‪Visited here after the poignant Jallianwala Bagh Memorial Gardens. Neither reflect particularly well on the British colonial rule of that time, which seems to have had an insensitivity to the Indian people and a lack of knowledge of the potential implications of the boundaries they were creating. Mostly interpretation boards with some video and other visual exhibits. Lots of high school pupils who seemed genuinely interested in learning about the recent history of their country. Hard to imagine the equivalent British pupils expressing quite so keen an interest 🤔.
The partition scenario was, I thought, well represented by the art installation towards the end of the exhibition that showed a saw carving a straight line through a brick wall.
Worth a visit.‬

‪This was a beautiful and emotional experience, learning about the history of the Partition and hearing the stories of those directly affected. It was beautiful seeing the clothing and reading the stories of how people started over. Would definitely recommend if you are visiting India to add this is in as part of your trip.‬

‪As soon as we arrived in Amristar, our guide brought us to the Partition Museum. It was excellent in explaining everything about the partition of India - something we knew very little about beforehand. The exhibits were well explained in English so we didn't get the audio guide. I would highly recommend this museum.‬

‪The museum is walking distance from the Golden Temple. Entry fee is Rs 10. Photography is not allowed. The museum shows pictures, maps, hoardings, newspaper coverage, pamphlets, artifact's, currency, articles during the partition. There are videos of people who have seen the partition describing what they have faced. English, Hindi and Punjabi are the languages which describe how the partition took place.‬

‪I had the opportunity to visit the Partition Museum in Amritsar, conveniently located near other attractions like Jallianwala Bagh and the Golden Temple. This museum is a poignant reminder of India's history, and every Indian must visit and spend 2-3 hours here to truly understand the events that shaped our nation in the early 1900s. It's an immersive experience that brings to life the stories of resilience and courage from that era.‬

‪I found the partition museum mind blowing. It was not yet here in my previous 2 visits to Amritsar. I have almost never written TripAdvisor reviews and rarely other online fora.

The violence and insanity of partition had a direct impact on my family. I was born in the US and have had ongoing inquiry about partition and British colonization and its impacts. I came in curious and receptive from this background context.

Humiliation, hope, anger, grief, faith, sadness, courage, empathy and a sense humanity all moved through me as I walked through the museum. I actually wasn’t prepared for the museum to be as well conceived, curated, presented, and executed as it is. As one begins to encounter this unfolding series of events (it isn’t really just one thing), one begins to realize how vast, broad, deep and complex a realm it actually is.

The curation includes:
—A fantastic blend of concrete factual narrative, availability of primary verbal newspaper and letter sources, visual imagery/ photos, first person subjective accounts through extensive interviews, and art work in various forms (poetry, song, visual, etc.). Often a sense of the culture’s unfolding alongside, in parallel with, and in response to events is almost palpable.

—Small scale human level to broad scale global politics and religious levels. In other words, the more abstract “top down” way history is often meaningfully capture, and that which addresses limitations of such an approach as well—the bottom up way it impacts individual human lives.

—How it all was situated historically in the context of dehumanizing and pillaging British colonization.

—Threads of major political figures like Gandhi, Jinnah, Nehru, Mountbatten, and Radcliffe included to a certain degree that may spark real insight and empathy into their experience.

Meanwhile quite simple as well.

Tells the tale from many angles as something as complex as a migration of 18 MM people and 2 MM others perhaps dead.

I feel there are so many specific impressions which really struck me. Like for example how deeply rooted Gandhi’s strength and moral courage was in his faith. I had read his autobiography and already “knew” that but it became all the more clear. That serves as a simple illustration of many impressions.

I went thinking 1.5-2 hours would be sufficient. I left thinking I could easily appreciate a month of daily visits. That is probably an outlier of an experience but for those interested, I hope this review offers something that helps you feel whether this is supportive of the type of time you would like to have while in Amritsar. 🙏🏽‬

‪We are here this week and the museum was a very welcome surprise - it’s very cheap for entry (INR10 per person), nicely laid out, well explained and was reasonably crowded so it was good to see it doing so well. It’s got good narration of the partition stories from tv documentaries, films and live exhibits from those times along with music and anthems playing in the background. Very moving and really leaves an impact which stays with you throughout the trip. A must do when in Amritsar!‬

‪Very moving and engaging museum. The audio guide is not necessary (the museum itself is very informative) but nice if you prefer to absorb information through audio, and it's fairly manageable to both listen to the audio guide and read/look at the exhibits themselves.

I took 2 hours, moving through at a decent pace and had to rush through the last 2 rooms (but I am the sort of person who likes to read every plaque, though I didn't listen to any of the videos). You could do it in 1 hour if you were pressed for time and less into intensive museum experiences than I am, or 3 hours if you actually wanted to watch a lot of the videos (which seem very interesting).‬

‪This is an excellent and educational museum right outside of the Golden Temple- if you visit there, you can’t miss it. There are lots of places to eat, and a little mini train for kids, as well as the museum. The museum itself is family- friendly, there is of course a lot there that is disturbing due to the history, but the museum is carefully arranged so that parents can monitor young children’s intake if they choose. Really important topic and a beautiful and conscientious display of personal stories and history. If you’re planning to visit Wagah border, definitely go here first. 1-2 hours will see you through the museum with the optional audio guide (100 rupees to rent). Cost is r10 for locals and r250 for foreign visitors.‬

‪I was born around partition time - 1947 the year in which two cultures divided; families were torn apart; Hindu Muslim riots left over a million dead; women in thousands jumped into wells to die, rather than fall into hands of rioters; trains left Lahore to reach Amritsar or Attari border with no one alive but full of corpses oozing blood! It was a time of millions trudging from Pakistan to India and vice versa, often encountering violence on the way. It was a massive Railway and bus transport migration. Families lost their loved ones, homes, jewellery, children & became refugees. Migration stories are full of soul wrenching images and memories and few still alive, remember that era with sadness at losing friends in all communities, now separated by hatred and religious intolerance. The Musuem is well laid out, with small ticket - ₹ 250/- $3 per foreign tourist. It’s worth to know this history of two nations that emerged raw from colonial rule and British raj in 1947 August 14-15th. Situated in middle of bazaars and restaurants it’s a good experience and deserves a coffee in Starbucks right next door!‬
