I visited Tomogashima on the day that Tomogashima Lighthouse was open to the public. You can only get there by Tomogashima Kisen. Following the sightseeing course written on the map, I visited the remains of the Third Battery, Tomogashima Lighthouse, the remains of the First Battery, the remains of the Second Battery, and the remains of the Fifth Battery. There were quite a few ups and downs. It's a place you can enjoy for a whole day.

I was a solo traveler and decided to make my way from Osaka to Wakayama across to Tomogashima Island last week. To my immense disappointment, the ferry service was not operating on a Monday. Upon further inquiry with local JR reception counter staff (who were most helpful) discovered that the ferry service only operates on weekends. So be aware. I then decided to make a day's worth by going around Wakayama on public transport, mainly local buses. I will return another time to this mysterious island. I wish to say that there is no information whatsoever on the sites for Tomogashima ferry services, nor was there any information from the Wakayama Tourist Center. Staff there were not able to provide information on the ferry service, so it was a luck of the draw.

案内パンフレットには、３つのコースとポイントごとに数字が記されているのだけど、それがどうにも分かりにくい！
現地を歩いてみたら、その数字が示されているのかと思ったら、そんな親切な案内はない。
一応、最低限の多少古びた案内板があるのみで、パンフレット片手に迷う観光客がちらほら。
9月の残暑厳しい中、ゴロゴロと石が転がる足元の悪い山道でのウォーキングは、覚悟が必要でした。
現地を歩いてみたら、その数字が示されているのかと思ったら、そんな親切な案内はない。
一応、最低限の多少古びた案内板があるのみで、パンフレット片手に迷う観光客がちらほら。

ほんの一部を散策しただけで約１時間３０分を要した。既往疾患者の私にはこれが限度、全部を散策しようとすると１泊２日は必要かな？第二次大戦時の戦争遺跡としての砲台跡とか・・・色々とあるが、個々にはお世辞にも素晴らしい物とは言い難い。単なる煉瓦造りの朽ちつつある遺構に過ぎない、これが和歌山を代表する日本遺産と云うものなのかな？自然は残っているが、人を惹き付ける施設としてはバックヤードも貧弱だし、受入施設も観光地としてはおそまつと感じる。

行った日はちょうど海も凪いでいて絶好の機会でした。帰りの船の時間の制約があるので結構一生懸命見て回りますが要所要所での時間は十分取れます。観光パンフレットの写真はうまく取れているなあという印象も受けますが
廃墟巡り的で楽しい。

30分程の船旅で、冒険気分を味わえるワンダーランドです。旧日本軍の砲台跡などは、経年劣化で崩れてきているところが多く、立ち入りも禁止されているところが多いですが、それを差し引いても、自然の風景、白亜の灯台と見所はたっぷりあります。

Has anyone heard of Ghibli studio Laputa, Castle in the sky? Well, this island was the background inspiration for that animation. It was an interesting island though one need to really go early else there will be a long waiting queue since there is only 1 ferry operator from the Kada port, Wakayama. Also, some instruction was not really clear and lack of English direction. For example, one of the bunker no 5, if not mistaken was closed but it was not on any notice. Imagined walking up the hill only to find out it was not accessible? (Tiring to do so). Nevertheless, for those who are interested, please visit the bunker no 3 which is the place that inspired Laputa, the movie.

Went by boat to this beautiful little gem of an island! Great for the rustic camper, who just wants to take everything with them, rough it out on the island for a night or two! The ruins are quite spectacular as well. Free diving around the island will give you a good view of some nice fish....including the odd eagle ray. Not much in the way of depth, but very relaxing. As for leaving the island...that was not on our boat, which ended up on the bottom of the ocean, but by Japanese Coast Guard Vessel. Rescued.....free of charge!!! That is a story to be told for quite sometime. By the way, there is no place for a person to dock private vessels. And if your boat sinks...you are responsible for it being salvaged!!!! Having insurance on your boat can make that a lot less expensive!!!

8月の平日に船に乗りたいと思いたち、折角なら無人島散策もしてみたいと思って急遽訪問しました。平日の昼間だというのに加太港には数十人の観光客が船を待っていました。因みに運賃は加太港－友ヶ島の往復で大人2,000円、小人1,000円でした。天候不良のため最終便が繰り上がってしまい島には1時間半しか滞在できませんでしたが、第二砲台跡、友ヶ島灯台、第三砲台跡辺りを見て回ることができました。島内は起伏に富んでおり、また散策路や階段も観光客向けにそれなりに整備されているものの悪路も多いため、歩きやすい服装と靴（できれば運動靴）は必須です。第三砲台跡の観光を予定されているなら懐中電灯といった携行できる照明も是非持っていくべきアイテムだと思います。無人島であること以上にかつて軍用島であったことがこの島の独特な雰囲気を醸し出しているようで、時間に余裕を持ってもう一度じっくり訪問したいスポットでした。
