‪We drove to the park on our last day at Kundasang, on our way back to Kota Kinabalu. Regretted not doing it earlier as the insights gained during our free guided tour would have inspired us to do more trails and treks and ensured that we scheduled time for Poring hot springs, the canopy walk and seeing the Rafflesia, which is all part of the Park experience but located an hour away (The whole Kinabalu reserve is slightly bigger than Singapore!).

Anyway, the free guided tour of one of Silau-Silau trail by Sabah Parks guide Jeremy was fun and informative and is highly recommended. The insights shared by Jeremy will enrich your Kinabalu experience so be sure to do this first when visiting Kundasang.‬

‪An amazing place. It was 4095m height. There are 5 highest mountains in South East Asia located in Sabah. We rent the car and the driver himself brought visitors for hiking. Jai is an experience in hiking and expert in snake. Know the forest very well. If you need a guide can contact him at +60 14-353 1949.‬

‪It took us around two hours to travel from Kota Kinabalu on rented motorbikes, good weather and low traffic on Saturday. It started to rain when we started first hike. Park is great for ordinary people who do not climb 🧗 highest peak. You can stay whole day, many trails, short and long ones, some restaurants available, well marked and labelled. It is for families with kids, teenagers, even older ones. I saw some people in sandals 🩴 or flip flops. This park is definitely for good hiking shoes, not even sneakers 👟. Pls take water and some fruits 🍇 for whole day, rain jacket 🧥 and jumper is great. Temperature could change quickly. When is great weather, you see mountains around, when raining 🌧️ you have just great hiking. Rainy days are making hiking trails slippery and muddy. Hiking to the top is extra story to be planned and studied ahead, this is not for spontaneous decision. Park has got accommodation and restaurant.‬

‪Its a huge area of which we followed an easy trail. Lovely plants but the orchids didn't flower this year like they should have. Large variety of plants and a nice place to spend some time.‬

‪I had little/no expectations but was somewhat blown away by how beautiful the park and gardens were. This is one of the most highly biodiverse regions of the world with a number of species endemic to the park itself.

Plus the views of Kota Kinabalu were stunning. Unlike Everest which is the tallest peak out of many others, Kinabalu stands imposing. 4000m and made of granite, it is huge and stands by itself dwarfing the range around it.‬

‪We were sad & disappointed that one of our friends had to leave early & return to Kuala Lumpur due to an emergency. Hence, we sent her to the airport in the morning & made our way to Kinabalu Park. It was a scenic drive & we had stopped twice along the way to take photos of the mountains which helped raise our spirits.

We arrived at Kinabalu Park way before noon. Prior to entering the site, we were stopped by the guards at the entrance & told to pay the Conservation Site or Entrance Fee at RM3.00 per person. Thereafter, he told us to follow the road & make a full circle in order to park our car. We followed his directions & saw the Kinabalu Chalets which left us pondering about a 2nd visit. During the drive, we wound down our windows to enjoy the cool air & saw 2 restaurants in the area.

True enough, we saw a parking area before reaching full circle. We parked, explored the place & took many photos of the mountain. Then, my partner asked the guard where the botanical garden tour was located. Directions were given & we headed our way with our car again til we found the correct parking location.

There was still plenty of time before our Botanical Garden Tour. We saw a toilet area in a multipurpose building down below the flight of stairs & headed towards it. The toilet was clean & the water was very cold.

We stopped by a small café as we were quite hungry. I ordered half-boiled eggs (RM3.50) & a mug of Horlicks (RM2.50). My 2 friends ordered a plate of mee goreng mamak & a bowl of mee hoon soup, respectively. Both were surprisingly delicious. Then, we left to join the garden tour.

The Kinabalu Park is open daily from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm. It is a World Heritage Site, covering an area of 754 km square. Gazetted as a park in 1964, it is the 1st park in Malaysia’s state of Sabah. The main feature of the park is Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain In Malaysia.

There are many activities that one can participate in Kinabalu Park. Visitors can roam on their own or join the guided garden tour at 9:00 am, 12:00 pm & 3:00 pm. A guided walk through the nature trail which begins at the Multipurpose Hall starts at 11:00 am. However, there are 9 trails to choose from which can take 20 minutes to 2 to 3 hours to complete, depending on the trail selected. Meanwhile, a briefing for Mount Kinabalu climbers is scheduled at 6:00 pm.

There is also a treetop canopy walk-way for families with children. Unfortunately, we decided to forgo the activity as it was still drizzling & getting dark after we completed the garden tour.

Plant enthusiasts will be very happy as Kinabalu Park is home to 4,500 species of flora & fauna. In addition, camping & bird-watching can be done at Poring Hot Springs which is part of the park as more than 300 species have been recorded. You can also soak your feet or enjoy a hot bath in the individual bathtubs filled with hot sulphuric mineral springs at Poring Hot Springs.

The Orchid Conservation Centre which is located nearby is an excellent place to catch the rarest orchids & endemic plants of Borneo. And if you’re lucky, you can also spot the largest flower, Rafflesia blooming. Kinabalu Park is definitely bucket list worthy! Thus, do not miss it.‬

‪This is the National Park at Mt Kinabalu and is a World Heritage Site. Inside the park is the Botanical Gardens. There is an entrance fee for both. There are a lot of hiking trails within the park. There is accommodation and a restaurant. We came here on a day trip from Kota Kinabalu, to visit the Botanic Gardens mainly. We were somewhat disappointed. There wasn't much to see - either the vegetation or the views, because of the poor weather. The meal in the restaurant was very ordinary.‬

‪A fabulous place , we experienced the botanical gardens which were ethereal and mysterious as the clouds are all around and the temperature is much cooler. We saw the smallest orchid and had a fabulous guide called Sam. Then we encountered the canopy walk 500ft above ground which was exciting, the butterfly garden is amazing absolutely full of wild butterflies, there is a small enclosed section but most are free. The springs are great on the skin and for aching joints. A great day out thoroughly recommended.‬

‪A designated World Heritage Site and located near mount Kinabalu. The park mainly comprises of trekking paths, some of which can be a challenge to trek if you don't have much experience. If you are going to trek alone, at least bring a map and familiarize yourself with the paths. There are some forks with broken signs that will leave you wondering where the hell you are. If you're up to it, it's worth the little adventure.
They jacked up the admission and non-Malaysians pay RM50 for admission starting 2023, which used to be RM15 before. There is a shop and restaurant near the trail entrance. You will see a drawing of a rafflesia on the park sign. But you won't come across any inside the park! Don't expect to see much flora or fauna in the park premises! You have to pay an additional RM10 to visit the botanical garden inside the park. It doesn't have much flora or fauna either.‬

‪We drove around the park road circuit first to check out the sights & the we parked at the entrance & did the shortest 650m Pandanus trail Ina clockwise manner.

It started with a treacherous climb up a steep slope, slippery at some parts for 15min, fortunately, the remaining 30min was easier walking and descend was nice & gentle.

I enjoyed hiking through the mossy forest to see the various plants in this primary (probably) forest.‬
