I'll be reviewing the Peace Museum separately, though this is basically part of the same complex. The obvious 'highlight' of the Peace Park, if one can use such a word, is the iconic Atomic Bomb Dome, once an exhibition hall, which was only 150 meters from the bomb detonation but somehow survived somewhat intact while the whole city around it was flattened. Nearby is the Flame of Peace, which it is planned will burn until the last nuclear weapon on Earth has been destroyed. Then comes the memorial to Sadako Sasaki - her story is worth reading on line. All of the known names of the bomb victims are contained in the cenotaph next to the Pond of Peace. The site was a lot less crowded than I had expected, and it was possible to sit quietly in a corner and ruminate upon the shortcomings of the human species.

We were "lucky" to be here while there was typhoon warning, so we had virtually the place for ourselves. It rained and it was quiet. It set the perfect background for the visit. The various sculptures are beautiful in their own way.
The park is a must-do if you are in Hiroshima.

Hiroshima was our last spot of our Japan trip and of course we visited Peace Memorial Park. It was definitely good experience to see what Japan has been through and there was a lot to see. Thank you for showing us those.

Beautifully kept park. The memorials were poignant yet hopeful, as was the museum. We then caught a ferry from near the atomic bomb dome, directly to Miyajima.

There is a children's peace monument: a display of art made by school children with messages of peace that's worth a look.
Right beside that, there is a Peace Bell that's worth ringing. When you step up to ring the bell, think about awful tragedy and maybe wish for no more nuclear weapons. Just sayin'.
Also, check out the Peace Flame which has been burning since 1964. Plans are for it to burn until there is no more threat of nuclear annihilation.

Such an amazing, thought provoking area this is, the city has had to rebuild and reinvent itself from the worst disaster the world has known. I just hope it’s the world leaders that visit and not just your typical man on the street. A bucket list destination for sure.

The visit of the park and memorial was overwhelming, there is in the air a feeling of terrifying nostalgia that I do not know how to describe it, it is not a festive place and laughter, quite the contrary .. our walk was rather silent respectful and short. The memory of that city by own experience is intact and although most want to leave it behind .. it is impossible to

Truly interesting area from the museum to the ruined dome, visiting various things along the way. There are a number of memorials, a slice of the original street showing the damage, an exhibit all about the young teenage suicide bombers who rushed to help and then finally the ruins of the domed building.

The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is a must-visit destination, offering a poignant and thought-provoking experience. Visitors have described it as a beautiful yet emotional place, providing a sense of peace and tranquility amidst the bustling city ¹ ². The park serves as a memorial to the victims of the atomic bombing in 1945, with various monuments and landmarks throughout the grounds.
The Peace Bell: a symbol of peace and harmony
The Eternal Flame: a reminder of the devastating consequences of war
The Children's Peace Monument: a tribute to the young victims of the bombing
The National Peace Memorial for Atomic Bomb Victims: a moving tribute to those who lost their lives
Visitors have praised the park's well-maintained grounds, beautiful water features, and peaceful atmosphere ³ ⁴. The park's layout allows for easy navigation, making it simple to explore the various monuments and landmarks.

On our visit, we could see that the peace museum and park has made changes from our first visit about 24 years ago,
While the main components are the same such as the arch, atomic dome and children’s peace monument, certain items have been added such as a separate small building showing the G7 visit to the peace park and their declarations, a small house with an archaeological display of ruins and effects from the blast, and an underground memorial giving voice to victims.
All of this is free.
Many may be inclined to take that one picture through the centre arch to the peace dome, but it is worth exploring the entire peace park area for all the new additions to complement the previous ones.

We are visiting Hiroshima in April. Going to visit the war museum and peace Park. Intend to precooked a taxi to go there.
Are taxis available for hire at the museum or should we prebook for return journey to ship.
How much time should we allow in the museum.

We were there recently. Transport was very easy - plenty of Taxis or Buses to choose from. A half day was adequate for a meaningful look around the area. It was very good. Enjoy.

We are visiting Hiroshima for a single day in October via cruise ship Celebrity Millennium. We generally prefer to use public transportation to visit historic sites, but we are not familiar with the location of the Cruise Ship Terminal and how close it is to a transit/train station. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations to visit the Peace Park or the War Memorial site and museum?
Thanks.....Rob

I speak Japanese and I thought the public transportation was complicated for me so I can imagine for non Japanese speakers will have more difficult time. I suggest to take a cab since the time is usually limited for those people who stop by the big ship and it's better to walk around the Peace park and feel what actually happened. The must see site there is Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and the park and the dome. To go through the museum will take about 1 hour or more. Walking around the park and to get to the Dome which is aligned to the Peace Memorial will take about another hour. Cruise ship usually have a land tour so maybe you should take one of those. Also the must see site Hiroshima area is Miyajima Island shrine which is Japanese National Treasure. It's 1/2 hour train ride and then need to take a ferry which is pleasant. That's another half and hour. In the island you can stroll around the shrine it's a small area so you only need probably 1-1.5 hour. Be aware of deer because they follow you and put their head in you bag and start to eat stuff!

Is the park open all the time (24/7) or is it gated and only available to walk through until a certain time of day?

The park is open all through the year. But the A-bomb museum is closed on New Year's day.

Hi, The Peace Park is virtually walking distance across the river from the city. Also a few buses run through the top and bottom main roads, and you can also take the central trams and hop off for a short walk.
