新京極から東に行ったお寺が集まったエリアの一角にあります。醒ヶ井地蔵尊という石碑が山門脇にあるように、木造の醒ヶ井地蔵尊があるそうですが、山門が閉じており一般の参拝はできないので、観光向けとは正直言えません。

ここも秀吉によって勝手に移動させられた寺院の一つです。多くの寺院を地元とは絆を断ち切らせて、強制的にここへ移動させておいて、自分は先を見る目が無かったために実質、たった一代で滅び去った秀吉、後々まで移動させた責任をとることもなく。ここは高野堂と号する浄土宗西山深草派寺院、本尊は阿弥陀如来様。洛陽４８地蔵巡り霊場の第３１番札所です。札所本尊は「醒井地蔵菩薩」。

I spent a couple of hours wandering around this beautiful 'walled city' of sub temples as well as the main feature. Sadly they wouldn't let me in to see the famed dragon roof because I wasn't with a guide...personally I don't think it would have done any harm, but it is what it is. Anyway, I really loved the grounds and the fact that I was the only foreign there and the Japanese people were very happy to see me. So nice! Myoshin-Ji is a world away from anywhere else in Kyoto. Lovely.

豊臣秀吉の天正の地割で誕生した裏寺町にある浄土宗西山深草派の寺だ。もともとは別な場所にあったが、秀吉の地割で現地に移転してきたという。平安時代に仏師・定朝が彫り、高野山に祭られていた地蔵尊（醒ヶ井地蔵）が祭られている。ここも裏寺町の例にもれず、拝観はできない。

裏寺町にあるお寺のうちの1つです。夕方ごろに訪れると柵があり、中には入れませんが少し外から中を見ることはできました。こちらのお寺も浄土宗とのことです。

裏寺町通の参拝出来ないお寺の一つです。醒ヶ井地蔵尊なるもの有るようですが、非公開なのでコメントも出来ません。写真を撮るだけです。

Myoshinji is a temple in the middle of a huge complex, which includes several temples and an entire village of Buddhist monk houses. This is a center for the Rinzai School of Zen Buddhism.
The dragon ceiling and various other temples are not always open to the public, and/or require an additional fee.
It would have been difficult to appreciate the meaning and purpose of the various temples, paintings, religious artefacts, etc., without a guide, and ours was excellent.
In fact, the most unique part of the experience was visiting a monk's house in the neighborhood. This complex includes around 300 residences for the monks (and they live pretty well). The complex is actually a village with many temples.
Although not World Heritage site, we enjoyed visiting this and gaining a unique perspective of religion in Japan.

The temple itself is a hughe and beautiful complex of smaller temples, you can see really old buildings, real monks wandering around, buy in their farmers market, even practice meditation.
It is very safe and organized, the staff is super helpful and you can find lots of help for taxis etc
There’s food and convenience shops nearby, located near very historical sites.
Love this place!!!

新京極商店街と河原町通りに間にある裏寺町通りにある寺院です。木造の醒ヶ井地蔵尊が有名で、その旨表す石碑も山門前に建っていますが、お寺は一般には非公開で、残念ながら実物を拝むことはできないようです。
