It is the mausoleum of the grandson of Tokugawa Ieyasu. They say that grandson's wish was to be buried in a more modest way than grandfather. Well, it is still splendid. You need to walk up a lot of stairs. There is a big collection of lanterns at the bottom. Everyone, including nature surrounding the mausoleum, is stunning.

This is an amazing Shrine. We went twice when we stayed in Nikko. Plan on spending some time here to really enjoy how amazing this is.

I've been to Rinno-ji Temple, Tosho-gu Shrine and Nikko Futarasan Shrine on Mount Nikko before, but this was my first time visiting Taiyuin, located at the back of Futarasan Shrine.
Taiyuin is part of Rinno-ji Temple and also the mausoleum of the third shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu, and is of course registered as a World Heritage Site. I learned for the first time that "Taiyuin" is the posthumous name of Tokugawa Iemitsu.
Iemitsu, who had a deep and sincere respect for his grandfather Ieyasu, left a will in which he would serve Ieyasu even after his death, and it was built by the fourth shogun, Ietsuna. Apparently, Iemitsu's will also stipulated that the temple be smaller in scale and splendor than Nikko Tosho-gu Shrine, but there is still plenty to see, with beautiful decorations such as the main hall, worship hall, magnificent Nitenmon Gate and Kokamon Gate reminiscent of Ryugu-jo Castle.

We nearly missed this, not realising it was a separate place to the main Toshogu shrine. It is so worth seeing - the buildings are so intricate and full of carvings. It was much quieter than Toshogu and it was much easier to enjoy the experience.

It is a temple located in the middle of the surrounding forest. At this temple, you have to pay an entrance fee and walk in. Must go up the stairs. But not very high. Enter and be amazed because the temple is very beautiful. There is architectural detail. Plus it's located in the middle of the forest. which ancient people could create It was quite quiet inside. I went when the fog was low and it added to the mystique.

This was significantly less crowded than the Toshogu shrine. I also read that the design for Iemitsu’s was a bit understated in deference to his grandfather’s. Nonetheless the grounds and buildings were beautiful.
There were multiple sets of stairs that had to be climbed in order to progress through the grounds before finally reaching the shrine itself. Each set of stairs ended at the top with a gate. Each looked fancier than the last as we got closer to the mausoleum and also were decorated with large sculptures of flowers or kings and deities. They were quite intricately painted and worth a closeup view.
We also passed the Drum and Bell Towers with their large Taiko Drum and hanging bell.
The shrine was split into two areas. The Haiden was available for worshipping but the Honden could only be viewed from the outside.
One nice touch was the very detailed bilingual signage that provided a wealth of details about the different buildings in Taiyuin.
While it was a short walk from the Toshogu shrine there were a couple other temples to explore next to Taiyuin if one has the time.

Cool temple complex. It's fun to wander around, you can climb a little higher. I liked the huge katana, the size of a man.

It is a true architectural splendor. The intricate details of its design, combined with the creative use of colors and patterns, create an impressive atmosphere. This shrine, dedicated to shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu, offers a unique experience blending traditional Japanese aesthetics with deep historical significance.

Incredible sanctuary, it is worth reaching the top and getting lost in the corridors of its last temple, very few people climb to the top and you are alone.
I recommend taking the combined ticket with Rinnoji
