I had the impression that the cultural assets were well protected. The cobblestone pavement is slippery when wet, so be careful on rainy days.

The sannenzaka and ninenzaka alleys are typical alleys of Kyoto, not far from Hokan-ji Pagoda. One of them leads directly to it.
Crowded with tourists, it is sometimes difficult to get around. A must-see despite everything from Kyoto if you are around.

Nice little cozy streets. Very authentic and recommended to walk through. Very nice but can be busy. In the morning before the opening hours beautiful to see.

The street with the 5-storey pagoda in the background. Crowded at all hours also because it is a must-see to the great temple of Kyomizu-dera.

Wandered through this area multiple times during my Kyoto visit. Since, I stayed in Gion, accessing this area was especially easy. This is one of the signature areas of Gion and gets very crowded especially during mid day. The cobble stone paved narrow alleyways lined up with multiple shops, restaurants and cafes gives this place its identity alongside the famous Yasaka Pagoda. This place truly shines after nightfall and the whole place gains a fairytale or manga atmosphere.

The most viewed spot on Instagram but very overrated. The few streets next door have more interest than seeing influencers put down their cameras and redo and redo their photos... To avoid

Many food and grocery stores close quickly.
It's just food. There's a lot to see.
Good to come once in a while.
The ice cream is delicious.

This is my favourite place in Kyoto. If u like a more tranquil ambience and away from crowds. My suggestion is to stay near this place and go in late evening and early mornings. U can immerse into this beautiful historic place and be blown away by its old wooden houses and atmosphere.

Cute area packed with tourists (April cherry blossom season). Lots of shops, but we did not spend much time going into many of them. We only stopped for matcha tiramisu on the way to the temple. Saw the famous cherry tree before it fell.

The narrow streets leading up to Kiyomizudera are an attraction in itself to some. There are so many different/same places selling traditional sweets, matcha, souvenirs, ice cream and so on. It is worth a look if you have the time to go into a few places.
We stopped in a sweet shop that had a cafe in the far back where we bought a matcha snack and cold drink which was welcome (and air conditioned) on a terribly hot day.
Curious that of all the things to see, many want to stop at the Starbucks in a historic house (kind of smells).
Overall: Take into as much or little as you want, but have some patience and try some traditional sweets.

What time do stores in Ni/Sannenzaka close around? Do they close so early even when Kiyomizudera opens until late night for lightup?

Hi all, if I would like to walk down slope instead of up, so can anyone recommend whether I should start from sannenzaka or ninenzaka?
كُتب بتاريخ 3 سبتمبر 2018
You can start from Ninenzaka (also known as 2 years slope) before heading to Sannenzaka (the 3 years slope, that you've just mentioned)

Is ninenzaka and sannenzaka the place that leads to Kiyomizu dera? I intend to reach Kiyomizudera at 7.30 am and leave at 9.30 am on a weekday. Is it better to walk the 2 streets before I visit Kiyomizu dera or after that? Thanks in advance.
كُتب بتاريخ 1 يونيو 2018
Weekdays are better choice. Both roads would lead to Kiyomizu-dera. Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka are beautiful in the morning. I prefer to walk on the Ninenzaka steps though, the calm and quiet morning simply enticing and a great way to start the morning.
I suggest to start a short walk at 7:00am from Ninenzaka, you will pass by Sannenzaka on the way to Kiyomizu-dera. Once done, you can walk back to Ninenzaka, by then most shops have opened.

hello,
I have another questions, how long do you think I should spend in these two street?
Thank you very much, your advice would help my japanese trip this summer become more memorable.

Hello, I will be going to kyoto this summer and I am really confused between sannenzaka , ninnenzaka and higashiyama district (an old street that I saw many reccomendations on youtube channel about japan).
Is sannenzaka and ninnenzaka in higashiyama district? Or are they separated locations?
Thankyou very much.
كُتب بتاريخ 2 مايو 2018
Higashiyama is a district in eastern Kyoto that contains many historic temples and buildings. Sannenzaka and Ninnenzaka are two streets in particular that have been preserved specially for tourists. They are located near Kiyomizudera, in Higashiyama district.

How can I get here from Kyoto station using public transport? Or is it within walking distance? Thank you!
كُتب بتاريخ 7 نوفمبر 2016
I recommend to combine Kiyomizu-dera, south Higashiyama (Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka slopes), Gion, Pontocho, with Fushimi Inari and Sanjusangendo (the artistic highlight of Kyoto) if you have a full day, and with Sanjusangendo if you have a half day. From Kyoto station, take JR Nara Line to JR Inari to visit Fushimi Inari. Then, take Keihan Railway from its Fushimi Inari (not JR Inari) station to Shichijo(7th street) station and walk 5 min to Sanjusangengo. Then, take a taxi (@1,000 yen) to Kiyomizu-dera or the Keihan again to Kiyomizu-Gojo (5th street) station and walk @15 min to Kiyomizu-dera(temple). Walk Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka slopes, see Yasaka Pagoda, Ishibe alley, visit Kodaiji temple and its nice garden, walk through the Yasaka Shrine, and head to Gion Hanamikoji and Gion Shirakawa River areas. If you have time, head to Heian Jingu Shrine. From Gion, you can take the Keihan Railway from Gion-Shijo(4th street) station, or subway Tozai (easy-west) Line from Sanjo-Keihan or Kyoto Shiyakusho Mae (City Hall Front) stations and transfer to subway Karasuma Line at Karasuma-Oike and go back to JR Kyoto station. For the merits of each train system in Kyoto for sightseeing, read the above article carefully.

If I would like to take bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto, is there any 5 days JR pass I can purchase? I saw some 5 days JR pass but not sure if it allows me to take bullet train. Please advise. thank you!

Sorry, I cannot help you. We were for a very limited time in Japan and just bought shinkansen tickets at the train stations. We never had problem to get seats despite we always purchased "on the edge". The frequency and punctuality is excellent. For example we took the risk to travel directly from Hiroshima to Narita airport to get the returning flight to Canada on the same day and just giving a margin of couple of hours for unexpected events, and everything worked like a precision watch. You may think that shinkansen tickets are expensive but is truly value for money. Good luck in Japan
