‪I have always loved train journeys. There is something very literary about them. It's easy to be transported to a forgotten time of travel and history. This train journey takes it to another level.

We had purchased our second class reserved tickets a few months before from an online provider. It was waiting at our hotel on our arrival in Sri Lanka. I am confident that we could have purchased a third-class ticket or even a second class ticket on the day. We were travelling on a Tuesday morning, and seats were free within the second and first class.

Don't buy a first-class ticket. In first-class, you can't open the windows, and that is half the joy. Lots of tourists who had bought first-class tickets were moving into second class so that they could ride the train looking out of the windows and stand in the open doors.

The scenery is breathtaking, and what's more, the train guard made sure he always gave plenty of warning when the next waterfall or view was coming up. I have read a lot about sides of the train being better to sit on but to be honest; there are great views on both sides at different times.

The journey from Kandy to Ella is over five hours, and sometimes the train just stops, but the journey itself is the experience.

Definitely one of the best things we did in Sri Lanka.‬

‪I absolutely LOVED taking the trains around Sri Lanka. But this particular leg of the tracks was the best!

My first time on the train I had a first class reserved seat. Very posh. A/C, reclining chairs, electric plugs, etc.

My second trip, both first and second were sold out so I had 3rd class reserved seating. After that, I purposely took 3rd class on each trip! If you take reserved, you will have a seat -- you won't have to worry about standing or feeling crowded. Most of the time, you actually sit in your assigned seat. But even if not, you will have a set.

I'm not sure the difference between 2nd and 3rd reserved, they looked very similar to me.

In either class, the windows are open and you can really enjoy the scenery -- small towns in Sri Lanka, fields, farmers, valleys, mountains, bridges, tunnels. It's all so magical. If you're really feeling adventurous, you can sit in the doorways for parts of the journey and really feel a part of the countryside rushing by.

No matter where you buy your seat, I HIGHLY recommend taking the train for this journey. It's stunning! And an amazing value for the price of your ticket!! Enjoy!‬

‪Het is een 8 uur durende rit en daarom hebben we een gedeelte gedaan om een indruk te krijgen van deze reis. Absoluut de moeite waard om hiervoor te staan dringen op het perron.‬

‪Known as one of the most scenic Train routes in the world, the Kandy - Ella train ride surely is worth an experience. We boarded the train from Nuwara eliya and it took 3 hours to reach ella. You have an option to. Select either first class or second class tickets. Getting tickets is the first challenge here as there are yours who buy all available tickets and then sell it for 10 times the cost. However your driver or guides would know how to manage one. We opted for second class tickets paying 10$ for one. The second challenge is to get a seat which the tout should help you with. Once you are through with this challenges, the experience piece takes over and you hardly feel disappointed. The view on the entire route are really great and you are often lost in switching sides. The doors and windows are occupied at all times with people trying to click photos in various instagram poses much to the entertainment of other tourists. The coaches are small and toilets are basic. Not much if an issue for 3 hours ride. The stations are very small but very scenic and you can easily get down to click some really good clicks. There are a lot of vendors who sale basic food stuff in the train. All in all a must have experience during your visit to Sri Lanka.‬

‪Our tuk tuk driver Kishore, and an excellent guide, picked us up from the Homestay timely, to get to the station at 0850, we bought the tickets and no grief there, my tells me that they were about 40p each in UK price, what a bargain, the train was die at 0820 but arrived a little early, we managed to get a seat, but couldn't find anywhere for our heavy backpacks, sat with them next to us, not an issue, the train didnt move for another 1hr remained in situ until then, eventually it was on the go, brilliant because, the view waamazing when I eventually got an opportunity for an un interrupted shot, other than the normal traveling backpackers, u do get the odd obnoxious (not locals) group, who is only aware their own presence no one else matters. Anyways the train journey is amazing, the views are stunning, the third class seats, I can see no issues with, the trains stopped at few stops then carried on, it was packed with traveling backpackers, count the locals would be the correct thing to say.
Definitely not forgetting my selfie stick and go pro next time :)‬

‪We risked buying tickets on the day at the Kandy ticket office. Good choice, no queues, painless & cheap. Everybody offering to get us tickets in Kandy wanted about 10 times the price for a £2 fair. We went 2nd class in a group of 5.
Biggest challenge is space. We stood for the first 2.5 hours. Some stood for 7. Once you actually get a seat the trip becomes an experience.
There’s a constant “buzz”in the carriage & everybody is jostling for position, then you have to move every 5 minutes to allow a man to come down the carriage with a huge basket selling something. Up & down, up & down constantly.
At every station a few get off & more seen to get on, welcome to the Kandy - Ella train.
Yes views are great.
Yes it’s an experience.
Yes its as authentic as it gets.
Is it for everyone....No
Would I do it again...No
Am I glad I did it.....Yes

Can’t work out why the carriages all face backwards, you can’t see things coming until it’s too late & you miss the photo.

It’s almost comical watching 3 ticket inspectors trying to move down the train to check & punch everybody’s ticket.
Keep yours handy.

There’s also huge congestion at Ella station when everybody seems to get off & funnel though a ting gap where more inspectors collect everyone’s ticket.....bizarre.

‪We took the train from Kandy to Ella, seven hours which is a long time on a train. Yes views are spectacular of tea plantations, waterfalls, deep gorges but unless you are a train enthusiast think about picking the train up further down the line. We went 1st Class (2nd full) which has more comfy seats and air con. You can half open the windows for photos but also you can move to other carriages where there are no windows or closed outer doors to take photos. The loo is very very basic. Vendors come along selling peanuts, sandwiches, samosas, drink etc. ‬

‪Fantastic views! Writing a review to point out the downsides of first class- the windows don’t open and are a bit dirty so not great for photos. It can be cold. Also hawkers at stations can’t sell through the windows and this is a long way! People were jostling to stand by the open door for photos. I’d go for 2nd class. Our train was stopped at Nona Oya due to an earlier train being de railed. We had to pay for a car for the rest of the journey. This was just bad luck though. ‬

‪This is a once in your life must do experience. The scenery through the mountains as the Train winds itself trough the tea plantations is simply mesmerising. Yes it’s a long 4hour rickety train trip but you won’t regret it. There is a 1st class that has aircon but be bought 2nd class reserved seats so we could hang out the windows and the whole family too turns sitting in the open doors (there are lower class/cheaper tickets available). Make sure you Take your own snacks and water but there are food/drink sellers that wanted the train. ‬
