's unanimous that this one is their favorite.
I ended up winning one of the raffles in the phone app to pay Y600 and drive one of the miniature trains which was a nice little experience (though I'd probably fail as a train operator after blowing past a couple stations!) A friend succeeded in getting one of the simulator opportunities that allowed him to operate a virtual train from one stop to another.
We dined at both the View Restaurant facing the shinkansen tracks (avoid peak meal time hours for better chances of getting a table directly next to the tables!) as well as the Train Restaurant which attempts to give the vibe of a dining car but with using former dining car plating for the dishes!
One amenity that I found interesting was that there were a couple kiosks that offered ekiben/train station bentos...and retired railcars with functioning traytables where you can enjoy your meal inside !
I'd definitely come back again especially since I still have to try out the English audioguide within the app. Speaking of which, downloading the app in advance is a must especially if you want to make the most of the visit and to take advantage of the raffle draws for experiences like the miniature train and simulators!

・Admission ticket: Adult (1,330 yen) / Infant (under 3 years old) (free)
・Taisei-cho, Omiya-ku, Saitama City, Saitama Prefecture. Take the New Shuttle from Omiya Station and get off at "Railway Museum Station" and you'll find the "Railway Museum" right there.

・A museum that can be enjoyed by adults and children who love trains, and even those who don't.
・A very nice experience for just over 1000 yen.
・The Railway Museum → Nearby hot spring spot is recommended.

・It was a very fulfilling museum with a reasonable price setting, making it a great value for money for both adults and children. And it's beautiful! The way the exhibits are displayed, the lighting is good, and the place is well-cleaned. The ceiling is spacious, so you can enjoy the feeling of elegance and the excitement that piques your curiosity just by being there.
-You can see 42 real trains (as of September 2011) up close, and you can even go inside some of them.
-You can also experience driving a mini train or a simulator.
-There are also events that explain the history of trains in front of a huge railway diorama.
-You can play in the park with playground equipment that resembles a train, or you can have a picnic-like lunch or buy ekiben (boxed lunches) in the square in front of the actual train tracks.
-You can also learn about five themes: "Trains," "Science," "Work," "History," and "Future."
-You can also buy a variety of original goods at the shop on your way home.
-It's sure to be a fun spot for your children, where they can both play and learn.
・My child is only 2 years old, so it was too early for him to "learn" lol. But even so, he was excited when he saw the real train, saying "Wow, it's big! Next, let's go there too."
・You can also play with the driving simulator with your parents, so he understood that he was "driving" and enjoyed it.
・The Hayabusa driving simulator is very popular, so it seems to be a lottery system. So, we gave up this time. It might be better to check in advance.
・The building structure, where you can see the huge exhibition hall on the 1st floor from the 2nd floor, is also wonderful. It's really impressive.
・In addition, from the window seats on the 2nd floor, you can see the real train tracks, which makes the feeling that the museum and reality are combined even more great.
・I think it's a wonderful museum that will satisfy adults who are established train lovers, children who just like trains, couples and friends who are not interested in trains but want to drop by on a date, etc., for just over 1,000 yen.
・If you're wondering "where to go" in the Tokyo area, why not consider this as an option?
・My personal recommendation is the Railway Museum → lunch → nearby hot spring spot. There are plenty of super public baths, concept public baths, and free-flowing hot springs in the surrounding area, so I recommend playing here in the morning and relaxing at a nearby hot spring spot in the afternoon. We used Hanasaki no Yu at Haraichi Station, which is OK for small children. Thank you.

My partner was very interested in going as he’s loved trains since a boy, andJapan has awesome trains. I went along and loved it! Awesome museum, download the English self guide using the QR code and at each train on the ground floor it gives a brief summary. Soo many trains through from the original steam locos to diesel to electric to Shinkansen. Japan’s rail network, efficiency, promptness is truly something to behold. Don’t miss the 2nd floor dioramas of trains, amazing collection. Great for kids too and lots of school excursions with well behaved children, truly amazing.

I went there by myself when I was in junior high school. Since I've always lived in Kansai, there are many trains I don't recognize, so those who are not familiar with Kanto trains may not enjoy it very much. However, those who have an attachment to the Kanto region will enjoy it as there are trains that they often saw when they were young.

Take the Saikyo line to Omiya, then exit and take the New Shuttle (private railway) (if you don't see the sign ask at information desk) and it is 1 stop. There should be signs to the Railway museum.

I am collaborating on a book about the former Magic Mountain theme park in Golden, Colorado, USA.
I believe the caboose on the train that ran at Magic Mountain for two years in 1959 and 1960 is now at Tokyo Disneyland. Can anyone help me to obtain a current and quality image of that caboose? Thank you. Bill
