If you are planning to spend a day visiting Nara and the Nara Koen (Deer Park), it is nice to detour over to the Naramachi district and have a self-guided visit of the surrounding area that has plenty of traditional Japanese townhouses. This area is definitely a much quieter area of Nara without all the tourists.
Stop by the Lattice House- free admission inside to see how a Japanese merchant townhouse looked during the Edo Period. You need to remove your shoes to walk in the two floors so prepare with a pair of socks on. The townhouse is well preserved and worth a walk through to visualize how well-built it was. There are hidden closets and drawers under the staircase, a miniature central courtyard that served as a garden, and plenty of lattice windows.
The receptionist was very gracious for our stop to visit the Lattice House and thanked us with offering our choice of an origami to take with us. There is also an eki stamp available at the entrance.
It was nice to walk through this merchant area and how it has still retained the Edo period look as many residents still follow Japanese customs by hanging strings of bright red colored balls-- usually three-four together outside their front doorways. They are called migawari zaru-- known as a monkey charm that helps protect the residents from harm. Some were quite faded so it has probably been there for awhile. It is definitely an enjoyable walk through here to appreciated Japan's unique culture and customs.

I went all the way through Mochiidono Center Street and went out to the Naramachi area. New shops such as cafes and general stores blend into the quiet old townscape. A series of red dolls called Koshin hang from a private house. They say it's about getting rid of disasters and diseases. It's cute. There was a hall called Koshindo, which seemed to protect the town. Calm down, walk quietly and slowly, and if you get tired, take a break at the cafe.

The second attraction of Nara.
A traditional neighborhood. It includes a merchant's house that can be visited for free. (Naramachi lattice house)
There are also restaurants but the main thing is to walk around and see the houses.

Even though it was early November, I was drenched in sweat even in short sleeves except in the morning and evening.
You'll have to walk quite a bit to explore, so it's a good idea to have a map in mind.
There are many small shops, with the feeling that private homes have been turned into cafes and general stores.

This area has some very beautiful old buildings. Koshino Le is a reconstruction of an old Japanese house. It is free. There are also some lovely little shops which are much cheaper then the touristy ones. Bought a lovely linen scarf . Good cafes nearby to have lunch. If you like architecture this area is very interesting.

A little south of Sarusawa-ike Pond in Nara City, around Gangoji Temple, is called Naramachi, where many old wooden houses remain. It's a great place to take a stroll and take photos.

Quite ugly neighborhood, without character. It's hard to look for pretty houses. Worthless compared to Takayama or Kurashiki, or certain areas of Kyoto or Tokyo. In short, in Nara, you have to concentrate on the temples!

Naramachi takes time. The very narrow old streets and the old houses are worth seeing. The hustle and bustle in the shopping streets is great.

When they say old town, I was expecting more buzz and shops. There were a few shops that was really quaint and nice to take some photos but unfortunately, didnt walk away impressed.

近鉄奈良駅の南あたりの一帯。元興寺の旧境内が本来の奈良町。古い街並みが残っていて、老舗の商家や民家も残っています。街歩きが楽しいところです。
