The temple is associated with Murasaki Shikibu, the central character in the historical drama, Hikaru Kimi. My wife and I took a leisurely stroll through the grounds, taking in some amazing views. Also, the special display for Hikaru was good!

The autumn colors of Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine I visited the day before had not yet reached their peak, so it was beyond my expectations that the autumn colors of Ishiyama Temple were so wonderful. The autumn colors around Tahoto and Hondo and the upside-down autumn colors at Ogaya were brilliant. November 28, 2024

I usually go out to see the autumn colors in Kyoto, but this time I visited Ishiyama-dera Temple in Shiga for the first time and enjoyed the changing colors.
From Kyoto Station, take JR to Ishiyama Station, and take the Keihan Bus from the front of the station to Ishiyama-dera Sanmon-mae Station in 10 minutes. As soon as you walk, you will see Dongdaemun Gate. If you follow the approach with autumn colors, you will find a toll booth, where supersets including Taiga Drama Hall are 1600 yen, and only entering the mountain is 600 yen. I saw a stunning gradation of autumn colors and a silicic limestone stone mountain.
We arrived around 8:50, but we already had a few sightseeing buses, and we could see the influence of the historical drama. I recommend coming early. It's better to use the toilet there if the parking lot is empty. Next to the toll booth is very busy.

I visited Ishiyama-dera Temple to avoid the crowds in Kyoto.
At Shinosho, you pay an entrance fee of 600 yen and climb a steep flight of stairs towards the main hall.
That said, the distance is not so great, it goes forward all at once. The elderly were also climbing.
The natural monument, quartzite (which is said to be the origin of Ishiyama-dera Temple), was a sight to behold.

He made his first pilgrimage in several years.
Originally it was a time of high crowds, but due to the influence of the historical drama
It was even busier than the past period I can remember, and the parking lot was nearly full before 9 o'clock,
There was a longer line on the approach than I had ever seen before.
The main attraction is the huge stone, a natural monument in the precincts of Ishiyama-dera Temple.
When the maple leaves are beautiful, when the fresh green or autumn colors
Personally, I think it's the best season to look like a megalith.
There was also a line in the main shrine goshuincho
The line went faster than expected and was accepted about 10 minutes from the entrance,
After that, I was grateful to see many hidden Buddha statues in the inner sanctuary.
I also saw the Murasaki Shikibu exhibition.
It took about 30 minutes because of the entrance restrictions.
It changes a little bit with each visit.
Some places, such as Murasaki Shikibu no Ma and Tsukimitei, remain the same
I have made countless pilgrimages since I was a child, and I feel safe.
I will visit you again to pray.

Since I've been staying at hotels in Kyoto and Shiga for 12 nights in a row, I used a one-day pass for the Keihan Otsu line to visit the temple for the first time in decades.
Apart from the entrance fee (600 yen), I was annoyed by the repeated, aggressive attempts to visit the Taiga Drama Museum and Hojokan (exhibition hall), which I was not interested in (entering all of them would cost about 2000 yen).
The temple grounds map I was given when I entered the temple was really just a rough map and was almost useless. The temple grounds are located on the slope of the mountain, so there are lots of steep stairs and slopes. It was a strange temple grounds map that meant I ended up going to Hojokan three times when I tried to get to my destination. When I tried to get to my destination, it turned out to be on my way home, and the staff were all idiots and not very helpful.
The worst part was the elderly woman at Hojokan. I went up and down the same slopes and stairs in the temple grounds many times, but I couldn't get to my destination, so I asked the elderly woman, who told me all sorts of random things. A typical example was, "Lake Biwa used to be up to the place where you paid the mountain entrance fee (where Murasaki Shikibu lived)."
If you can't explain it properly by lying, just say you don't know.
"It's true that Lake Biwa cannot (could not) be seen from the temple grounds." What the elderly woman was saying was that the banks of the Seta River, the only river that flows from Lake Biwa, are winding (other staff had said this, and it matches what I had researched). When I tried to get to my destination, I arrived at the Hojokan where the elderly woman was. ...
When I saw her again the second time, she was "talking bad about me (the things she said were clearly identifying me)."
I complained at the entrance and left. Ishiyama-dera Temple seems to boast that "Murasaki Shikibu got the idea for The Tale of Genji while looking at Lake Biwa from Ishiyama-dera Temple," but I can't help but wonder, where can you see Lake Biwa from?
I hope that divine punishment will be meted out to temples and shrines that are being manipulated by historical dramas and are working hard to make money.

I visited on April 6th. I stayed in Omihachiman, so I decided to go and see cherry blossoms outside of Kyoto. Due to the influence of the historical drama, a drama hall was built in the temple grounds. As the name Ishiyama-dera suggests, there is a huge rock in front of the main hall. The cherry blossoms are in front of the main hall and further up the mountain, so it is best to wear comfortable sneakers.

I visited the temple on March 1st to enjoy the plum grove during Umetsukushi (February 18th - March 18th, 2024) in conjunction with Jyuchosei no Sato. There are three plum gardens in the temple grounds, the First Plum Garden, the Second Plum Garden, and the Third Plum Garden, and the Third Plum Garden was almost finished. On the other hand, the Wollastonite Plum Garden is famous for its unique scenery in the temple grounds, and I learned for the first time that there is a stone-cut garden (see attached photo) in addition to the First Plum Garden. If you have the opportunity to visit Ishiyama-dera Temple, I recommend that you do not miss it along with Wollastonite Plum Garden. The dolls of Murasaki Shikibu and her maid in the Main Hall and Genji Room are currently undergoing restoration, and will be reappearing in the Genji Room from March 18th. In addition, the Hojoden Temple will be hosting the Murasaki Shikibu Exhibition in three seasons: Spring (March 16th - June 30th 2024: People Surrounding Murasaki Shikibu), Summer (July 6th - August 25th 2024: Murasaki Shikibu and the Shining Tale of the Prince), and Autumn (September 1st - December 1st 2024: Murasaki Shikibu and the Path of Buddha). If you are interested in the Tale of Genji, we recommend visiting after March 18th. A cherry blossom viewing event is scheduled for March 19th - April 7th, and there is also a oxcart in the garden of the subtemple Kofuen along the approach to the temple, so we recommend that you do not miss it.
