This is my absolute favorite garden— mossy and quiet and beautiful. You need to reserve your ticket to go because they only allow a limit number of people at a time. Great experience all around.

This temple and Zen garden on the outskirts of Kyoto is a blissful haven of peace and serenity. Fortunately they started controlling visitor numbers here many years ago and you need to book in advance to ensure entry. On arrival you are politely asked to remain quiet and are directed to a room alongside the main temple to copy some sutras provided. An exercise in mindfulness which is very soothing. You are then free to wander around the stunning grounds and forest - the moss gardens and ponds are truly beautiful. The perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of city life and full on touring. Little wonder Bowie fell in love with Japan.

True peace and beauty. Thank you so much to hosts at the Temple who graciously permit visitors, and introduce us to the values of silence and mindfulness. As a visitor to Japan, with a week of travel behind me, this visit was the first time I could center myself, appreciate quiet, the sound of birds, a breeze on my body. The copying of the sutra was a gift, really, to slow down. The garden, about 2 acres?, demands mindfulness, too, to appreciate beauty. While the path is beautifully maintained, there are steps that some might be unsteady on. Appreciated that visitors maintained silence on our trek round...loved interplay of sunlight and plants, and deep and light greens. Plenty of gorgeous photo opportunities. I felt lighter and energized after this experience. The goshuin stamp in my nook from here nothing short than a work of art. So much thanks to the staff. Give yourself this opportunity, and don't rush!

A visit to Saihoji is easier to plan than it had been, thanks to a new online scheduling program. We were delighted to find the gardens as exquisite as we had remembered. The pen and ink for copying sutras have been replaced with brush pens and the low desks have been supplemented with tables better suited to some western visitors. We were disappointed that the monks were not in the temple when we visited. Their chants had added depth to our previous experience. Saihoji is a bit out of the way but well worth it.

A unique experince, booking is essential but a real wow memorable moment. The use of calligraphy in the temple was very calming and then I cannot really describe the visit in the moss garden, I had read this was Steve's Jobs (of Apple) favourite Japanese destination, time will tell if its our favourite destination too.

Everyone else has rated it "very good," but isn't the admission fee of 3,000 yen per person, which you apply for by postcard three months in advance, too expensive? (It's 4,000 yen per person if you book online.)
If it weren't for this, I would rate it "very good," but I don't think it's a fair price, so I just rate it "good." The garden scenery was wonderful, and it was worth coming. But religious corporations are exempt from tax, so they charge this much... I can't accept that.

Though convoluted, the application process is carefully laid out on the website. The difficulty we had was in obtaining Japanese stamps in the UK to send to the temple so that they can then send you your appointment - but we managed it. You can also apply online shortly beforehand and take pot luck, but we weren't going half way round the world to then not be able to see it!
We waited outside the gate before our appointed time with a small group of maybe 20 people, and then were let in a few minutes early while the temple staff explained the process ( in English as well!) We then went into the temple, copied out some of our Sutra ( again, a translation was offered) in a contemplative spirit. You are not expected to complete the whole thing, but it seemed an imortant part of the process, given that the garden is part of the temple, not the other way round.
A gentle rain was falling and we quietly walked round the garden. It seemed like an island of calm, whilst outside we could hear scaffolding being put up, and political cars blaring out slogans. And it really is an incredibly beautiful space, ancient and contemporary at the same time. The overwhelming backdrop of green meant that the flowering azaleas really popped out, and everything reflects in that central lake. And the moss was great too!
Cannot recommend highly enough

Le clou de toute visite à Kyoto.
Quelques recommandations pratiques,.

I've left it too late to write and request a visit to this gorgeous moss garden and temple. (I've checked the website which states that at least 3 weeks written notice is required for international visitors). I'll be in Kyoto within a week. Is there ANY way I can visit this site?
Unfortunately, there is no.
As I saw foreign tourists, please ask at Kyoto information center.
Good morning, could you show me the site through which you booked the temple visit ? From the official website it would seem necessary to send a paper request... Also I can not find email addresses. Thank you. Andrea

Hi Rahi1964,
I want to visit the garden and read about the postcard situation. How did you get your ticket? How can I get a self addressed postage if I am currently in the US?
Thank you!
Milly

Hi! The best way to secure an invitation is through your hotel concierge. Give them the day you would like to visit & they will do the request on your behalf. The temple will send the invitation postcard to the hotel. Upon check in, your concierge will give you the postcard and all the details.

Hi,
Does anyone know whether children (aged 7 & 11) are allowed to visit the temple if we apply in advance?
I did not see any children there. I only saw adults... but you can try.

How do you get permission to visit Saihoji? Can you just show up?
You need to book in advance via an written application.
I have only tried to do if from within Japan, but if you google "Saihoji Moss garden Reservation help" which offers help to do it from abroad. Hope this helps. It may seem a bit troublesome, but it is really worth the effort!

Does anyone know how long it generally takes to recieve a reply from the temple for a reservation confirmation?
I sent a request 2 weeks ago from Australia and am yet to recieve a reply. We leave on Friday.
You have to write to them and enclose a stamped self-address postcard saying when you plan to visit. In the USA there are no longer any stamped postcards to buy, so we had to have a Japanese friend to send us a stamped postcard that we sent to the gardens. It took several months for them to return the postcard and it gave the entrance date you selected. You have to arrive at a particular time they say.
