In the desolate riverside, where rocks roll, you can feel the dynamics of Mother Nature, smelling sulfur in the area, hot springs gushing everywhere and steam rising. The hot spring fields are good, but I also recommend them.
There is a promenade in the park, but it was wet from the rain so it was almost slippery.

【Comments】You can walk well from Yubata through the spa town.
Footbaths are located at the entrance and back of the park. Both were moderately warm and pleasant.
In the back, there is also a hot spring waterfall and an open-air bath (for a fee) where you can fully enjoy the autumn colors.
Further down the road, there is a place called "High Temperature Forbidden," but the water in the river that runs through was cold.

I dropped by Sainokawara Onsen again after almost ten years. The place is BUSY ! I went in the afternoon and can hardly find space in the changing room. I think the schoolies were celebrating or something. The train from Ueno was also full. Book early if you are coming in March. When I booked, there were 3 seats left in the entire train and I booked 3-4 days early!
The Onsen is still the same except for the fence that they have built along the path so that one can not see the men bathing. The sharp pebbles along the bottom of the pool were gone. They say Fridays are mixed onsen, I have'nt tried that yet, maybe next time.

From the Yubatake, the symbol of Kusatsu Onsen, heading west along Sainokawara Street for about 10 minutes, we arrived at the entrance to Sainokawara Park.
This park stretches several hundred meters from east to west and is home to hot springs gushing out from the source, with footbaths scattered here and there and a river with hot spring water flowing through it. If you dip your feet in the river, it's actually a natural footbath.
The road from the Yubatake is lined with souvenir shops and restaurants, and you can really get a feel for the hot springs, so be sure to head to Sainokawara Park.

源泉が湧き出ている池が何か所もあり、普段では見ることの出来ない珍しい景色です。折角この公園まで来たのなら、露天風呂に行くべきだと思いますが、寒さで服の着脱等が面倒になり諦めました。

一番近い天狗山第一駐車場に車を停めて雪道を７～８分ほど下って西の河原公園にある露天風呂に行きました。とても快適でした。露天風呂を出た後に公園を見下ろしましたが良い眺望でした。ちなみにＰＨ２の強酸温泉の川中に緑の藻を見ることができます。珍しい藻なので是非チェック頂ければと思います。

至る所から温泉が湧き出ているようで、大小の流れがあり、足湯も点在。硫黄の匂いに包まれ草木や微小生動物を寄せつけないのは天国か地獄か。何にしても草津ならではの光景だと思います。

Easy walk, pleasant atmosphere. Worth a visit. Quite different to see the pools and river steaming away, enjoy a break from the tourism assault in town.

「草津、良いとこ一度はおいで、、、どっこいしょ、、、」の歌で有名な草津温泉に行き、この河原公園に行き、露天風呂で入浴した。足湯でほっかりしながらカラ松に囲まれた青空は素敵でした。温度もちょうど良くて、衝動的に足を入れ、その後はハンカチで拭った。

Are you able to wear a swimsuit for the public onsen? As it's a public free onsen, I'm also guessing that it is mixed gender?

It’s mixed gender Friday nights. Typically swimsuits are not allowed; I do not know about the Friday night mixed gender, however.
