Shantivana is one of several memorials to national leaders of India, all spread out across a vast contiguous expanse. The most well-known of these is Rajghat, the memorial to Mahatma Gandhi. But his contemporary, fellow Congressman and freedom fighter, and India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, has a somewhat lesser-known memorial in the vicinity. This is Shantivana, where Nehru was cremated after his death in 1964.
My husband, I, and our daughter visited here in late spring-early summer, when it was already quite hot. That, combined with the fact that we visited on a weekday, meant that we pretty much had the place to ourselves: we only saw a few other people, of whom at least half were local gardeners. The space is beautifully landscaped, with groves of trees shading pathways that meander around, stretching far and into the adjoining space of Vir Bhumi (the memorial to Rajiv Gandhi). We didn’t go very far, because it was hot and our daughter began complaining of mosquitoes and insects, but what we saw, we liked a lot. Flowering trees—palash (flame of the forest), Moulmein rosewood, red bottle brush and silver oak among them—were all around, and here and there are scattered boulders that lend the space an even more natural look. A short way in from the entrance, there’s also a lovely artificial lake, on which were ducks and some geese. We saw plenty of other birds in the trees too.
Whether you’re here to revere a national leader or not, do come here to enjoy nature. Shantivana exudes an air of quiet greenery, not the manicured and carefully trimmed lawns of Nehru’s other memorial (at Teen Murti Bhawan), but a much more charming, close-to-nature space.
No entry fee is charged. I would suggest visiting in spring, when the flowering trees make it very beautiful indeed. Wear clothing that covers your limbs, because there are mosquitoes around thanks to all the vegetation.

Located at Rajghat, New Delhi, it is the place where India's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was cremated. It is known as the "Forest of Peace" and its lush greens, sprawling gardens, numerous trees and saplings keep the atmosphere cool and serene, making it the perfect haunt to unwind. It seems like heaven to be in such a calm and quiet place in the maddening city of Delhi. One can plan to visit alone or as a couple to spend some quality time here.

Had taken the kids to see this place as we were doing the touristy rounds of Delhi. The place was super neat and clean and well maintained. It was also quite a peaceful feeling to be here.

This is a park built around the place where mortal remains of Nehru has been buried, close to Raj Ghat. This is essentially a park with nice greenery, well maintained. Can be clubbed with the visit to Raj Ghat.

Another burial site, nothing extraordinary. The surrounding parks and lake is well maintained though, otherwise can be skipped.

Memorial dedicated to Jawahar Lal Nehru who was the first prime minister of India. The wholw area is covered with greens and looks like a mini forest. A small lake nearby adds beauty and charm to this place.
