Sounds a lot better than it is. Very little legroom, skinny seats. Departing very late.
We were on the steam locomotive trip and the locomotive spewed soot/ash onto our car and into our compartment. It was on everything and in my hair. Some of the ash was very hot and singed my skin.
Did I mention that you should wear hearing protection? 103 db whistle blowing all the time.
I suggest looking at the locomotives and calling it good. I had hoped for better photo opportunities but it didn’t happen.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the DHR or the Toy Train, is a 2 ft (610 mm) gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in the Indian state of West Bengal. Built between 1879 and 1881, it is about 88 km (55 mi) long. It climbs from about 100 m (328 ft) above sea level at New Jalpaiguri to about 2,200 m (7,218 ft) at Darjeeling, using six zig zags and five loops to gain altitude. Six diesel locomotives handle most of the scheduled service, with daily tourist trains from Darjeeling to Ghum – India’s highest railway station – and the steam-hauled Red Panda service from Darjeeling to Kurseong. Steam-enthusiast specials are hauled by vintage British-built B-Class steam locomotives. The railway’s headquarters are at Kurseong.
On 2 December 1999, UNESCO declared the DHR a World Heritage Site. Two more railway lines were later added, and the site became known as one of the mountain railways of India.
How to Reach:
By Air
Bagdogra, 90 K.M. (via NH 110) away from Darjeeling, is the nearest airport connected by flights from major cities like Kolkata, Delhi and Guwahati.
By Train
Apart from Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Station (88 K.M. from New Jalpaiguri Railway Station) the two closest railway stations are Siliguri and New Jalpaiguri. These railway stations have direct railway connections with Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati, and other major cities of India.
By Road
The major access to Darjeeling by road is via Siliguri, 77 K.M. (via NH 55), which is connected to all the major cities of India. Bus service is available from Tenzing Norgay Bus Stand, Siliguri. Smaller vehicles are also available on seat-sharing/ hire from airport, railway station, motor syndicates / police motor stand. Facility of Pre-paid taxi stand from NJP Railway station & Bagdogra airport can also be availed. The four routes that one can opt from Siliguri to reach Darjeeling are: Tindharia – Kurseong route Dudhiya – Mirik route Rohini route Pankhabari
This route provides breath-taking panoramic views of the Himalayas and the nearby hills. A few number of stops are special and unique in their own way. The journey starts from New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri. Sukna provides a look to the wildlife in the region. The Agony point and the Batasia Loop are one of the most important and popular stops. The train stops at the Batasia Loop for 10 minutes for the passengers to enjoy the view and visit the Gorkha War Memorial which displays the selfless service of the Gorkhas in the British Raj. It halts at Ghum for another 30 minutes for a visit to the DHR Railway Museum.
Siliguri, at the base of the Himalayas, was connected with Calcutta by a metre gauge railway in 1878. Between Siliguri and Darjeeling, Tonga services ran on a cart road – the present-day Hill Cart Road. Franklin Prestage, an agent of the Eastern Bengal Railway, approached the government with a proposal to lay a steam tramway from Siliguri to Darjeeling. Ashley Eden, lieutenant governor of Bengal, formed a committee to assess the project's feasibility. The proposal was accepted in 1879 after a positive report by the committee, and construction began that year.
Gillanders, Arbuthnot and Company was hired to construct the line, and by March 1880 track was laid as far as Tindharia, and Lord Lytton, the first viceroy to visit Darjeeling, rode to Tindharia on the train. The stretch from Siliguri to Kurseong opened on 23 August 1880, and from Siliguri to Darjeeling on 4 July 1881. The company's name was changed to Darjeeling Himalayan Railway Company.

The train is heritage for sure, but the ride is certainly not upto the mark. The train passes thru the same route as the cars and there is nothing much to see between Ghoom and Darjeeling, the most common route of the train ride. The price of RS 3k does not justify the views which are available in a car ride too.

This toy train ride has been more of a nostalgia. It really feels excitement when the engine blows it’s horn and moves slowly across the contour of the hill. The stops at Batasia Loop provide an awesome picturesque location. While being at Ghoom means clicking photos at the highest railway station in India. Highly recommend experience for everyone at least once.

Overrated. It’s not an experience one can enjoy, it’s not scenic at all takes you through the city to Darjeeling. We booked the heritage steam one out of 2 hours of journey it is noise polluted for 1 hour 45 minutes. It’s good to take photos at station but not worth the ride plus it’s very expensive for the experience

Riding a toy train from njp to darjeeling was quite unpleasant and not recommended at all. First of all there is no washroom in the first class coach for this 8 hour journey. It stops at one station Tindhara where you will get a washroom facility at the station.
There is no proper food arrangement. Other than Tindhara, in no other station any food stalls are there. Tindhara has a small food stall which has a limited number of momo & it depends on your luck whether you will get it or not.
The train does not follow any schedule for stopage & you will basically get 2 proper stops for 10 mins (one at Tindhara & other at Kurseong). It's difficult to manage food, especially if you are traveling with family.
The seating arrangement is congested with no proper place to keep your luggage. First two seats were dumped with luggage, but that was possible coz the train was not full.
Overall its a pathetic service from IRCTC. What is the reason for the 1400 rs ticket against which you are providing a terrible service. At least provide a 30 mins stop somewhere for a proper food & washroom facility.
It's a waste of time & not recommended at all.

Do not carry any luggage. Absolutely no space for for suitcases! Unless you purchase a seat for it. There are no toilets on the train, only at the station. Seats are not comfortable for long rides but since it’s short it’s OK. Yes two seats on each side. Bring ear plugs if you have young kids.
When we ride into the jungle safari is there is any threats to wildlife?
the toy train gives a halt in lkurseong station but can i ask for just a 1 minute halt if it passes from infront of our hotel ?

I was ready to buy two tickets for the Toy Train (First Class, Steam) but it offers me four different seating (berth?) options: Upper, Lower, Cabin and Coupe. What are the differences? Which one would you recommend?

I plan to be 1st May in Darjeeling. What time of the day would be better to take the Joy Ride DJ to DJRZ (Steam), 9:15, 11:30 or 13:50?

9:15 ride would be perfect. As it allows you to view the majestic Kanchenjunga clearly.

Hello All,
I have four confirmed tickets for Darjeeling Toy train on 28th November, 2019.
Unfortunately my wife due to some of her official work will not be able to make this journey. Hence I want to take my brother in her place.
My question is do we need to change the name ? If yes, what is the process ?
Would be really thankful for any suggestions.

Actually toy train is governed by IRCTC norms so please ask at the counter but they seldom check the tickets they just make a head count. But it's safe to change the name or buy a new ticket.

I'm trying to book this train on IRCTC I'm told there is a joy ride service leaving Darjeeling at 16:20 however for the day I want to book (9th October) this train is not appearing on the website. Is this a glitch or do some days have less services than others?

Last March we travelled by full route toy train(From new jalpaiguri to Darjeeling) and simultaneously have a journey by coal hauled Darjeeling- Ghoom- Darjeeling joy ride.
When you make online booking for joy ride please note use starting station code "dj" and destination station code must be used "djrz"
After all there is no need of prior reservation for joy ride...but it is advisable for full route ride(Train no:52541 njp-dj)
