‪If you love trekking and want an authentic experience of ethnic diversity in Myanmar then visiting the villages in the hills of Kengtung should definitely feature on your itinerary.
The key to this is no doubt the guide and we were in excellent hands with the person who led us on our trail. He was able to help us engage with the people we met without us feeling like we were intruding on village life. We drank tea, tried on traditional costumes, laughed together and bought many bracelets and beads from the local people, who were always welcoming and genuine in their response to us.
We came away feeling truly grateful for the opportunity to spend time with, and learn from these amazing people.‬

‪If you like to visit Hill tribe villages, the Kengtung area is the best place to visit in Myanmar, as the surrounding hills are home to the biggest variety of different ethnic tribes in Myanmar, while tourism is still quite low key. Several (sub)tribes of Akha, Lahu, Eng, Ann, Shan and Palaung can be found in a relatively small area. They have moved to this relatively safe area from the area where they were originally living because of ongoing ethnic conflicts. Other hill tribe (trekking) areas such as Loikaw and Chin state offer less variation and popular trekking areas such as Kalaw and Hsipaw offer no traditional hill tribes at all.

You can reach Kengtung in three hours by road from Taichileik at the Thai border (2 hours from Chianti’s Rai). The road from Taungghi is only accessible with a permit, which is a difficult, lengthy process to obtain and not recommended, so from within Myanmar its best to fly from/to Yangon, Heho (near Inle Lake) or Mandalay.

Most of the villages are still relatively unspoiled, but do not expect them to be completely untouched by tourism. Some villages have kept their traditional houses, others have developed more and have (partly) changed the traditional style to a more modern (brick or concrete) home. The same applies for the traditional costumes. There are villages in the area (further away from Kengtung) which are still completely off the grid, untouched and authentic, but at the time of writing it was not possible to visit them, as there is civil unrest in the area. The best time for trekking is supposed to be the end of September, beginning of October, because dry season has started but the rice paddies are still green. We liked November / December as it is not too hot. Note that you are not allowed to drive a motorbike yourself. In theory, you could arrange a motorbike taxi to most of the villages if you do not like trekking, but the “roads” are bad and a you would miss part of the experience without a guide introducing you to shy local people and translating for you, so I would recommend hiring a guide with car and driver.

We arranged a guide, last minute, the evening before our first daytrip. Our hotel (Amazing Kengtung Resort) called Francis, who came to our hotel and we arranged everything with him directly (I assume all hotels will be able to call a decent guide. We also tried to arrange a guide through the Princess hotel, but communication was very difficult and they charged more than dealing with the guide directly). Francis explained us the different options we have (more or less 5 different trips, mostly full day trip, but some can be done in half a day, see the trekking map I uploaded).

The first day we did the Pin Tauk trek, where we started our day with a visit to the local market to buy water, lunch and gifts. After that we visited 5 different villages. It is supposed to be the most touristy trek, but apart from some women selling handicraft (without too much pushing to buy it) it felt rather authentic and we did not see a single tourist all day. If you only have one day, do this trek. It only involves several short treks, not too difficult. Frances is an experienced, reliable, knowledgeable guide, who knows the local people and speaks the local languages. We were invited in several homes to drink tea, take pictures and interact with the locals. It was sometimes difficult to understand his explanation if it involved more complex matters, but his English is good enough for most interactions. He tries to minimize the negative impact of tourist visiting by teaching the locals not to ask for gifts or take it for granted.

The second day we visited the Lahu Shi village. It is sold as a strenuous three hour walk, but we did it in 1.45 hrs uphill on a small road. With the relatively cool air, walking in the shade for a large part of the trek, I found it only moderately difficult. We were accompanied by another guide, Sái, a young part time guide, who was also very good (Frances was not available). He speaks English very well. The Lahu Shi village is the most poor and basic village we visited but it is very beautiful. The Lahu Shi dress is basic as well and not as refined as the other tribes and they people are shy. We also visited a Wa village, where we could see some original mud houses and a Palaung Village with women with traditional clothing. These villages are bit more modern and therefor less visited. Children were running away because there were scared of two big white men visiting their village.

A good half day trip is the one to Wan Sai. It involves more driving and little trekking and includes a visit to the Akhe (with pipe smoking women) and a Buddhist monastery.

Count on 75-80USD for a full day trip, 55USD for half a day, including the car/driver.

Last, but not least: if you visit the villages, some gifts are appreciated, which brings in my opinion a dilemma as children start associating tourist with cookies. Our guide explained that the cookie giving is also because otherwise the kids are scared and run away, so giving a cookie invites for interaction. As the cookies are wrapped in plastic, and plastic waste is all over the place - becoming a problem - we saw two different approaches: Giving the cookie including the plastic with the guide learning them to dispose of it responsibly, the second option is to unwrap it yourself, give the cookie and take the plastic with you. I preferred the latter, as there is no waste system anyway... as for the gifts for the adults, your guide will be able to tell you what they need (shampoo, medicines, detergent etc). Try to bring something sustainable, limit plastic waste and do not bring clothing as it will ruin their culture.

Hope this helps planning your trip. Enjoy!

‪Hello everybody, I visited Myanmar and KengTung last September. I would like to strongly recommend Tao as guide there (09459154947 is his phone number, but you can even find him on facebook, search for Keng Tong Trip) . He comes from the Wa ethnic group. He can speak very good english, he is super kind and will do everything to let you know as more as possible about the tribe culture around the area. We even had the opportunity to spend a full day with him and his family at his home, to cook a local lunch with him and deeply understand plenty of interesting things about their culture.
Enjoy Myanmar and KengTung, it is still unspoiled if compared with others South East Asia destinations, really worth a visit!‬

‪A short TripAdvisor review can never do justice to the experience I had with my guide Francis when visiting the hill tribes around Kyaingtong by motorbike and on foot (up to a total of a few hours of hiking per day) three weeks ago. I am fairly well travelled, having visited about 60 countries and seen and experienced many extraordinary places in the course of the past 30+ years. And the hill tribe visits went straight to my top 5 most memorable travel experiences ever. They certainly were the highlight of my 16-day trip to Myanmar.

Francis and I visited nine different tribes in the course of three days, the furthest of them a relatively remote Lahu Shi tribe. I did not see any other tourists in any of the villages. We also had memorable encounters with various other tribe members (including Loi women) in our morning visits to the Kyaingtong market.

If you want a guide that can interact with all the tribes in multiple languages and dialects (lahu, akha, shan), go with Francis. He is reliable and punctual, speaks good English, and listens to your preferences but also has his own suggestions. Most importantly, he has a good relationship (or can form one) with the tribe members due to his own background. Francis can be reached at sai.francis2012@gmail.com.‬

‪We booked a 1 day trek through Harry's trekking and adventure and we met our tour guide, Shaan, who was a good friend of the late Harry. Shaan, speaks 6 different languages and can speak English very well. He has established a close relationship with the tribes in the mountains through the many years he has been visiting them with tourists, which is what made our experience extra special. He asked without any pressurising whatsoever whether we wanted to buy sweets and balloons for the village children, we agreed to and it was one of the most beautiful things to see the smiles on the children's faces when we gave them the little treats. The Ann village tribe welcomed us into their homes and fed us their traditional meals, showed us their traditional outfits and were happy to talk to us, via our guide Shaan who was translating. Throughout the day we visited 4 villages and Shaan took us to the most amazing view points, we also went to a rice whisky manufacturing site and the hot springs. Along the way we stopped over at the rice fields and Shaan explained to us in detail the whole process. Me and my wife feel lucky to have booked our trekking with Shaan, the value for money is incredible. It was the best trekking experience ever! You can contact him directly or ask your accommodation to call him, his number: +95 9 253 595 672‬
