A great diving school with skilled Instructors

I selected Island Divers to do my PADI open water because they were the only company that didn’t tell me that it’s a 2 day course. PADI open water is NOT a 2 day course. You shouldn’t listen to anyone who tells you it is. The theory takes 12 hours alone including exam (assuming you actually read the material).
So, the good and bad.
The good: The team were very patient for the most part. I got sick right after the first beach session and they tolerated me postponing the training dives a couple of times while I waited to get a bit better. My instructor was also very patient and quite thorough during the beach sessions where we learned the exercises. We had 2 of these sessions because our tanks ran dry after only finishing half the exercises. The dive boat was well equipped and the shop itself was well equipped. Everyone was friendly.
The bad: The main issue was, I just chose the wrong instructor. She was good during the beach sessions, but during the training dives where you go out to get open water experience, she made no attempt to train me. She went into assessment mode and failed me on the first of 4 dives. These dives aren’t there purely for assessment, they’re there to give the student experience and to provide a space for practice and training. On dive 1 she said she was going to fail me because I wasn’t showing awareness of my surroundings – I was getting too close to her and wasn’t keeping an eye on my depth. I think I convinced her to just let me practice these things, but perhaps I was imagining that. In any case, dive 3 she got me to do the CESA, which I hadn’t practiced and failed in 5 seconds. I tried a second time and made the same mistake. That happened at the beginning of the 3rd dive and after that she stopped all other exercises and gave up on me. She wasn’t watching the time of that dive either and ended it after 18 minutes. PADI training dives need to be 20 minutes in length to count. I did the CESA correctly from a shallower depth on dive 4 but she had already given up on me from dive 3 and didn’t want me to attempt it again from the correct depth. Her behaviour as a trainer during the open water dives really wasn’t professional.
Here are some other things where she went wrong.
1. When I started the theory, she gave me the book and a piece of paper to write the quiz answers which I would hand back to her for marking. But she wasn’t aware that the course and exam were all online now and I ended up redoing all the quizzes. Wasted 1.5 hours.
2. When she first gave me the book, she said, “You need to do section 1 and then we can go to the beach”. Then it was, “you need to finish sections 1 to 3, then we can go to the beach”. Then it was, “You need to finish all 5 sections, then we can go to the beach”. Then it was, “You have to finish the exam, then we can go to the beach”. And then even after the exam was done, “Have you completed the RDP? You need to finish it before we go to the beach.” – which wasn’t true. At no point did she apologise for the sequence of wrong advice – she just made out as though it was clear all along.
3. PADI requires that students read the manual of their dive computer before going out with it. I didn’t get the dive computer until right before the first open water dive. I didn’t get access to it the day before to learn it, nor did I get the manual or its model number. My instructor didn’t know how to use it when she gave it to me (she had to get assistance from her colleague). She told me that the ascent rate indicator was on the left side and that I’d see it when I started ascending. But when I was out there, I couldn’t see it. I still couldn’t see it on dive 2. I brought this up and before dive 3 we discovered that the ascent rate indicator was on the right side, not the left. She’s probably thinking, well, you should have seen it anyway, but even during dive 3 where I did the CESA (the ascent rate indicator is critical for this exercise), I still hadn’t found it. So, I attempted the CESA without knowing my ascent rate. Dangerous. It wasn’t until dive 4 that I discovered that I had to hold the dive computer perfectly parallel to my face. When tilted away slightly the ascent rate indicator was hidden under the edge of the computer mount on the right side of its screen.
So, overall, I would say that the experience was bad despite some good aspects of this company. I am considering reporting my instructor to PADI given she put me in a really difficult and fairly dangerous position by providing wrong advice and by not giving me access to the dive computer and its manual prior to the dive.

I had Andrew as an instructor for the two weeks I was on Koh phi phi Island. We started with a refresh which was done very professsionaly by Andrew. Then we had few fun dives and finally I decided to do the Advanced course. Everything was well explained, he knows how to put his customers confortable and safe. I really enjoyed diving with him. If you speak French as me, don't hesitate to go with him!

best of all diveshops in Koh PhiPhi, 20 years ago this becam my favorite diveshop and it still is. Nowhere else you fins such a warm, personalized expert dive service.

Thanks to all staff for helping us to restore our skills and get back under water after a 12 month break. It was a great review session, and taking place at sea, and not in a pool allowed us to enjoy the experience as well. As advanced divers of an advanced age we received consideration and support in getting back into the swing of things.

Dived with Gustav at Island Divers for a refresher & fundive. He was 110% client focused and made sure my dive was safe and enjoyable. Knowledgable, assertive, professional and playful, This outfit is a good choice for certified divers or anyone wanting to give it a try in a truely beautiful location.

Unique experience and 100% recommended. All the instructors are wonderful and there are also several who speak Spanish, especially Gustavo, Elena and Leia, who are 10. Also Marta, the photographer, who thanks to her we don't only carry memories in our memories.
Without a doubt we would repeat with them again!
