「京の冬の旅」非公開文化財特別公開 東本願寺 宮御殿・桜下亭で、令和7年(２０２５年)１月１０日【金】〜３月１８日【火】開催されています。宮御殿の庭は御影堂に向い傾斜状に盛土され、堤防のようになっています。また手前に池もあります。この池の水も琵琶湖疏水を用いた「本願寺水道」を以前は、利用されましたが、現在は地下水を利用されています。堤防や池がある理由は、過去に御影堂は4回の火災で焼失しているからです。
いずれも御影堂からの出火ではなく、宮御殿側から延焼であり、それを防ぐためだそうです。桜下亭は昭和14年(1939年)に22世宗主 現如の霞ヶ関別邸の一部を移したもので、円山応挙の松竹梅の襖絵は岐阜別院にあったものだそうです。なかなか公開されません。写真撮影禁止ですが、この機会ぜひ訪問してください。通常参観では、御影堂と阿弥陀堂に上がってお参りできます。結局私は、約90分拝観しました。

A gorgeous huge Wooden Buddhist Temple . Not far from Kyoto station and has no admission fees. When we were there a Buddhist ceremony was taking place with musicians and chanting . It was so intriguing and interesting . No pictures and no shoes of course. . It is surrounded by homes and businesses although it is still so serene once you enter the grounds , you would never know you were in an urban area .

Located north of Kyoto Station and the eponymous tower, this huge temple of the Jodo Shinshu sect is free. Easily accessible by bus, metro or local trains.
Two main buildings are visited, one of which is believed to be the largest wooden structure in the world. Founded in 1602, the temple is designated an important cultural property of Japan. The entrance is through a huge gate (Goeido-mon) and from the courtyard you are amazed by the excessive buildings.
Entry into the buildings is once the shoes are removed and the full size and power of the people who once ordered the construction of such buildings can be measured.
Allow 45 min of visit if you take the time to stroll.

In Kyoto there are many temples and this is striking for the size of the buildings entirely of wood. Unlike others it does not have a garden to visit.

We lived nearby and came by by chance. It is free to enter and it is definitely worth a visit. That's as far as I remember Japan's largest wooden building. And it's big. It is impressive to see the large hall.
We chose to go to the Buddhist ceremony in the morning. It is done in Japanese, but it is very interesting to watch. The messing sound and very soothing, it was a great start to the day.
We did not see many tourists here, primarily locals. We can only recommend both to see the place and attend a ceremony.

This was my favorite temple in Kyoto. It is a huge wooden structure devoted to a local sect of Buddhism. In spite of being so close to Kyoto station, it was free and there were very few visitors. I guess it wasn't and Instagram site :). We were lucky to be present for a buddhist service honoring someone who had passed away - it was very interesting. It seemed so much more engaging to me as a place that was not touristy. If you are interested in the Buddhism of Japan, I highly recommend.

Walk over the moat, inside the walls, and serenity overcomes you like a soft blanket. Leaving the busy tourist-filled scenes outside, I was delighted how tranquil and peaceful this immense series of significant edifices were. It was gratifying too to see visitors showing appropriate levels of respect with obedience to clothing, footwear and photography requests. The grandeur and reverence of these temples are difficult to describe without sitting in silence and wonder.

While there are many temples in Kyoto with a lot of business, this place is free. I visited at around 10 o'clock, but it was a valuable experience because I was able to come across many disciples chanting the nenbutsu in the main hall. It is also interesting to see that QR coats can be used for offerings.

A beautiful temple complex with newly renovated buildings. We were amazed that there were hardly any visitors here. You can walk through the temple completely and take a great atmosphere with you. Beautiful wooden construction of the buildings.

As I was walking away from my office worker, I saw Higashi Honganji Temple. It is, after all, a glittering building. It is also closer to JR Kyoto Station than Nishi Honganji Temple. It is a very good Things to do.
