The current Kostroma Tchaikovsky Street (before the revolution - Ilyinskaya) is a short street that connects the central part of the city and the banks of the Volga. One of the quietest, nicest and most comfortable, it appeared on the “globe” of Kostroma relatively recently - in accordance with the master plan of 1784. It is Ilyinskaya that can safely be called the birthplace of the local cinematography.
In 1912, according to the design of the city architect Nikolai Ivanovich Gorlitsyn, who worked in Kostroma in various architectural styles: modern, neoclassical, Russian, “brick”, on the site of the outbuildings of the Stary Dvor hotel, construction began on a building to house the “Pale Theater” with an electrobioscope ( that is, cinematography). By the way, about the architect - in 1927 he moved to my Ivanovo, but here, for some reason, he did not “show up” as an architect. The customer for the construction was Kostroma merchant and restaurateur, owner of an apartment building, Savva Kononovich Barkhatov.
This is how an interesting civil object of the early 20th century in the neoclassical style appeared on Ilyinskaya - a two-story brick building with a basement. The most interesting, in my humble opinion, is the main facade, facing Tchaikovsky Street, with nine axes of windows with a three-axial frame in the center, topped by a stepped attic with a segmental attic window with a wide archivolt.
The middle part looks more elegant than the “wings”: a second-floor balcony (obviously later than the building itself) with forged iron; wide pilasters on the flanks; arched windows with complex keystones in the casings. The decor of the first floor is quite modest and the only things that catch your eye are the plank rustication of the “fur coat”-trimmed partitions between the large windows and the triangular sandstone on the brackets, marking the entrance opening in the center of the left “wing.” The second floor is decorated much more “more cheerfully” - mainly due to the framing of the window openings: here you have plaster window frames with pediments, and stucco from garlands with a sink. In a building erected in 1913
housed the largest auditorium of pre-revolutionary Kostroma, designed for 800 people!!! The object is very interesting in historical and architectural terms. Do not miss!!!

Здание построено а 1912-1913 гг. по проекту архитектора Н. Горлицына в стиле модерн. Здесь размещался кинотеатр, владельцем которого был купец и ресторат С. Барханов.
