Colder than I thought. I found some miso ramen for lunch to warm me up, then went to check out a department store. I found a calligraphy experience there and tried my hand at it. Pretty cool!

Had miso ramen and fresh seafood in Susukino. After that I walked through the red-light district(a unique experience) and enjoyed nightlife. There were many baes and restaurants and it was the busiest area in Sapporo.

Susukino is well known for being Japan's largest entertainment district north of Tokyo. So a visit to the neighborhood immediately seemed essential to us to capture the soul of Sapporo.
Moreover, the days of our stay in the city (from July 31st to August 2nd) fortunately coincided with the date of the Susukino Matsuri: which we attended.
We then enjoyed, along the main north-south street, the vigorous, prolonged performance of Japanese drums, and immediately afterwards the "oiran-donju" (courtesan procession), with men and women in traditional costumes.
Afterwards we enjoyed delicious seafood specialties in one of the many stalls located in the side streets.
Before and after the festival, we admired the glitter of lights of the streets, intersections and shopping arcades, also worthy of Tokyo.
A memory of Susukino's traditional past, as a red-light district, could be recognized by us in the bold female costumes observed both in the streets, and in some parlors that overlooked the streets themselves.
In short, we experienced a rewarding and vibrant neighborhood, as could not be more so.

A lot of Sapporo's attractions are nearby to Susukino so we found ourselves walking through this area quite a bit while on the way to a restaurant or sightseeing. The area is full of shops, bars, restaurants and the red light district. We had some delicious food here and felt safe while in the area but would suggest bundling up in the winter months because it can get quite cold and gusty. We walked through during the day but enjoyed the night more when all the signs are lit up.
The Susukino metro station is roughly in the middle of the area and we feel you have to check it out (or go for one of the restaurants) at least once while in Sapporo. Plan to spend at least an hour in the area or more if you plan on shopping or dining out. Other attractions nearby include Nijo Market, Odori Park, Ramen Alley and Tanukikoji Shopping Street. There are establishments that cater to men and partygoers so be mindful when staying out late.

Speaking of downtown Sapporo: Susukino
Many people come and go late at night.
The city is also one that never sleeps, with many neon lights, ramen shops, drinkers and restaurants.
Many tourists still take pictures of the famous Susukino building's Nikka whisky sign.

It is a famous entertainment district in the city of Sapporo and is said to never sleep. The population at night is about 80,000. Nikka signs stand out, especially at night. The building is packed with restaurants and other businesses. At night, I was approached by my guest-pulling elder brothers, who made me feel scared, so I tried to get back to the hotel as soon as possible. When I came here during the day in winter, it was a snow festival and it was decorated with ice statues and so on.

Convenient location, easy to get to different parts of the city.
Room was not very big but sufficient in size overall. Room was clean, bed was ok.
However, poor insulation from siren noises on the streets.

Landed a few blocks off of Susukino Street... it's interesting. My primary school child said "I didn't know they had graffiti in Japan." We were also shocked by the litering, compared to Tokyo. In the mornings around 7 we'd still see young adults out, seemingly not acknowledging the evening had ended. Beginning early evening there are women in the windows. A salary man groped my butt at 7pm, as I held my childs hand, waiting to cross at a red light, seemingly unbothered that my child saw it. One restaurant added so many undisclosed additional fees to our bill it added nearly 50% and we weren't even drinking. During the hours of 10am-6pm things feel much less rough around the edges. However, we were approached with an esim scam at the clock tower in the middle of the day. Also, the crows are oddly aggressive, relentlessly dive bombing my child as we're walking on the street. Overall the vibe is more Shibuya like. A bit of a "less refined" vibe then I feel in Tokyo in general. It's a great area in terms of having lots of food options, shopping and things to do. Just sometimes the walk back to the hotel can be a little less than ideal, and if you're staying in Susukino, there really is no public transportation option within the limits. North susukino seems a bit less wild then south.

Speaking of Susukino, this big knicker signboard is the place to go!
It was a sight that I often see on TV, so I was quite moved when I actually went and saw it with my own eyes.
It's bigger than I expected and has a very impressive presence.
No wonder it has become a specialty of Susuki.
Especially at night, the colors look beautiful and the cityscape is also beautiful.

An interesting area in downtown Sapporo filled with bars and restaurants offering all types of food, certainly worth a visit at night when the lights come on and the area becomes very lively.

Can you recommend any coin-operated laundromat in Susukino area? Hotel laundry services is really expensive.

We got directions from the front desk and spent all night looking for one. I would recommend googling and have the front desk confirming the address. I speak Japanese and still couldn't find one.

Susukino is the 2nd stop on the subway line (metro Namboku Line, about 8 minutes) coming from the JR Train Station of Sapporo.

When you are an IHG (Intercontinental Hotels Group) member, there are two options in Sapporo city.
#1. ANA hotel - 7min walk from Sapporo stn
#2. Holiday Inn Sapporo Susukino
I stayed both and found that #2 is suitable to me. Both are conveniently located, however, #2 is in the heart of city centre (commercial viewpoint), so many dining options and entertainments are just nearby. Not gorgeous but sufficiently convenient. In general #2 is higher price than #1, but acceptable.
If you are budget conscious, you may try Toyoko Inn, Richmond hotel, APA hotel or so.
