If you like being on a crowded boat with little to no air-conditioning and no window for fresh air, this is the one for you. We were told it was a fast craft but my dads punt with a 5hp outboat fighting an incoming tide on Westernport bay goes faster. The view was pleasant, and the crew offered a water on arrival. If you're after a novel way to travel instead of a road trip, it's okay.

The journey was about two hours fifteen minutes in each direction when we went.
It’s very stable on the river. Becomes a little more bouncy once it reaches the sea for the last 20-30 minutes but no problem the day we went.
Ferry is clean, has clean toilets and once the ferry has left port you are allowed on deck which gives a nice view of the river and passing scenery and other boats.
I am a foreigner and my credit card was not accepted by the online booking system so I had to book online and then pay at the ticket office at the ferry terminal in HCMC. Booking online 3 days in advance gives something like a 25% discount.

Don't be surprised if the ferry company cancels your scheduled departure.
When arriving the ferry dockside for the last ferry departure, 2 pm, the staff informed that cancellation was because there were no passengers. So I had to find a hotel in Saigon to wait for 9 am. departure the next day.
Advise is not to book in Vung Tau before confirmation of departure or you end up like me with 2 hotel rooms in one night 😉
The seats on the ferry are quite hard. There is a small kiosk on board selling water, beer, and assorted types of snacks.
The crew are nice, smiling, and attentive. Give seasick bags to the ones getting seasick.
The departure is usually delayed, but the trip is very beautiful on the river.
Toilets in the rear of the ferry and its possible to stand outside on the back of the boat during sailing. Just be careful not to fall into the water.
The last stretch from the river and to Vung Tau can have rather choppy waves. People getting seasick is common. Keep your eyes on the horizon, and you will be OK😉
Arriving in VT is easy. Old and rusty pier, but staff looking after you. Restaurants are close, and the stairs or cable cars to Love-mountain are also close. Watch out for taxi scam. FUTA TAXI have many taxi waiting and will drive the long way to your destination. And they will cheat you on your change. Do not accept it! Have a nice stay in VT.

Five stars for the ferry ride - quick and smooth ride, quite enjoyable and an easy trip. Getting on/off the ferry in HCMC was fine. But I take two stars off for the very difficult process for exiting and boarding the ferry in Vung Tau. I watched the ferry passengers struggle to get up the steep set of stairs to the floating dock and down the steep ramp to the exit area. Old people struggled, as did people with large suitcases or multiple pieces of luggage. Families with small children too. Climbing steps with luggage is accompanied by lurches of the floating dock every time the ferry bounced against it. Very unsafe. I managed to board the ferry by gripping the rail, but the ferry terminal needs to do something about this process.

As other reviews have noted, this is proper travel...you get on this both for the trip and the destination.
Don't get a seat in row A or seats 4, 5 or 6 unless you want only to have a view of a flat screen playing American Ninja Warrior and a version of You've Been Framed, called Just for the Gag, gag being precisely what it will make you want to do. Still, better than pop videos, I suppose.
Very busy at weekends and Vietnamese travellers tend to close all the curtains, curtailing the outside view to zero.
You aren't allowed on the deck at the back at the beginning and end of the trip, which is a pity, as there would be so much to see. But they have be able to tie the boat to something.
On arrival into HCM from Vung Tao you are confronted with an extremely busy road and no taxi rank. When I arrived, there was also a busy food market being held in the green space outside the Quay which meant you couldn't get to the road either.
Take your luggage, your sense of humour and your life in your hands, get to the road and then cross it.
You should be able to hail a taxi from outside the Majestic opposite reasonably quickly.

While the creaky charm of the old hydrofoil ferries is now gone and missed, the new boats are modern, clean and dependable. I believe this is the best way to arrive into Vung Tau. No worries about traffic jams in and around HCMC and some interesting sights to see along the way. Favorite part is about a half hour into the trip you can go outside on the open back deck. It's windy, noisy and exposed to the sun so it's good for a time to check out the Mekong Delta land and riverscapes. I also cannot say enough about the customer service of the company via email and in person at the dock and on the ship. I wanted to secure our seats as we pretty much had only one boat that would fit our tight schedule and was surprised how quickly and clearly they were able to get back to me and ensure our seats.

Had to fill in time so took the Hydrofoil from Ho Chi Minh down to Vung Tau, 2 hours from Ho Chi Minh to Vung Tau. 45 minutes in Vung Tau and 2 hours going back. Cool inside and the Hydrofoil was about 1/2 full gave plenty of seating options.
Pretty smooth ride once inside the Delta itself.
Would recommend the trip for something to do.

The ticket office is in district one, at the pier where you board the Fast Ferry, they have a coffee stop that serves good food as well, it’s a great trip down river to Vung Tau, and a Vung Tau is excellent.
Just ask taxi to take you there, they all know where it is.
I booked tickets online. Do I need to print out the tickets or can I just show the screen on my phone?

Just show the booking on your phone and the staff will print tickets, no issue, and very straight forward. Very nice staff, I did this at both ends of the journey.

I bought a ticket on green line and I can’t make the 2 pm ferry , how do I change it for a later time
John C

Depends on the ticket, prices vary, you can buy a one changeable ticket or a changeable one, I think you could do it online, but the ticket is completely in Vietnamese. I would suggest referring to hotel staff to see if they can help, if you are in Vietnam that is. Or but a new ticket, that’s what I did because I made an error, it’s pretty cheap travel

Is it always bad once you leave the Saïgon river and hit the open sea? I caught the ferry on Saturday to VT and it was lovely till we got to the sea. Awful part of the journey and not sure I want to use it to return to HCMC next week.

I found the entire trip enjoyable, when we hit open sea it was just fine. I don’t know why your concerned about the open sea I didn’t know we were in it until I went outside it’s easy and fun ride there and back to Saigon.

Hi Kylien,
I don't think so but you can go to their website browse
greenlines dp fast ferry and scroll to their page, not the ferry booking company that comes up first
There you can book online.
I've just looked and booking page is in Vietnamese.
Good luck and enjoy your trip
Regards Ali
Is alcohol sold on the boat? Is there any hot food sold?

Beer only, no food, although they hand out a pice of sponge cake and water!
Hi,
I was wondering if you are able to carry on big luggage. I want to go straight to Vung Tau once i arrived at the airport but I don't know if there's room for my luggages.

Hi there. In regards to the bigger ferries, with seats in the 4-4 config, can anyone advise which rows are best aligned with the windows for most uninterrupted view; ie, so that your view is not bisected by a pillar?
Also, is there space to stand (or sit) in the open air at the back of the boat? Is this allowed?
Thanks for any info.
