As soon as the morning rain let up and the sun came out, we caught a bus to this temple. It was a Friday afternoon and we wanted to see the temple before the weekend crowds arrived the next day. It was beautiful. To think way back in history when this was a bustling area.

If you are in Sendai and have an interest in Japanese gardens, this is a not-to-be-missed temple stroll garden. It is truly a splendid hidden gem. In fact, even if you are not interested in gardens, you might enjoy a visit to this gem.
We have been several times to Sendai, but we visited this temple garden for the first time on our 2023 sakura trip. It should be lovely in autumn as well.
We wandered the grounds of the temple, photographing numerous Buddhist statues and statuesque trees, and then sought out the entrance to the garden.
The entry point is tucked away next to one of the main halls. The entrance is unmanned, with a turnstile and a coin deposit box. ¥300 is all it costs and it is worth every yen. There was only one other couple there when we visited and they left early on. There are sufficient paths and areas that we hardly saw them anyway.
The koi pond is a focal point for the plantings, but there is so much more than that. The white wisteria pergola was in bloom for us. The pagoda (new) at the far end works as a backdrop for the flowering shrubs and trees.
Getting there is half the fun. After a short train ride from Sendai on the JR Senzan Line, get off at Kita-Sendai Station and walk approximately 10 minutes through a residential neighborhood and an enormous cemetery before you arrive at the back entrance to the temple and garden. Be on the lookout for the sign on the wall (Japanese Temple Garden - or some such wording) near the pagoda.
If you miss the sign (in our case because someone was standing right in front of it), you’ll walk a long distance around the wall until you realize you have to backtrack or a kind soul finds you lost at Shifukuji Temple and leads you to the front entrance the long way around and then onto a city street until you come to the steps leading to the temple entrance, which is what happened to us.

This temple has beatiful Japanese garden.
It is sited in the Sendai city.
I felt as if I stepped into another world when I went through the gate of temple.

Rinnoji Temple is a hidden attraction in Sendai. This is one of the most beautiful gardens I've visited in the region and all of Japan. The pagoda is stunning and the reflection in the pond is worth several photos. This temple is photogenic, there were many wedding photographers here when I visited.

This is a very historic temple that was built in 1441 by the 11th head of the Date clan, Mochimune.
It has a stroll-style garden, and the five-story pagoda, pond, and plants are beautiful!
The five-story pagoda reflected in the pond is also very beautiful!
The entrance fee to the garden is 300 yen.
It is said to be very beautiful during the autumn leaves season!

Like all the temples in this area it is absolutely fantastic and worth seeing. Despite the rainy day we bought umbrellas and faced the road.

Take the train from Sendai Station to Kitayama Station and walk downhill for about 15 minutes to the entrance to this temple . Well worth the visit with a beautiful garden area and pond to walk around. The pagoda is a good backdrop for the many photos you will take. Very quiet as not on most peoples to do list but would go again if in the area.

The park has a lot to offer in terms of photography opportunities.
I was the only visitor for the whole time I was there which made it easy to take my time with my camera.
It seems that it wasn't visited in a while as walking along the footpath I walked into many spiderwebs.
