The place is located in a forest park, and the houses are reserved for the relocation of real buildings from Hokkaido's pioneering period, with each house having a brief introduction and prop models to give a sense of the people's lives at the time. We also visited in January, when temperatures were around 2 degrees, with our 8-year-old children. Neither of us felt too cold. Most houses don't really need to take off their shoes to get a full view, and strolling through the snow in this old forest street is fun in itself, with kids playing with the snow and adults enjoying nature and architecture.
We stayed for over three hours until the door closed. It's a real surprise that there aren't many tourists in such a good place.

the description of the way to the village is unprofessional. given the fact, that tourists stay in sapporo it should be clearly explained, that sapporo station is NOT shin-sapporo station. only from shin-sapporo station you can take the bus to the village.
for an institution that caters to tourists such a incomplete information is unprofessional.

I thought it was the season of autumn colors and went there. I was very satisfied that the autumn colors matched well with this Meiji to Taisho building. Of course, I learned a lot about Hokkaido reclamation.

This was a fun visit. It's an entire little town of Hokkaido a century ago, recreated. You have various family houses, a school, a fishing village, a martial arts gym, and more. Most buildings you can go inside and view recreated rooms, complete with decorations. Most explanatory text aside from building signs are in Japanese, but I believe audio guides are available in English, and you receive a paper with summaries in English. Staff was very kind and helpful. Definitely will want to spend at least 2 hours here, possibly more. It is a bit outside the city, but a unique experience.

We have been to many historical villages, mainly in Europe, but this is one of the best. There is a short and sweet horse trolley ride. Do take slip-on shoes or shoe covers if you want to go inside some houses. We took the train to Shin-Sapporo Station and taxied from there. Go on a weekday afternoon if you can.

It's known that open-air museums were born, at the beginning of the 20th century, in Scandinavia (those in Oslo and Stockholm are the first museums in the world). And it's also known that these museums have rapidly spread worldwide, favoring those regions in which the prevalent use of wood in construction made it possible to dismantle, move and reassemble the buildings elsewhere. Therefore, Japan, with the extensive use of wood in its traditional buildings, is well suited to the construction of these open-air museums.
My knowledge of open-air museums so far included Oslo, Biskupin (Poland), Mystic (CT, USA) and Sturbridge (MA, USA). This Sapporo museum compares well to those I have previously visited.
The range of buildings is very different, including residential homes, doctors’ offices, inns, craftsmen (blacksmiths, wagon makers), factories (ramen, sake, silkworm farming), schools, administrative buildings, etc. I found the Aoyama family’s herring and fishing complex particularly interesting, with the workers’ dormitories in the same building as the owners.
But all the buildings are interesting, enlivened as they are by the presence of equipment, mostly original, and sometimes even mannequins that effectively present humans in action.
We visited the museum by taking the train from Sapporo to Shinrinkouen, then a taxi. But I see that there are also shuttle buses from “Shin Sapporo” station.
A welcome feature: free entry for over 65s.

Absolutely amazing! I bought a combo ticket with the Hokkaido museum and visited this open air museum second.
As someone studying Japanese, i’m not yet fluent. The museum offers free English guides for any number of visitors for any length desired. I had the most amazing 1 on 1 guided experience for 2 and a bit hours today where I learnt so much about Hokkaido history with the volunteer.
Everyone was so friendly and the whole experience was amazing! I’ll definitely be visiting again before I leave Sapporo.
Theres a small cafe and also a small shop on site. You can go into multiple buildings and there are plenty of activities like tea ceremonies etc to participate in.
Easily accessible from Shin-Sapporo via the 22 bus from stand 10 (it’s the second stop after the museum if coming from the station - though 10 min walk between the museum and the open air museum).
Absolutely incredible day out I can’t recommend it enough!

This was a cruise tour, with the guide from the tour giving our initial introduction to the historical village. Beyond that, there is a map near the entrance (in Japanese only), and some information in English at most of the buildings. However, if you are visiting, it would be worthwhile ahead of time to download from their website the English map pdf and the pdf giving English-language descriptions of all the buildings.
I found this very interesting, and it was also interesting to compare this to historical villages in North America. The approach is similar, in this case focussing on the Meiji into the Showa periods in Japan (so, late 1800s and early 1900s). It's large; you could easily spend half a day here. The buildings cover many aspects of life in Japan in the period, from business to residential to industrial.
One review suggested wearing footwear that can easily be removed - good advice, as many of the buildings require removing shoes before entering, due to the fragile flooring such as tatami mats in some of the buildings.
Despite the rain while we were there, this was still an enjoyable visit - worthwhile, interesting, and informative.

An excellent village! We were on a tour with a guide, but the best part was taking off our shoes and going into the buildings. My favourite was a personal shrine in one of the houses.

Any idea if this place is open on 25 Dec, Christmas day?
كُتب بتاريخ 22 نوفمبر 2018
Most likely it will be open. Their website has hours listed and says the park is closed during "the holiday period December 29th through January 3rd." If the park was going to be closed on 12/25, it would be listed. Christmas is not an official holiday in Japan. You also have to check on when the Emperor's Birthday holiday is as it is always near Christmas. This year, the Birthday is on Sunday 12/23 but observed on Monday 12/24, when the park is closed anyway (not open Mondays). To be 100% sure, you can email the park -- use the "Email" link at the bottom of their webpage. TripAdvisor doesn't allow me to include the email address or website URL in this response. Use Google to get the webpage address and click on "English" at the top right.

My husband uses an electric wheelchair. From the googlemap, we can see only steps leading into the village. Is there a ramp somewhere which we are not aware. How about the village itself. We know he cannot go into the exhibits.

Yes, there is a ramp up to the village. If you look on googlemap satellite view, you will note a long ramp on the left side of the building when facing the parking lot. The ramp goes to the building from the bus stop. Most of the village you will be able to see from the outside of the buildings without any problem as the streets are paved. However, the mountain village portion of the village is up and down trails and is not wheelchair friendly. I do not recall any buildings that have ramps allowing access to the interiors. To enter most buildings, guests must take their shoes off, thus preserving the floors and allowing an authentic experience of the interior of a Japanese house. A few buildings have dirt or concrete floors that do not require shoes to be removed.

From Moerenuma Park, walk to bus stop Moerunuma Koen Higashiguchi (Molrenuma Park East Entrance) and ride Chuo Bus 69 or 79 to the bus terminal next to the Kanjo Dori Higashi Subway Station. Take the subway to Sapporo station and transfer and transfer to JR trains and take the train to Shin Sapporo station. (Alternatively, take the subway an additional stop to the Odori station and transfer to the yellow Tozai line and ride to Shin Sapporo subway station, where you will find the bus platforms by the Shin Sapporo JR station).
Upon arrival at Shin Sapporo station, take bus No 22 at bus platform 10 outside the JR station. The Historical Village is the last stop on the bus route. The bus is a JR bus, so you can use a rail pass if you have one.
It seems like there should be a more direct bus route, but I don' t see it.

This was what I did in Dec 2016. I'm not too sure if the following information still applies.
Directions from Sapporo station:
1. Buy a transfer ticket (includes the cost of the subway and bus) from the subway automated ticket machine. (450 yen)
2. Take Nanboku or Tofu line to Otaru and change to Tozai line from Sapporo to Shin Sapporo. (Approx 15 mins)
3. Walk towards the north lane bus terminal - berth number 10 for bus 22. Alight at the last stop. (Approx 15-20 mins) You may refer to the attached photo for the bus schedule.
