Did a tour here, and it was fun. This historic Victorian theatre was the centre of cultural entertainment for the elite in the British Raj days.
Great to see it restored and still producing plays.
Short tour of around 20
Minutes going up on stage and up to the balcony as well as hearing about the history of this fine theatre.
The enthusiasm and friendliness of the staff is palpable. Only shame is we couldn’t have attended the interesting looking production tonight

Designed by Henry Irwin and inaugurated in 1887, the Gaiety Theatre (or Gaiety Heritage Cultural Complex, as it is now known as) was the focal point of Shimla’s cultural life during the days of the British Raj, with productions by leading theatre troupes being staged here. Later still, this theatre (which, even back then, spread across several buildings, including one which housed the police department) played host to famous personalities of the Indian theatre and film industry, such as Prithviraj Kapoor and KL Saigal.
The Heritage Cultural Complex was recently renovated and restored, and today hosts various cultural performances, ranging from theatre to magic shows. Besides the theatre, the building houses other spaces that are used for other cultural activities. We could not fit a performance into our itinerary, but we saw an interesting exhibition on the conservation of indigenous Himachali architecture.

Was fascinating to see the before and after by looking at the old photos from when it was gutted and just a shell to how it looks now after all the restoration efforts. The guide there is really good and gave us a great insight into the history and also the fabric of the place, including how the scroll design panels contribute to great acoustics.
Too much of the tour focused on the huge photo collection of past performers and plays - most of whom I had no idea who they were, and the same plays seemed to be done over and over so that part could have been cut to a much shorter time.
Overall an interesting 45mins or so. The ticket cost 50 rupees including camera use.

Historic building located on the mall, very close to scandal point. A part of this building is being used as a police station, art and culture room. When I visited there was a painting exhibition and an artist was doing caricature. The other part of the building is the Gaiety theatre. Still in use, it's an amazing experience. There is a small entry ticket to see this part. Gaiety theatre building is one of the main landmarks of Shimla and has a lot of heritage attached to it

Fascinating insight into British India; it's like a small provincial theatre in the UK. Beautifully restored too. We were shown around by a man who had great knowledge and cared passionately about the place. It's a little expensive to visit, but I assume it costs a lot to keep it going.

Nostalgic of British era when this club was founded for holding dramas and operas and it has become a cultural complex over the years. The AMD inside, open to members only serves delicious meals in good environment.

After lunch we visited this still operating theatre. It has a history dating back to the raj and maharajas. It is a small and charming example of exclusive gatherings. A brief visit worthwhile.

The art gallery and exhibition was worth the visit... the theatre has a old world charm. The renovated building has the preserved a lot of history
