‪Come tourist season,  a teasing nip in the air and a bouquet of fine scents to warm the olfactory, what better way would there be to usher in the new year?! I headed for Old Delhi, to Chandni Chowk's legendary 207 years-old traditional heritage perfumery Gulabsingh Johrimal for an afternoon of traditional Indian, Arabian as well as French-style fragrance oils.

I was warmly welcomed by the Gundhi family with refreshing masala chai to beat the Delhi chil. Then came a fine selection of authentic Gulf-Arabian attars that began my memorable afternoon. Sahara Oud, a deep, dark, mysterious attar took me back to the dunes, Bedouins and rugged desert scapes of the Middle East and North Africa with its rich labdanum, musk, woody and oud notes. I found Sahara Oud to be the perfect fragrance for a winter evening out with friends or family with its cozy warmth and deep, musky tonality.  For lighter, fresh and bright Arabian notes, I purchased Exotic Oud, a clean, woody, fresh , young white oud blend and Royal Oud Cedar, a delightful crossover fragrance with French and Arabian nuances of citrus, cedar, musk and a charming accord of oud.

For my mother, I decided to go in for some classic floral attars. Shahi Ratrani was my first choice. It was a masterful take on India's legendary 'Ratrani' or night blooming jasmine with citrus elements to embellish the floral notes, a universally appealing formulation indeed. Exotic Harshingar charmed me instantly reminding me of the classy 90's Nina Ricci  perfumes my mother wore back when I was a teenager. It's deep, rich floral notes were soothing and sophisticated as they can be.

Lotus is synonymous with Indian culture and Exotic Lotus was a gentle, feminine interpretation of the ancient flower, a must try for the ladies of all ages. Exotic Lotus is truly an all-season scent and spells subtle class. The performance of all these scents in terms of projection and longevity on skin or on fabric,  turned out to be incredible. Despite being delicate floral compositions, they last between 6 to 8 hours each.

Being a huge fan of musk, I purchased Exotic Kasturi at first instance. This was an enigmatic, soft white musk that left me mesmerized. An unmistakable take on the authentic Arabian musks the Arab aristocracy would cherish and layer their exotic scent collections with, Exotic Kasturi is my new favorite scent for the new year!
I personally would recommend spending a good two hours at Gulabsingh Johrimal for a wholesome nosing of these exquisite and fascinating scents. At extremely reasonable prices, this iconic perfumery  offers superior quality products that reflect two centuries of expertise, versatility, passion and undying dedication.‬

‪India pioneer the art and science of incense making millenia ago. While southern India, namely Mysuru in Karnataka is synonymous with agarbatti incense sticks and dhoop incense cones and sticks, today, these are a universal Indian phenomenon.

Integral to various cultures and faiths, agarbattis and dhoops find place in nearly all Indian households. In northern India, the 200-plus years-old Gulabsingh Johrimal heritage perfumery boasts of a fabulous collection of superior quality incense varieties. Apart from their famous attar oils, their garbattis, dhoops, benzoin 'Loban' and other incense varieties for overwhelmingly affordable prices is a must try.

My first agarbatti was Frankincense. Sacred to almost all faiths, frankincense is usually the forte of the Omanis. India too has its own variety of frankincense and this agarbatti bore the quintessential warm, aromatic, citrus, resinous, woody charming aromas of frankincense.

Myrrh was next. Rugged, woody, resinous as well, this agarbatti fragrances my living room and almost, every corner of my apartment with exceptional longevity. The secret ingredient in Gulabsingh Johrimal's agarbattis is the Triple-A grade benzoin which privides a sublime base to all varieties of agarbattis, even their soothing florals.

Speaking of which, their Kewra agarbatti is perfect solace. The deeply calming scent of this indigenous Indian flower permeating the air creates the perfectly prayerful vibe.

Agarwood, a tribute to the legendary Oud is a unique agarbatti. With distinct accords of ginger and sandalwood, the subtle woodiness pervades as this robust incense spreads its captivating aromas.

Loban, a take on benzoin is among the best traditional incenses in my collection. A little different from the typical benzoin dhoops and resin available in the market, this one is woody, earthy, sweet, the ideal choice for festivals, or even early in the morning as I do, to gently spread a rejuvinating vibe around the house.

Gulabsingh Johrimal's bambooless agarbatti sticks too caught my nose - Night Queen ( night blooming jasmine or Raat ki Raani), Musk and Amber, each bearing an old world charm and a sillage of true blue Indian tradition. I would also highly recommend this perfumery's larger sandalwood cones  for an experience of authentic Mysuru sandalwood. These cones last really long and the packet contains a cute heart-shaped holder too!

Among other highly recommended incenses are their floral agarbattis-Jasmine, Rose, Oriental, Opsugandh, along with Ood, White Ood and the rich and exhilarating floral bouquet Sugandh Sagar, an all-time favorite of Gulabsingh Johrimal's ardent customers. ‬

‪A piece of heritage in the middle of India's bustling national capital is truly heartwarming ! Situated on the Chandni Chowk main road in the heart of the thriving, centuries-old bazaar, the cozy perfumery draws international fragrance aficionados for its versatile selection of attar oils and incense varieties.

An impressive array of aromatic oils was laid out before me as I sat excited, ready to unleash my olfactive passion. The first to charm my senses was a stunning summery White Musk Smoky. A fabulous composition playing with pink pepper, white musk and tobacco leaf, I was transported to the marinas of Monte Carlo lined with millionaire yachts in the deep blue Mediterranean froth.

Next, Arabian Musk. The distinct, sharp muskiness of a typical Arabesque blend penetrated a smooth, leathery tonality as hints of aged Indian oud teased my senses. This was a classy , understated crossover fragrance that combines nuances of traditional Arabian perfumery and the refinement of the French.

Losing track of time, I soon realized it was evening and nearing sunset. But, fragrance truly transports you beyond time and space! So I decided to go with another leisurely hour of fragrance tasting as dabs of attar were generously placed on the back of my hand, and finally, all along my forearm! I literally smelt like a bouquet from heaven all along my air journey back to Mumbai !

Natural Cologne was 'natural nostalgia' ! Bringing back memoirs of western Europe, the simplistic patchouli and jasmine tango took my back in time! For floral solace, a heady, scintillating Alishan charmed my senses with a fresh citrus opening and a play of flowers settling over a musk and sandalwood base. To compliment it was Benazir, a marriage of Damascus rose, kewda, and other Indian flowers that transported me to India's ancient temples of pilgrimage and tranquil Sufi mausoleums.

For a taste of the Arab World, Fitrat was the first - an all out gourmand offering with a creamy saffron accompanied by a subtle rose and a white musk base. Ood Gold, a gentler, floral take on oud preceded 1001 Nights, a floral, musky, woody masterpiece with a clean, sparkling aldehydes as an essential ingredient. Mumtaz, Arabian Nights, a polished, ambery-floral Oud Saffron and a delicious Oud Nawabi, all sprang up nuances of Indian oud during their unfolding.

Gulabsingh Johrimal, I feel, is a must for all aficionados of exotic scents and for all visitors to Delhi. It will indeed be a deeply fulfilling and wholesome olfactory experience for visitors of all ages, nationalities and backgrounds, for after all, scents are the soul's best friends!‬
