Every ingredient had a story. Every recipe had a cultural influence. Every recipe step had a joke. Our teacher Khalid made us laugh as he walked through each ingredient, it's culture significance and history and shared his story with us. What a character! He made us laugh the whole time. Also learnt a ton about the Indian-Chinese-Malay cultural.
We made Nasi Lemak with homemade sambal, Char Keoy Tow and King banana fritters. All insanely delicious and we thought all were better than any we had from restaurants or hawker stalls.

Wow. We spent a truly memorable day with Khalid in Georgetown, tasting so many dishes, drinks, tidbits.....gosh! And we learned so much about the history of Penang too.
If you are in town, do put aside a day for either a walk, or a cookery class with Khalid. You won’t regret it.

Khalid was great! We felt like we really learned a lot and ate so much delicious food. He sent extra recipes by email as well that we will definitely be trying, and gave useful tips for the dishes we did make.

Khalid delivered an enjoyable cooking experience with detailed intro to ingredients before the hard work began. He was generous with his time and knowledge and the food we cooked was tasty and diverse! I'd recommend to any traveller to Penang who loves their food.

I booked my cooking class last minute with Khalid via email and he responded to my request within 15 minutes of my enquiry. There were supposed to be two of us (the minimum required to run the session) but when the other person bailed rather than cancelling the course Khalid decided to go ahead which I was delighted with. I had one to one coaching for the afternoon.
We made six dishes Nasi Lemak (Coconut-flavored rice), Char Kway Teow (Fried Flat Rice Noodkes), Egg Plant Sambal, Malay Chicken Curry and Banana Fritters.
Khalid was very knowledgable and did not just show me how to make the dishes but discussed the mix-heritage food culture in Malaysia for a good insight into the use of the main flavors, fragrances, condiments and garnishing used in each dish.
The course ran from 3pm until 6:45pm. I prepared each dish and as we cooked Khalid discussed how to taste and know that the dish was developing well. We sat down to eat each of the six dishes. My only regret was I don’t have the biggest appetite. Khalid did however pack up the Banana Fritters which my partner devoured gratefully in the hotel room.
It was a super afternoon and I cannot recommend Mypintu Plate and Khalid enough after the course Khalid gave me guidance on further reading and equipment that I can get to prepare the dishes that we prepared and even sent me photos and videos of me at work in the kitchen.

Hi Tiago. Thanks for your generous review. I really appreciate it. All my guests are important because we share the same passion. I am a traveller myself and know how it feels to get into the flow of things, what we see and do and the experience as we travel. We have loads in common and l really enjoyed doing the class with you. Besides, we are all ambassadors of our country right bro? Happy travels.

My husband and I had the pleasure of taking a cooking class with Khalid. We prepared and ate 6 dishes over the space of about 4.5 hours. The class was well paced with intermittent cooking and eating Khalid talked us through the ingredients and origin of the dishes. The food he helped us prepare was lovely, and when my samba wasn't as good as my husband's Khalid reiterated that sambal needs to be constantly stirred over some time, with testing and adjusting as you go. He then offered to take mine back to the hob for him to cook for a further 5 minutes. You could really tell the difference. I need to develop more patience for sambal it would seem. We enjoyed having the opportunity to talk to Khalid and hear stories about his life and learn more about Penang, all interspersed with Khalid bursting into various songs. Bet he does a great kareoke. By the end it felt like I'd spent an afternoon at a friends home. Lovely man, great way to experience more of Penangs epic food scene.

We enjoyed Khalid's class as we learnt how to make basic local recipes that we can prepare at home. Thanks Khalid!

My father and I booked this cooking class and we had a fabulous time! We were the only people on the class and Khalid was an awesome host. The class started with a discussion about special ingredients, and then we got to cook 6 different things, and of course eat them! It was hands on and Dad and I did some cutting up, preparing and cooking. Khalid made it nice and easy, preparing everything needed for each dish in advance. The class went for around 3.5 hours and was a good pace. We were sent the recipes and photos of us in action afterwards. I highly recommend this when you travel to Penang. Definitely the best cooking class, with local delicious foods, and a friendly host, in Penang.

Never been one for cooking , I decided to give the cooking class a try and I thouroughly enjoyed it . Kalid , the instructor , was knowledgeable was quite entertaining. The course runs for about 5 hours with 6 different courses prepared. He teaches you about the use of all of the different spices and herbs .

How much is it for an adult to do the cooking class and is it difficult to do as I am only a beginner?

Very easy hands-on class sessions. Suitable for beginners. Briefing before the class is a great introduction to local food. We have had children attending it too. Mypintu.
