京都・大原の里にある天台宗の門跡寺院です。住所は京都市内ですが、かなり山深いのでバスか車で行くのが前提です。なお、バスの一日券だと大原までは行けないので、バスで行かれる場合はバス・地下鉄一日券を購入されることをお勧めします。桜の名所としても紅葉の名所としても有名な寺院ですが、三千院というと何となく雪のイメージがあったので、大雪が降った際に訪問しました。
雪の降りしきる中で訪問するのは大変でしたが、苦労しただけの価値がある景色を見られました。大雪に埋もれた三千院は静謐、という言葉が相応しかったです。全てを覆い隠すような雪と、客殿や宸殿から見える聚碧園や有清園、厚い雪を纏った宸殿や往生極楽院など、境内全体が見渡す限りモノクロームの世界で、幻想的な美しさを堪能できました。微かに雪の落ちる音以外はひっそりとしており、それがより一層美しさを引き立てているように感じました。紅葉の時期に訪問したことがあり、その際の喧騒を知っているのでなおさらかもしれません。本当に、モノクロームの庭園を眺めているだけで飽きませんでした。

建物内も庭園も、厳かながら穏やかな空気に包まれている寺院です。
休日や紅葉などの美しい季節の景色を見ることが出来る期間は、多くの参拝者・拝観者による賑わいを見せますが、通常時は参拝客は多くなく、特に閉館間際の時間帯は参道沿いのほとんどの店（茶屋や土産物店）が閉まるため一層参拝客もおらず、静謐な雰囲気が漂います。そのような中、庭園の一つである聚碧園を前に何も考えず座りながら、庭園の樹木の葉擦れの音や雨音といった自然の音だけが聞こえる、というのは、極上のひと時かもしれません。
寺院ではありますが建物内の至る所に仏像があるわけではなく、まるで名士の広々とした家屋のような印象です。常に清潔に保っており、気持ちよく寺院内を周回できるようになっています。建物そのものや庭園の撮影は許可されていますが、建物内は原則撮影禁止です。客殿から庭園を眺める広間は柱が多いため、ぶつからないように注意しましょう。また一部の引き戸の建付けが少し悪く、開閉がしづらいところにも注意が必要です。
四季折々の美しい景観を見せる庭園も、この寺院の見どころの一つです。金色堂や観音堂へは、基本的に階段を使って行く必要がありますが、スロープも設置されており、車椅子等の障碍を持つ方でも気軽に参拝できるよう整備されています。庭園を覆いつくす杉林が程よく日差しを遮っており、山中にある寺院であることも相俟って、夏でもあまり暑くありません。
従事する職員の方々の応対も非常に丁寧で、参拝客が少ない時には彼等から気さくに話しかけてくれたり等します。是非立ち寄っていただきたい寺院の一つだと思います。
Both inside the building and in the garden, the temple is surrounded by a solemn yet peaceful atmosphere.
The temple is crowded with visitors on holidays and during the beautiful season so as the autumn leaves etc., but during normal times, there are not many visitors, especially just before the closing hours when most stores and cafes along the approach (teahouses and souvenir stores) are closed, creating a tranquil atmosphere. It's a wonderful moment to sit in front of the Shuhekien Garden and listen to the sounds of nature, such as the rustling of leaves and the rain, without thinking.
Although it's a temple, there are no Buddha statues throughout the building, which gives the impression of a spacious house of a distinguished family. The temple is always kept clean, and visitors can make their way around the temple comfortably. Photography of the building itself and the garden is permitted, but as a rule, photography is prohibited inside the building. The hall overlooking the garden from the guest hall has many pillars, so be careful not to bump into them. Also, note that some of the sliding doors are not well made and are difficult to open and close.
The temple's garden, with its beautiful seasonal scenery, is one of the highlights of the temple. Konjiki-do and Kannon-do are basically accessible by stairs, but slopes have been installed so that visitors with disabilities, such as wheelchairs, can easily visit the temple. The cedar forest that covers the garden provides a good amount of shade and, coupled with the fact that the temple is located in the mountains, it's not too hot, even in the summer.
The staff members are very courteous, and when there are not many visitors, they will talk to you in a friendly manner. This is one of the temples you should definitely stop by.

コロナで人が少ない時期に伺ったので、とてもゆっくり見学出来たのですが、お香の良い匂いがして清々しくて寒いけど温かみがあって、優しい気持ちになれる凄いお寺だと思いました。
先日、辛い事があって落ち込んでた時に丁度、ご祈祷？の案内と新年のカレンダー等のお知らせをいただいたのでお線香を注文して届いたのですが、お線香の良い匂いでとても癒されています。

紅葉の時期にお邪魔しました。
遠いため京都には30回以上旅行していますが、初めてのお詣りになりました。お庭が広く綺麗に整備され、山寺の風情が抜群です。仏像も素晴らしい。

１１／２０に４年ぶりに訪問。紅葉はピークを迎えつつあるようです。本堂前はオレンジの散りモミジが見事ですが、まだまだ色づいた葉っぱも多いです。往生極楽院から先は緑のコケに杉木立がこれまた見事。緑とモミジと両方楽しめるいいタイミングでした。

The fall colors throughout the temple grounds can be quite striking. We missed the peak by about a week but were still impressed with the beauty of the place. Large amounts of tourists can be a detraction, though.

造られた観光寺院って感じを受けましたが、あまり実感に基づいて正直に口コミすると、このサイトでは「寄らば大樹の陰」みたいな内容でないと不合理な事由を振りかざして、高慢にも掲載拒否とかするので・・・本心は口コミしないでおきます。評価は実際に行って各人が評価して下さい。多分、都会のコンクリートに囲まれたような場所で寝食をしている人なら別だが、普通の日本人ならばそんなに感動するほどのものではないことは・・・・苔の庭が綺麗だった、と云うだけの場所でした。建物内撮影禁止？？何で？？？

昨年11月に京都に行きました。京都市内の観光でも左京区大原まではなかなか自分自身は行かないと思っている場所です。初めて秋に訪れ良かったと思います。

再訪です。
前回と同じ新緑の季節です。参拝者はそれほど多くありませんでした。
バス下車から参道は風情があっていいです。
大原は和みますねえ。
敷地内の縁側でずっとゆっくりしてました笑
今度は冬にでも来ようかな。

This temple is well worth a visit. We rented a car, but public transportation from Kyoto is also available. We enjoyed every minute, from the long and meandering path that takes you to the gate, to the gardens, to drinking delicious matcha while you soak up the beauty of the garden, to the tasty lunch we had in a restaurant with very simple but tasteful decor just outside the gate. Highly recommended.

Is it possible to take a cab from the Ohara bus stop to this temple?

There are taxis in the area because of tourists. It may be a case of luck as to whether there is one around when you arrive at the bus stop. It is a quiet area. I think the cabs tend to be dropping off and picking up closer to the temples in the area. We walked from the bus stop to Sanzenin-in. It was an easy, pleasant walk. When we finished at Sanzenin in we were able to get a cab, that had just dropped people off, and we used that to go to Jakkoin. That would have been a 30 minutes walk. We then walked back to the bus stop from Jakkoin. (20 min).
