Our original destination was changed to Irohazaka.
Within 10km of driving, our range dropped from 300 to 250km, so we gave up on the 45km-long hot spring.
However, we didn't know that U-turns were not allowed, so the climb was scary, and the road was not clear enough to tackle the mountain pass at the bottom. We're sick of electric cars.

I went to Lake Chuzenji in a rental car. When I started to climb, I was surprised that there was no down lane. I was scared that I couldn't make a U-turn and had to keep going, and then there were carps one after another. But the scenery was very beautiful, and once I got used to it, it was fun. On the way up, cars were passing me one after another from the right, and I was also passed by a bus, but on the way back, there was only one lane and I slowly got off the bus at the front.

We rode the public bus in Nikko and enjoyed the route since we were one of the lucky ones that secured seats when boarding. This was around 7AM ish on a Saturday morning.
The bus did not struggle at all with any of the curves and the schedule was maintained up until the rope way stop where it got stuck for at least 10 minutes behind a line of cars waiting to enter the rope way parking lot. Other than that I soon lost track of all the switchbacks and turns that we drove through. I agree that a car would likely be more fun on this road as long as there was no traffic.
Coming back to Nikko I recommend sitting on the left side of the bus for better views from the windows. The trees were starting to turn in mid-October so that added some. vibrancy for the fall drives on this road.

The traffic jam on Sunday was quite bad. We stopped at Akechidaira Ropeway on the way there. Coming down on a Monday was much better. We noticed the many turns but had no problem with it.

紅葉のピークシーズン晴天休日、混雑必須と思い
朝6時前に到着したところ、ほとんど車影を見ずに拍子抜け。
その後ロープウェイに乗り下山した8時過ぎでも、いろは坂入口付近は
特に混雑もしていませんでした。
昔から車酔いの名所？として子供時分から恐れておりましたが
今回SUV車のせいか全然酔わずに済みました。
私のように車酔いしやすい人は車体が大きな車に乗車すると良いかもしれません。

かの有名走り屋マンガ｢頭文字D｣でも登場するいろは坂です。現在は上りと下り共に一方通行になっており、ゆったりと走れます。そのカーブはかなりのもので、特に下りはゆったりいってもちょっと怖いです。
ドリフトとかはやめた方がいいですね😅

ヘアピンカーブだらけなので詰まってきたら避けて後ろの車やバイクを先に行かせましょう。なれてないと結構大変かも。

いろは坂は現在は一方通行ですので、安心して走行でします。昔はこの坂を対向車が来てお互いに譲り合って走行していた事を思うと、びっくりしますね。本当にカーブが多くて、カーブには番号も付いているのですね。今回はレンタカーでしたが、この道の走行には結構速い車もいますので、道を譲ってゆっくりとカーブを楽しんで下ってきました。

How do you hire a driver with car for this route only or while staying in Nikko ?
