We travelled by car & picked the places we wanted to visit and we were able to actually visit most places fairly quickly. Noticed that there are cycles to hire as well.
Truly loved our time at Gal Viharaya which was our favourite, there is a local app called Balamu which is effectively a guided tour that can be downloaded on your phone and will give you brief details of each place you visit based on location , this which was fantastic.

An absolutely unmissable site to visit with all the calm you need but also with preparation before the visit otherwise you would risk getting bored walking in the ruins.

Visit the ruins of Polonnaruwa. You will definitely hire a tuk-tuk for the visit. Bicycle rental available but be aware of the heat. Distances are miles. There are stalls selling water and soft drinks. And vendors who are gonna try to get you to buy something from them. The quadrangle and Gal Vihara you can't miss. The purchase ticket in the museum. I recommend you make the visit first (about 3 hours) and at the end see the museum, so you do not get caught in the heat of noon.

We visited the entire site with a French Guide booked by our Guide.
Very interesting visit of this very important archaeological site of Sri Lanka.
Very impressive Buddha carved from a huge stone. Very beautiful remains. We learn a lot about the time of countless kings.

Polonnaruwa is an absolute gem for history enthusiasts and anyone fascinated by ancient civilizations. As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it offers a remarkable journey back to the 10th and 11th centuries when this city was the thriving capital of Sri Lanka.
The ruins here are incredibly well-preserved, allowing visitors to truly imagine the grandeur of the ancient kingdom. The intricately carved statues, stupas, and temples scattered across the site are breathtaking. Highlights include the Gal Vihara, with its stunning Buddha statues carved out of solid rock, and the Royal Palace, which gives a sense of the architectural splendor of the time.
What I found particularly captivating was the sense of tranquility that envelops the entire area. Despite being a popular tourist destination, Polonnaruwa never feels overcrowded, allowing you to explore the ruins at your own pace. Cycling around the site is a popular option and adds a bit of adventure to the experience.
Make sure to visit the Archaeological Museum before heading out to the ruins. It provides valuable context and enriches your understanding of the site.
Overall, Polonnaruwa is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Sri Lanka. It offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and natural beauty, making it an unforgettable experience. Don’t forget to carry water, a hat, and sunscreen, as the sun can be quite intense, especially during the midday hours.

We stopped off on our way between Sigiriya and Passakudah and spent a few hours exploring this historical place. This is a ‘do not miss’ experience. The ruins of this huge ancient city provide a fascinating insight into the sophisticated skills and technology of the Sri Lankan people hundreds of years ago. The palace, sacred places of worship and huge carved images of the Lord Buddha are incredible but all around there are also the ruins of many ordinary houses and shops.
The ruins cover a vast area. Many people hire bikes and pedal their way around which looked like hard work in the heat. Instead our driver drove us from site to site and we also hired a guide ($40) when we arrived at the ticket office to tell us all about the history which really added to the experience.
There are many hawkers trying to sell souvenirs, drinks etc. They’re a bit annoying but I guess are just trying to make a living so just be patient.

Interesting archaeological area, composed of several sites (fortress, palace, various temples, ponds, etc.) that integrated the city that bore that name. It is advisable not to do it exclusively on foot, because the places to visit are sometimes relatively far from each other, and the heat can be very overwhelming. We did it by car, but there were tuk tuks everywhere to make the tour easier. It is worth it, especially the temple of the three Buddhas, which has spectacular sculptures.

the royal city itself is beautiful and you must have seen it, but be careful if you take a guide. we had a guide with tuktuk from the park he asked 60 euros for 3 hours to show the city when he was done for 1.5 hours and I gave him half he got angry and threatened. So be careful who you take especially when the entrance fee is 35 dollars per person.

It's very special to see it, but if you have to pay a $60 for a Guide in addition to the entrance fee, I find it really bizarre

The site itself is very large, and full of some incredibly interesting history, and impressive sculptural edifices. However, the entrance fee is somewhat steep (US$30), and the guides don’t - in our experience - add anything whatsoever to things.
Ok, so taking a guide is optional but we hoped that, being novices in Sri Lankan history, we might get a lot from one. So, when one jumped on us as soon as we pulled into the car park, we agreed on a price to pay if we appreciated what he had to tell us, and another if not. Sadly, we quickly realised that he had simply memorised what is detailed on the metal plaques at the entrance to each site, and couldn’t answer any of our questions, preferring to repeat what he had just said. That undoubtedly clouded our overall appreciation of the visit, and we would have been better relying on a good guide book.
We’d definitely recommend hiring bikes to get around the site - it’s very straightforward to do, and they can be hired for around US$3-5 per person.
Overall, a fascinating site to discover, if done in the right way.

Does anyone know how much time it takes to take the bus from Polonnaruwa to Valaichchenai? By train I read it's a bit less than 2 hours, but from the centre of Polonnaruwa you'll need a tuc tuc to get to the train station, so maybe the bus is more convenient/faster in total because the bus stop is located in the centre. thanks in advance

I have a car booked for my Sri Lanka trip. However my travel agent informs me that the driver/guide we are getting for the trip is not allowed to drive within Polonnaruwa, thus we will need to hire tuk tuk to move around. Does anyone here has any experience hiring a tuk tuk? Biking is not an option as most of my party members are elderly who cant cycle.

PS: We saw other cars and even mini-buses in the park, but no tuk-tuks!

Hi there,
Many people recommend visiting the museum first before the ruins. As we are staying the two nights in Polonnaruwa I was thinking about visiting the museum in the evening and then going to the ruins early the following morning. Is this possible without paying the $25 entry twice?
Thanks,
Tiri

The entrance fee is paid at the Museum entrance, so their ticket counter serves the whole area. Usually the tickets are dated, and then stamped on the various points of interest, so I am not really sure if they can provide you with next day tickets during late afternoon. The best strategy is to go early in the morning, and have the whole day in front of you for the ruins, usually it is enough.
Try contacting them or your local operator, but do crosscheck, because local information very often tends to be erroneous.

Hi, Im going to SL in a few weeks and plan to visit Polonnaruwa. Can you remember which company or where you rented your bikes and did you book your guide in advance or when you got there? Can you recommend a company?
Thank you
