It was a very interesting experience to watch the yumomi performance at the Netsunoyu building next to Kusatsu yubatake. We saw women in traditional costumes using large wooden paddles to stir the thermal water. It was meant to lower the temperature of the hot springs, without the need to add cold water. The performers were doing the show, together with songs and dances. It was a worthwhile experience in Kusatsu, which was supposed to be ranking number one in terms of hot spring ranking.

Frankly, it's the result of an image strategy.
I lined up from around 9am on the first day of the three-day holiday for the 9:30am performance and managed to get a seat in the second row in the center of the first floor. When the show started, the second floor was filled and there were standing room only.
I watched the show full of anticipation, but there were only two performances: a few minutes of quick, quick massages of the water, and then the last minute of frantic stirring. It was so short that it was understandable that the next performance was 30 minutes later...
That said, the Kusatsu Onsen Festival is famous, and the draining of the water is also famous, and this is the only place you can see it, so it's no wonder that customers flock there, but as others in the comment section have said, it's a place that's only valuable as a travel story.
By the way, according to the guide, the performance from noon on the day before the holiday was also packed.

Tickets for the Yumomi Show, which is held six times a day, go on sale 30 minutes before each performance, so if you want to be in the front row, you'll need to be prepared to line up. It's entertainment unique to Kusatsu, so it makes a great memory.

I went because it was listed in the guidebook. The actual Yumomi show was about 15 minutes long, during which there was an audio guide introducing the history and a performance by the host who teased the audience. It was a bench seat, so it was hard to take photos if you were in the back row.
The Onsen Rakugo performance started at 8pm. You can get a 100 yen discount on tickets if you book online. The doors open at 7:30pm, so everyone seems to be there 10 minutes before, so if you want a seat in front, head there 30 minutes before. The Rakugo performance was Jugemu, and there was a comedy skit by a comedian in between. If you are staying at an inn far from the Yubatake, be careful because taxis are available until 10pm.

The show is interesting: they cool the thermal water while singing a traditional song. They do it with the movement of some wood. I think seeing it from the first floor is better, you see the whole panorama. There is a presentation that says it in Japanese... it could have a translation to understand better.

Came here with our tour group and at first i was wondering why we had to see this but i quickly changed my mind. This show was impressive. The effort that these ladies put into their show is awesome and i'm glad that we stopped here to see it.

中、小学校の子供連れて行きましたが、とても満足していました。大人にはちょっとつまらないかもしれませんが、子供にはお湯をかき混ぜる動作、後半の激しくお湯が舞う湯もみは高評価でした。

源泉が９０度以上になる草津温泉ならではの「湯もみ」ショーが見られます。水を混ぜて温度を下げることを良しとしなかった草津の方々が作った伝統です。
時間は約２０分で入場料は一人６００円ほどでした。女性６人が湯をかき混ぜる大きな棒で湯もみをするのですが、歌も踊りも含めて、それほど凄いパフォーマンスではなかったです。しかし有名なパフォーマンスなので草津に来たなら一度見学されてはと思います。

草津温泉の湯畑横にある湯もみショーを見ることができる場所です。湯もみに関係ないトークが多く、ショーもこんなものかと言う感じでした。
草津温泉に初めて来た際には行ってみると良いとは思いますが、正直2回目はないスポットだと思いました。

I don't think I've ever attended an event that was so short and so over rated in my 30 years of travel. I love this little town, the onsens are magic, the town worthy of a wander. But this event is horrific. A commercial video of the town starts it off for a few minutes, then a woman talks more than a desperate politician for 10 minutes without taking a breath. By the time she's done the audience looks like they need a tequila shot to wake up. Then you have 4 women join her in two songs while the have essentially a 1 minute water fight. Honestly, wow, it's more exciting to walk through the 7eleven across the street.
