This is one of the stops for Polonnaruwa historical sight tour and the pictures of this place defines the ancient town of Polonnaruwa, making it the most touristic place from the sights that you can see at the ancient town. The place consists of one main building ruin that you can freely walk through.

This is the vaulted type (gedige) image house built by king Parakramabahu the Great (1153‐1186 AD) and it is the largest image house built in ancient Sri Lanka.

Impressive from every angle. The huge statue is the centrepiece, but don't forget to explore the outer walls too.

Another breathtaking structure built by King Parakramabahu I with massive standing Buddha statue more than 14 meter height. Murals can be seen at the structure and there were some scaffolding for restoration works. Worth to check out this masterpiece from the ancient world for 30-45mins. There are few massive stupas in the vicinity of this site that worth to check it out too.

Shame for us but a good thing in general, at the time we were there it was under renovation, you could still go inside and view the building

These ruins I found more interesting, the shapes and sizes of them were quite incredible. We walked round the area outside them, plenty of shade!

The name of this image house translates to ‘the ornament of Lanka’. It is 55’/16m high. It is another structure built by Parakramabahu I. Only the torso of the formerly 41’/13m standing Buddha has survived. The reddish orange colour of the bricks catches your eye. Its interior reminds you a bit of a Western European cathedral.

Tento chrám připomíná zdálky křesťanské kostely - jak celkovým vzhledem ale i svislými okny, leč uvnitř je socha Buddhy. Zajímavá je i vnější výzdoba.
