Take a step back in time while visiting this. A must visit in Nikko - we walked here from our hotel. Beautiful in every way.

We considered cutting this out of our day in Nikko, but we decided to go and it was definitely worth it. The staff were so friendly and welcoming, they seemed so genuinely happy to help. The structure itself it very big so we did go round fairly quickly. There are a lot of empty rooms, much the same as a lot of these types of buildings, but this one had more interesting exhibits and displays. There were even some craftspeople selling handmade crafts (and making them there) as well as a lovely garden around the back. It was a nice break from temples, not as spectacular as other sights in Nikko but we enjoyed it.

The Imperial Villa in Nikko was a surprising attraction. It wasn't high on my list but ended up being a highlight. The history was interesting, the villa itself was impressive, and the gardens were beautiful. I came right when they opened and had the place to myself. Many of the rooms were very basic. You need at least an hour here.

It’s an unforgettable imperial getaway. The villa, a perfect fusion of Japanese and Western styles (and yes, there is even a billiard room!), turns out to be an exceptional architectural treasure.
The guides, remarkably kind, not only provide information, they also seek to interact with visitors, adding a personal touch to the experience. The discovery of the gardens is simply breathtaking, offering a perfect harmony between nature and history. We travel for these types of places

After a good yuba lunch, our guide Ikuko brought us to the former imperial village in Nikko. Initially, it looked relatively simplistic for its status, but I now understand how it was used and in balance with its surroundings. It is remarkable for not only its many rooms, but also for the quality of the craftsmanship. I don't think metal nails were used in the joinery. After many centuries, the structure looks sound even with hundreds of visitors each day. We were served matcha tea and a sweet. The hostess kindly offered us a chair since we didn't want to sit on the tatami floor.

Honestly, I was surprised how much we enjoyed this. After spending all day shoulder-to-shoulder with other sweaty tourists at the more famous destinations in Nikko, we arrived late in the afternoon as the heat was coming down. The villa, a huge, rambling collection of tasteful rooms, was completely empty.
The villas of Japan represent the grand stye of Japanese homes, and are a worthy stop in any visit. Japanese homes are light, even flimsy affairs, open to the elements, and therefore more care is taken to harmonize the home and garden. As an owner of a loved California-style home, I appreciate the blurry line between inside and out. Tamozawa was the summer retreat for the emperor of Japan, built in 1899. It's one of the largest wooden buildings in Japan, consisting of over 100 rooms in a mix of ancient and 20th century styles. It is completely asymmetrical, with one room flowing into the next around many courtyards. It is mostly empty, with very little furniture on display, and scant explanation of how the villa was used when it was occupied. It is tranquil, and the stroll garden is simple but beautiful. After four hectic days in Tokyo and a hot day in the tourist scrum, this was the first moment of Japanese-style serenity that we experienced. (Your experience may not be the same, but I still think this is an underappreciated gem.)

Lo mejor algunas zonas del jardín y la tranquilidad, al no estar en la ruta de los grandes grupos de turistas. La casa es bonita más por fuera que por dentro.

日光出身で明治時代の銀行家・小林年保の別邸に、旧紀州徳川家江戸中屋敷の一部を移築したところから、明治32年に大正天皇のご静養地として造営され、廃止されるまでは、大正天皇をはじめ、三代にわたる天皇・皇太子がご利用になりました。戦後、宿泊・研修施設等に使用され、平成12年に記念公園となりました。その時代の文化や様式を一般の方々に見て頂けるようにとのことかもしれません。見学中、お風呂も湯船は無く、湯をかけるだけだったようで、実際にはあまりご利用されなかったとも聞きました。
