If you want to have a feel of traditional Portuguese architecture I India, Fontainhas is the right place. My niece has special interest in architecture. She only advised to visit the place. We see here a number of colourful houses beautifully lined up in the locality. The best part is the cleanliness of the entire area.

The Fountainhas is off the busy main road. Its takes about 30 minutes to walk around this pleasant area.
Don’t make a special trip to it but call by if you’re passing.

Fontainhas or Bairro das Fontainhas is an old Latin Quarter in Panjim. It maintains its Portuguese influence, particularly through its architecture, narrow, picturesque winding streets like those found in many European cities, old villas and buildings with projecting balconies painted in the traditional tones of pale yellow, green, or blue, and roofs made of red coloured tiles. Fontainhas’ heritage ambience represents the traditional Portuguese influence in the area. Walking through this neighbourhood reveals all of these features that should be complimented with some local, delicious Goan fare and the ubiquitous Caju Feni...

Avoid, avoid, avoid! Whatever charm there is in the place is destroyed by over tourism and the insta-generation wanting the unique shot. Once you get over the shock of seeing so many “no photography” sign peppering the place, you’ll be met with hostile residents - especially if you’re “indian”. There’s very much this “we’re not indian” feeling about the place with the residents who should probably have left with the Portuguese anyway :).
We got yelled at for no better reason than walking the streets (no photography or intrusion of privacy), and as such I would avoid this place at all costs. The roads are not private property and really no one should object to one walking on a public road, but there you go!

The place is just for people who want to click or get clicked for social media mostly. The issue is its just 2-3 lanes of Portuguese style houses and obviously they are private properties where they don't allow photography. Still people manage to sneak and click pictures.

Beautiful architecture to explore along with cure cafes and nice restaurants. Lots of goan food, and also art shops/boutiques to browse. It's a well preserved heritage corner in Goa and can be a nice place to wind down for food or drinks along with some shopping.

Being a Goan myself, my friends and I were excited to visit this place but when we went there it was never the same. I understand and respect that they do not like people taking pictures but why do people from out of India are allowed to take pictures and not us. Why the difference? it happened right in front of us. All in all it was not a wonderful experience. But do respect the people and specifically the Church there and do not disrespect the place.

Tourists are NOT SO WELCOME HERE NOW. I believe that one of the very lesser known facts and tourists need to be educated about is that most of this area has PRIVATELY OWNED PROPERTIES AND HOUSES along with few cafés and restaurants. Hence, it is obvious and completely understandable that the locals are fatigued and agitated by the large volumes of crowd that pours this area during peak tourism times / weekends / holidays. Moreover, most of the area is mentioned as “NO PHOTOGRAPHY” zones but is confusing to understand what is okay and what’s not okay when it comes to photography. Thus, you may face a rage and shouts from the locals when you overstep the borders.
Locals have somehow developed an idea and an understanding that tourists are more interested in peeping into their daily private lives than being genuinely fond of the beauty of this place and just trying to capture few loving memories back home with them.
The place is beautiful but I am forced to rate it as “Terrible” due to the recent experience from locals and I would encourage people to skip visiting this place until it is brought back in order with clear guidelines by the local officials and people and until it becomes tourist-friendly again!

Not immediate vicinity. You will have to walk if you really want to explore the place and its neighbourhood. We did not face much problem as we used a cab.
