The tour was excellent. It gave me not just the stories behind each place we visited, but better understanding of the culture and philosophy behind it. So many important details, which make the history come alive, were pointed to and explained. It was a real immersion in the past and also the present of the place, because historical traditions are still present in the everyday life. I am very happy to have had this tour with Andrew. Highly recommend.

Any season is the perfect season to enjoy this tour with Andrew. I was in Kyoto after completing the Tokyo Marathon and arrived just as the first buds started to appear on the trees. Too early for the famous cherry blossoms but I quickly realized the beauty of Kyoto as it was. Andrew brought everything to life with his deep knowledge and well planned tour so we were able to feel fully immersed in the space without the crowds. You will not only learn so much on this tour, you'll take away a whole new perspective that will add to the experiences you have simply walking around on your own afterwards.

Wonderful and peaceful afternoon. Andrew gave a great sampling of what Zen and Buddhism is about all while explaining how the gardens were designed in Zen like way. That the gardens had been created so many years ago and beautifully maintained to this day was a treat to witness. A friend of ours in California recommended this tour and I’m so glad we followed up

I booked this trip back in 2018 when I visited Japan/Kyoto for the 1st time. It was such a wonderful experience that I am about to book it for a 2nd time as a treat for my Mother’s 70th birthday (as she loves flowers and gardens so much). I have been on many international excursions in my time, but this still remains up there as one of most memorable and best! Our guide was exceptionally well informed, was clearly passionate about Japanese Gardens and took us to incredible gardens to boot! I’m really looking forward to doing this excursion all over again and above all I’m very excited for my Mother who will get to experience it too!

I have been on 3 different tours with An Design, one with my son (16 at the time) and two with my whole family (kids 15-23). And I have learned new things about gardens, Zen, and Japan every single time! I knew I was interested in Zen and Gardens, but I feel like they went from being a one dimensional experience to something with much greater depth. Like those 3d magic eye illusions, where suddenly an image emerges from static as you soften your focus.
Andrew is a wonderful host, and I feel very lucky to be able to spend time with someone with such deep knowledge of these topics! His marketing is a very accurate description: "Kyoto, Spiritual, Insightful." He is incredibly expert with a long background in garden design and botany both in the US and Japan. And he found a way to connect with every member of my family over the course of the tour. My fifteen year old sports nut afterwards said, "Zen Gardens are so cool!" My 23-year old daughter named it her most memorable experience in Japan. And within moments of beginning the tour, my wife turned to me and said "_This_ is what I came to Japan for."
So, be ready to slow down and open your heart and mind a bit, and you can really have your world expanded with Andrew.

We had a terrific half-day tour with Andrew to several temples and gardens. Andrew's tour is precisely why you hire a guide. He was thoughtful in designing an itinerary that worked for us, focusing on several less 'popular' sites, and we learned so much from him about the design and maintenance of the gardens. He was also kind in sharing his personal experiences living and working in Kyoto. I only wish we had spent time with Andrew earlier in the trip, as his insights would have helped us understand other places we saw in Kyoto. Would definitely book again and would recommend for others.

Easily the best tour I did in kyoto/maybe all of Japan. I love gardening and zen meditation but there is an entire world of beauty, symbolism, and design philosophy that Andrew introduced me to. You will not forget the gardens this tour covers, simply majestic. Andrew was a wealth of knowledge he happily shared and answered all of my questions. This prepared me to better understand and appreciate the rest of my travels and garden visits throughout Japan, also got me thinking and inspired for my designing my own garden back home. Not to mention Andrew is just a very kind and fun guy. Big thanks to Andrew! If you are interested in zen and gardening this is a must in kyoto!

I’ve been visiting Kyoto for almost twenty years but experienced more on one tour with Andrew than in all the rest of my time there. The experience was unique. It’s not simply that he’s a talented guide and can explain and explore the significance of what you’ll see. He’s one of the very few foreigners professionally trained in traditional garden design and construction in Kyoto and he has worked for or advised many of the people that maintain them.
What’s so unique is that he's so aligned and grounded in his community that a tour with him is more like a day in the life that fills and sustains these places, a gentle walk leading to unforgettable moments.
I’m not 'into Zen' and I never expected anyone could guide me through all the superficial beauty of the temples and gardens of Kyoto to a much deeper feeling of my own presence in the traditions that they represent.
I think that the real must-see wherever you travel is that sometimes elusive experience of yourself 'being there' and if you're in Kyoto that's where Andrew can take you.

Andrew presented the online Kyoto Blossom pictures and stories to my family in Germany and our great friends in Pittsburgh, PA USA. We were a group of 11 people. 90 minutes with Andrew went by like seconds! His exciting stories, videos and pictures are a wonderful online experience that we could really recommend to outer groups and families! Well done, Andrew! Thank you very much!

We have been in isolation due to Covid for over two years and Andrew's virtual tours have brought the fleeting world of Japan to us. For my birthday I joined family members for "A Walk Among 1200 Sacred Statues" and then for my brother's birthday we celebrated with family on a virtual "Cherry Blossoms of Kyoto" tour. At the end of each tour I really felt different as though I had been away and experienced a change in my life. Andrew blends culture, a deep understanding of Zen practice, humour and love of family on each tour and so you connect warmly with the experience. It stays with you and brings joy whenever I reminisce on these virtual tours.
