We were fortunate enough to come here in March when the ropeway was being maintained and so it wasn’t running. Instead we hiked up the hill path (around 45 minutes steep hike) to the top. When we arrived, we were blown away. We were pretty much the only people in the whole complex. We entered the temple to witness the incredible site of a Buddhist monk chanting. We lit incense and explored the complex in complete peace. If you get the chance, go while the ropeway is being maintained (I think they do this every year before Sakura in March) because the hike puts most people off, but the effort is beyond worth it.

Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage in My Order
#27 Engyo-ji Temple
Not being a mountain ascetic, I took Shoshazan Ropeway to climb Mt. Shosha. Walking out of the termina, I found a bus service to go to the Main Hall of Engyo-ji Temple, but I chose, this time, to walk to the central part of the temple. I passed by Kokoronokane, the temple bell hall, and Niomon, the temple gate. The path to Manido, the main hall, from the gate was much longer. I found the Hazuki Shop at the foot of the steps to the main hall, but I skipped it for a while. I climbed the steps and arrived at the main hall.
Mani might be the contracted form of Chintamani, a wish-fulfilling jewel. Visiting the hall could fulfill my wishes. After the prayer, and after enjoying the panoramic view from its balcony, I returned to Hazuki Shop and had oden and a rice ball. It was a ball rather than a triangle. Anyway, the rice was very delicious. I was ashamed of my being a poor cook of rice. The deliciousness helped me make up my mind to visit other halls.
I, however, tried to walk as horizontally as possible. The horizontal route brought me to Daikokudo, Mahakala Hall and then to a crossroads. On my right, over a steep hill, I found an old dignified building. The dignity pulled me up to the building. No, there were 3 halls: Jogyodo, Jikido, and Daikodo clockwise. Monks used to train themselves in Jogyodo, had meals in Jikido, and listened to lectures in Daikodo. From the balcony of Jikido, I saw another old divine building. The scene finally led me to Kaizando, where the founder of the temple is enshrined. I walked into the very depth of the temple.
I went down the mountain with my mind filled and my stomach empty again. I knew there was a Japanese sweetshop near the ropeway station. What I had wasn’t a sweet but a bowl of boiled rice with chicken and an egg.

Hello, I am thinking of visiting near the end of December and will be travelling alone. How busy is this and would it be safe to travel alone. Thanks

Its a major temple so very safe. As it is mainly accessible by cable car, you are guaranteed to have other travellers with you when you disembark. There are officials at the cable car, temple and other buildings and also monks. In mid November there did not appear to be too many travellers on the mountain but we were never truly alone and the cable cars, which run every 15 minutes & hold about 60 people were almost full. Buy a round ticket for the bus/ropeway from the ticket office at the train station. Its a magical place and definitely worth a visit.

No problem if you do not speak Japanese. The people in Japan knows exactly what you want if you just give them some indication, for example prepared info or photo on a paper or your smartphone. Furthermore reservation is not needed for Shoshazan Engyoji.

Hi!
May I ask the average time to go around Engyoji and back to the ropeway? Approximate hours of stay in the mountain.
Thanks!

From memory, waiting for the bus, the bus trip to the rope way, the rope way itself and then walking around the area - would have taken a good 2+ hours. I'd allow 3 - 4 hours to visit there. Do I think it was worth it, yes. It was so peaceful and serene up in the mountain and the Shrine is stunning. Himeji Castle in contrast has so many people visiting.

I will visit Himeji castle in early December this year and will visit Shoshazan too. How to get to Shoshazan from Himeji castle?.

we caught a bus to the shoshazan ropeway from the himeji bus stops opposite the train station, it is clearly signposted and i believe that tourist information leaflets tell you what number bus to catch.
This bus also stops outside the entrance to himeji castle.
it takes about 20 mins by bus.
it is well worth going but can get busy after lunchtime.
