In walking distance from harbour. Very historic place but hard to imagine the real size of original whole ancient construction. Lots of explanations on site.

It was cool to walk around, have a look and take some photos. For around €3 is not a bad price for what it is.
It would have been nice for there to have been a bit more information on it all. It’s a nice thing to go have a look at while in the area.

For us Italians it is not easy to find interesting ruins, since we are too well used to us.
Those of the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus are no exception.
Very little remains of what was once one of the wonders of the world, except four ruins that give little idea of what it was like.
Fairly cheap admission (€3).
If you are nearby however it is worth visiting briefly.

Amazing to see one of the Seven Wonders of the World - while ruined, the size and location are astonishing. A brief walk or taxi ride from the town centre

Şöyle ki daha fazla şey görmeyi beklerdik, Bodrum kalesine yakın olduğu için gidilebilir ancak Bodrum kalesi kadar gittiğimize değmedi.

Entrance cost €3 - the price can be considered adequate. In general, there is almost nothing to see, but you can go for show. A good video sequence in one of the rooms

Bodrum doesn’t make the most of the fact that it is the site of one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus was a tomb built between 353 and 350 for Mausolus. It is situated a short walk from the town centre, and now consists of the remnants of the ancient stones. Most of the stones were taken by the knights of St John to fortify Bodrum Castle in the 15th century,. There is a small museum and video explaining the history of the Mausoleum. Admission 3 Euro.

It was once one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, but an earthquake toppled it long ago, and then the stones from the ruins were used to build the Crusaders' castle. Now just scattered ruins, but an important site.

Bodrum was built on Halicarnassus, one of the most famous cities of ancient times. The region has been attacked by foreign invaders for centuries. Invaders mostly landed in this region of Anatolia via the islands. The region was called Caria in ancient times. It covers the whole of Muğla Province and a part of Aydın Province on the Carian Day. Anatolia is different in various regions of ancient times as it is today. According to Old Writers, the Western Border of Caria Starts from the Menderes River. The Eastern Border is Dalaman Stream. The ancient people of the region are Karlar and Lelegler. In his Iliad, Homer mentions the Carians as the indigenous people of Anatolia and says that they defended Anatolia against the Achaeans together with the Trojans. Although there is no information about where Halicarnassos came from, according to Herodotus, who was originally from Halicarnassus and born here, and the geographer Strabo, Halicarnassus was founded by Hellenic immigrants descended from Dordan. The city, whose indigenous people were Carians and Lelegs, later became the scene of the settlements of Doric immigrants coming from Troize after the liberation of the Peloponnesus. When it first appeared, it was where the castle stood. Satrap Maussollos' Palace was also built in this place. Halicarnassus became a member of the Union of Six Doric Cities (Hexapolis) along with the Three Cities. At the beginning of the 6th century BC, Caria is in the depths of the Lydians. After Sardes, the capital of Lycia, was prepared by the Persian King Cyrus, Western Anatolian Cities Spread to the Persian Countries. Halicarnassus is one of them. In addition to the Sovereignty, the Persians brought to power the dynasties affiliated with them in the cities. The Hekatomnos Dynasty Living in Mylasa in Caria was United as Satraps. Upon the death of Hekatomnos, his son Maussolos became Satrap and immediately afterward, he moved the capital of the Carian Satrapy from Mylasa to Halicarnassus in 367 BC. Halicarnassus is a place that is easy to defend and suitable for trade and navigation. It developed rapidly. Satrap Maussollos Forced the People of Six of the Eight Lelegian Cities Around to Settle in Halicarnassus. Maussollos Reconstructed the City by Bringing the Famous Sculptors and Architects of His Period to Halicarnassus. During this period, the Mausoleum, which was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the Halicarnassus Theater, one of the Earliest Theaters in Anatolia, and the Walls began to be built during this period. Maussollos ruled Caria for 24 years, but when he died in 353 BC, his wife Artesemia II took his place and his rule lasted two years. At the beginning of 334 BC, Alexander the Great captured the city at the beginning of his Eastern Campaign. Later, it continued as a small city in the Asian Province of Rome. The city was the target of the attack of the Pirate Verres in 80 BC. In 60 BC, it appeared as a poor city. The city was the scene of public works during the reign of Emperor Augustus. The Mars Temple of the Ancient Theater was Built in This Period. In the 4th Century AD, while the Roman Provinces were producing crops again, Caria Became a Separate Province, and after the Official Acceptance of Christianity, Halicarnassus became a Bishopric and was made the Metropolitanate of Aphrodisias. The city fell into the hands of the Turks in the last quarter of the 11th century AD. During the First Crusade (1096-1099), it became dominant in the Byzantine Region again, and in the 13th century AD, the Naval Veterans under the command of Menteşe Bey captured Halicarnassus again and a castle construction can be seen here. In 1402, when Yıldırım Bayezit was defeated by Aksak Timur in the Battle of Ankara, the Anatolian Union Disbanded, and here the Saint Knights asked Mehmet Çelebi for a place to build a castle on a piece of land belonging to the Ottomans on the Anatolian coast instead of the destroyed castles in Izmir. The Knights of Saint Jean captured Mesy's Halicarnassus and began to establish their castles on the Doric Acropolis, where the Turkish Castle is located. In 1770, the Russian Navy set fire to Bodrum. During the Greek Rebellion in 1824, Bodrum was used as a base by the Turks. During World War I, on May 26, 1915, the French Battleship Dupleix attempted to evacuate soldiers by bombarding Bodrum, but withdrew after Bodrums resisted, causing many casualties. Bodrum was occupied by the Italians on May 11, 1919. Italians Used the Castle as Headquarters and Tried to Get Along with the People. When the War of Independence initiated by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in Anatolia progressed in favor of the Turks, the Italians left Bodrum and the Muğla surroundings to end the occupation on July 5, 1921. Existing from the City of Halicarnassus; Ancient Theatre, City Walls and Myndos Gate, Mausselleion, Necropolis (Cemetery) Areas with Ongoing Excavations, Roman Villa, Mars Temple, Bodrum Castle are the main ruins.
