‪It’s a nice botanical garden to visit. We are also lucky to see fireflies in the evening in the garden! It’s an overall good experience.‬

‪The Southern China Botanical Garden is both a beautiful, well-maintained botanical garden with beautiful large greenhouses and a large botany research facility. On my first visit in 2006, it was located on the city's outskirts. The city has expanded so rapidly that the outskirts are now kilometres away. It is famous for its contribution to rubber tree cultivation,‬

‪We arrived at the West Gate entry via bus 46 & a 15 minute walk & left via the main entrance & a 10 minute walk to the subway!
There is four awesome conservatories; Tropical Rainforest, Desert Plant, Alpine Plant and Rare & Exotic Plant. The walk around the garden sections & lakes was stunning! Some lovely restaurants near the exit on the waters edge! Near the exit and some small bridge crossings, there was a lot of young girls who were dressed formally and having special photographs taken! Lots of open spaces for families! Only $25 RMB to get in and free for people over 65!‬

‪Lovely spot for the whole family. Beautiful sections with various plants and flowers plus impressive glasshouses full of lush greenery. Grassy play areas for children to run around, ponds, nice paths to stroll along. All in all a really nice place to visit on a sunny day, especially during the week when there is hardly anyone there.‬

‪The gardens had a great variety of plants and there were many different areas. The gate is closest to the Botanical Garden station (not changban) and it is quite crowded near the gate area. The further you go in the less people there are. We enjoyed the quietness of the bamboo area.

The ticket cost is 20 RMB for just the gardens and 50 for gardens + greenhouse area. The extra cost for the greenhouses are easily justified. Expect to spend 2 hours walking through all the garden areas and about an hour in the greenhouse. We would recommend bringing a bottle of water and a light snack as the only options we saw were due to a CNY festival.

Many signs are in English and well translated. Very clear path markers on the main paths and the gardens are very easy to navigate.‬

‪Super schön angelegter Botanischer Garten, durch den man angenehm spazieren gehen kann und immer wieder neue schöne Pflanzen entdeckt. Zu empfehlen ist sich das Convention Center mit einem eigenen Regenwald inkl. Wasserfall.‬

‪When I mentioned to SWMBO that we’d never visited this attraction and that it wasn’t too far away she told me emphatically that we had been there before, and she didn’t want to go there again. I was perplexed and told her I couldn’t remember going there. SWMBO was equally perplexed that I couldn’t remember going there 15 years ago for a couple of hours. She’s now sure this is an early sign of dementia!

She even remembered she wore a red jacket. Amazingly I’ve got a few photographs from 2005 and sure enough there she is sitting on a stone in the park wearing a red jacket.

Anyway, back to the present. At lunchtime we took No 46 bus from a local bus stop for an hour all the way to its terminus, then it was a fifteen-minute walk to the West Gate of the garden. As we walked the sky darkened and the wind increased, as we got to small ticket office heavy drops of tropical rain were coming down. SWMBO purchased a ¥20 ticket which was just for the garden, a ¥50 ticked gave access to the large greenhouse. Me being suitably ancient was admitted for free. A nice map comes with the ticket.

Just as we finished getting the tickets the heavens opened. Luckily, there’s a small shelter at the back of the ticket office where we sheltered for 15 minutes while the storm blew over.

Note: There’s the Botanical Garden metro station on Line 6 which is a couple of hundred metres from the garden’s main entrance. We used the metro on the return journey. As ever, get a travel card and use this rather than mess around attempting to buy tickets for every journey on bus, metro and tram withing the city. If used often enough, you’ll get a 20% discount for the rest of the month.

When the rain had stopped, we ventured into the park. The park is as flat as a pancake so no steps. There are wide tarmac paths with plenty of signposts to prevent you getting lost, and many of the ‘gardens’ have English information notices about the plants and shrubs. Off the paths it was a bit soft as there’s been a lot of rain in the last couple of weeks.

There’s plenty of large grass areas for kids to run around, and a few snack stalls for ice cream and cold drinks. I’m sure one stall was hiring kites. There are also family four-wheel bicycles for hire, I couldn’t see where from but I’m sure the main gate office will know.

There are plenty of secluded places to sit and rest weary legs while enjoying a view across a lake. There are clean toilets dotted throughout the garden.

We only had three hours to explore that park and that’s why we didn’t opt for a greenhouse ticket. I’m sure we’ll be back to explore this as it looked rather nice. SWMBO moaned about being charged extra if we wanted to visit it as she reckoned it was free 15 years ago. I’ve got a feeling it wasn’t there 15 years ago!

Anyway, we strolled along the paths around the lakes and eventually ended up by the main gate. After nearly three hours we had probably seen much less than half the park and not any of the specialist gardens. Not too many flowers in bloom but the recent nearly daily tropical storms must have played havoc with them.

I’m sure we’ll return and explore more and have lunch in the vegetarian restaurant, but we’ll wait until the weather’s a little more settled but not 15 years.‬

‪Guangzhou us known for its maddening crowds, especially on weekends, but there is so much space at the Botanical Gardens, you may forget where you are for awhile. The stars of the Garden are its many greenhouses (which you need to pay for separately or at the time you get your gardens entry ticket), and the endless varieties of flowering plants, cacti and rare plants. As a bit of a amateur photographer, I must have taken 300 photos of everything I saw over 3 hours, and that merely touched the surface of what was there. Many families were picnicking and flying kites with the kids, so you get an idea of the vibe of the place. ‬
