‪Templo no demasiado grande para lis templos de Indio y no policromado, pero es muy bonito, todo con un fino esculpido precioso. Merece la pena‬

‪An architectural masterpiece of a Temple dedicated to Lord Chennakesava (meaning “handsome Keshava”), is located on the banks of River Cauvery at Somanathapura, near Mysore. Being nominated for the UNESCO World Heritage tag, recently, the site is a big draw among tourists.‬

‪Beautifully preserved temple complex set in a lovely garden. Getting there is part of the experience - an hour's drive from Mysore, the road winds through lush fields and pleasant rural scenes. Single lane road, but in good condition. Temple complex maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. Very few people visiting on the day we were there - barely 10-15 persons in the entire complex. Parking is Rs. 30. Temple entry tickets need to be purchased online by scanning a QR code at the entrance. The security guard is very helpful and will guide you step by step. You'll need a smartphone and some digital payment account in order to get tickets - no paper/counter ticket is possible. Lovely lawns lead up to the temple complex. Not a functioning temple, but footwear not permitted inside. Plan for 30 minutes to explore the temple on your own. The entire complex is beautifully preserved, and the carvings are gorgeous. Signage at the entrance provides history and context in English, Hindi and Kannada. Couple of guides were available and offered their services (we didn't engage them, but other visitors did). There's a toilet available at the back of the temple compound - clean, but watch out for the 10-15 monkeys that are around there. A hidden gem, and a must-visit in my view, if you are in the vicinity of Mysore.‬

‪I wonder this temple is not known in mainstream blogs for places around Bangalore. A 13th century temple with beautiful carvings. Unfortunately with multiple instances of brazen lootings, many ancient carvings and idols now stand mutilated but still its very good and I must highlight the commendable job ASI is doing. Please get a guide, as they explain to you in great details all the beauty which this temple has it around it (Cost of the guide is 300Rs.). Entry is through buying tickets from ASI portal, so either buy it in advance or use Paytm. Somehow Google pay and other options didn't seem to work.‬

‪Location is on the outskirts of Mysore city about 38 km and it takes almost one hour to reach this location. The road to this location is good and normally there is no traffic during the day. There are beautiful farm landscapes on the way to this temple. OLA CABS or UBER CABS will be a safer and cheaper option. Go for hourly rental plan.

We had to pay a nominal fee online for the visit which is about INR 40/- per adult.
I am not sure of charges for Foreign Tourists.

The art work was appealing and it seems to have been carved from big chunks of rocks assembled together. The temple has idol of Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva in the inner sanctum. There are many idols along the outer walls and I failed to recognize many of them. The idols on exterior of the temple wall have not weathered off. I wish I had read a few Hindu scripts or at least managed to pay for the Guide. I didn't bother to hire a guide as I felt it was not necessary. Sometimes its just ok to be watching the art rather than to dive into the details.

There is a toilet within the temple complex wherein you can refresh yourself.

A few vendors sell coconut water outside the temple area which can be equally refreshing and safe to drink.

Overall trip time could be between 3-4 hours. This place is good for people who wish to see something different and be relaxed.‬

‪We continued our journey to Somanathapura from Talakadu which is about 40 minutes or 25 KM . I had to pass T-Narsipura bridge and don't forget to enjoy Cauvery river flowing and roads are well laid till destination. You have to pay Rs30\- for parking and Rs 20\- for temple entrance.

Temple is spread across huge green grass lawn and definitely its a mood up swinger remember to carry your DSLR to capture the place and luckily no camera charges here. Get inside the temple premises and its best to take a guide for detailed explanation of temple. Enjoy the beautiful sculpture and get inside the sanctum . Unfortunately idol is not worshipped here as temple is said to be attacked by invaders and its considered inauspicious for worship . Best time to visit temple is after 3 so you can save your feet from sun burns and remember temple closes by 5:30 .

There are no good restaurants near the site except few refreshment centers so better pack your own food.‬
