We visited specifically to see Kinlock Falls. It did not disappoint! The falls are beautiful and easy to find if you have the coordinates. The climb to and around the falls is not easy, but that limits the number of people able to get there, which I like. I plan to go again and take my nieces and nephews.

Beautiful nature, we visited in June 2020, hiked in sipsey river , stayed in Corinth recreation area in yellow hammer loop. Drove bikes to a lake, beach, and neighboring firefly loop. Both loops have RV and tent sites, water, electric hook ups, bathrooms and bathhouse. Yellowhammer has boat ramp and a lookout to a lake view. Hosts are nice. Only negative side was a grill - fireplace set up, first evening my husband fell after his foot got in a side of a grill, second night i started going down , head first so I put my hand on it and burned a side of my hand, also fireplace wasn't on a flat surface.

Bring your camera and bathing suit. Beautiful falls and river. Check out the online maps to choose your hike.

We are 60 & 70 years old and NOT avid hikers. Went on a couple of the easier trails and had no problems. Nice waterfalls! It was hot, though, so bring water and wear sturdy shoes. No problems with bugs (June 2019).

About a 1.5 mile hike, off the beaten path hidden within the Bankhead National Forest is a hidden waterfall along Caney Creek! It is not an easy find, but so worth the walk! Be prepared to play under the waterfall

Drove 24 from Decatur to Moulton and picked up 33 in Moulton to 278 to Double Springs. Very scenic road with mountains and forest. Off of 33 I drove down to Brushy Lake to look around. Very good roads to travel on for an adventure ride.

We drove over from Memphis for the day to do some hiking. It had been raining in the area for a few days, so we were hoping for some good flow at a few waterfalls that we planned to hike to. Holy Cow!! This place did not disappoint! We hiked to Caney Creek Canyon, Parker Falls and Kinlock Falls. Each waterfall was unique and absolutely GORGEOUS!! The parking is terrible as these trails are basically on the side of the road, so go early if you want a decent spot!

Wonderful campground, good for RVs/trailers and a neat tent loop, too. Full hookup. Nice lake for swimming, boating, too.
Watch out in the woods for chiggers. My husband gathered wood (allowed) and broke out in several ITCHY bites a few days later.
Near town of Double Springs. Not too busy in summer while we were there.
Can reserve some sites online, but may want to just wait until you get there, too.
The whole area is so pretty. Lots of hiking in this forest. We were only passing through so we didn't get to take advantage to too much.
We did go to the lake and beach. Nice facilities - we drove from our campsite because we had things to bring, although you can walk or bike if you want.
We had site 18, near lake but really no lake view. Several pull-thru sites but they are kind of curvy so my husband thought it might be hard to place our truck and trailer without kinking it a lot.
Decent bath building that we used in Yellow Hammer loop. Only one shower, but it was adequate.

We stayed at the Clear Creek camp in the forest. The workers were exceedingly nice, but they were all out of state people, and knew nothing about the park.
The sight we were given was a pull through but so steep our front wheels were off the ground and had to be braced.
We stayed three days here because there is a beautiful waterfall I wanted to hike to, only no one knew where it was or had even heard of it. The entry gate had no pamphlets or information. I tried my gps for two days and drove all over the forest (two tanks of gas) and could not find any signs or any information. I did find a couple of trails (one took me down a ten mile one lane gravel road) that were so muddy and washed out I gave up. They also had no signs, or even pointers on the trail when it split, so I got turned around a couple times. Come on guys put up some SIGNS!
The campground itself had a bike trail that made a very good hiking trail, (way to bumpy and worn out for a bike) that leads to the swimming hole, I’d guess a mile maybe a mile and a half one way. On the way back there is one sign that says hiking trail short cut to camp ground, so we took it. Yep, half way in it split up into three trails with no sign, then again later with no sign. It took me twice as long to get back, but it was a nice trail. When you got to the road, again no indication of which way to go to get to the camp. (go right).
I met a ranger late Friday who told me the ranger station had maps. But of course when I got there Saturday it was closed for the weekend. Sigh. So if you go, go to the ranger station first, on a week day and get information, it’s a BIG area. Many square miles worth of forest.

Absolutely gorgeous! It's one of nature's breathtaking sceneries. What a hidden gem with so many hiking paths, camping, and easy places to explore. Been to many places around the US, but Alabama has one of the best here!

Very scenic drive and all it cost was gas and lunch. I made a road trip from Decatur on 24 South to Moulton and then 33 South to Double Springs and then bared left onto 195 (Do NOT turn on 278,, ONLY cross over it and bare left on 195) It's a weird intersection with 33, 278 195 & 25, study your road map. Took 195 south to Manchester and Jasper. At Jasper drive down 78 ALT and find something to eat. After eating Go back up 195 North to find the Y intersection to 257 North to Macedonia. Your will see a Chevron gas station directly in the top of the "Y" and turn right. 257 North to Macedonia & Arley then road turns into 41 North back to Decatur.

How do we find the newer Pine Torch Church? We got to the original and the cementary and could see a building further back but no way to get to it. Any help would be appreciated. Are their any ranger stations close by?
Thanks for any info.

What is the best driving route through this forest to see fall foliage? Thanks!
كُتب بتاريخ 30 سبتمبر 2016
You can't go wrong with any of the roads. Foliage is great on all of them. It is still early though--not much changing going on just yet. I would give it at least three weeks to see peak colors. I live nearby and would be glad to give you color updates--just post a question in a couple of weeks. Keep in mind that some roads are paved, but most of the ones in the deep woods (Sipsey Wilderness part of the Bankhead) are not. They are good, graveled roads, but can be dusty/muddy. You may want to drive your least favorite vehicle (LOL).

Planning on visiting over Labor Day weekend. I called the Ranger Station but no answer. Would anyone know if I could visit that weekend and if the Ranger Station would be open?
كُتب بتاريخ 27 أغسطس 2016
Ranger station is hard to get on the phone. They are helpful once you do. I believe the Ranger Station is located on Hwy 33 in Double Springs. The Rangers will be riding the parks during the holiday weekend.

Would it be convenient to tent camp at Bankhead National Forest and rock climb at Yellow Bluff? If so, which campground would be best? We are trying to find camping accommodations where both hikers and climbers can enjoy the local area.

I spoke with a friend who works for the forestry service. She has never heard of Yellow Bluff. She said you can camp pretty much anywhere in the forest but said to be very careful with campfires because everything is so dry. I live in the forest and it's beautiful! You will love it here! Plus, it's near Lewis Smith Lake, the second cleanest lake in America. Great for skiing, canoing, fishing.

Lakeshore Inn is in Double Springs near most of the hiking trails. It is right on the lake and has a restaurant and bar. I can't tell you much about the actual hotel as I have never been inside. It's older. There are other hotels in Jasper, AL which may be nicer and are only a 30 minute drive straight down Hwy 195. There are two very nice campgrounds, Corinth Recreation Area and Houston Recreation Area. We love Corinth and have taken our camper there several times. They have areas for tent camping as well. There are also camp grounds in the Sipsey forest (part of Bankhead) that are specifically for tents. There's a Forestry office on Hwy 33 just out of Double Springs where you can get hiking info. There are also some Facebook pages that can provide info. One is called Hiking Bankhead National Forest. Hope this helps!

Corinth Campground (in William Bankhead National Forest) closes for full camping on 01 November each year. After this, it's mostly just day traffic--picnic or walking along the lake and walking some trails.

Are there any sections of the lake that you would recommend for paddle boarding or is this river best suited for canoeing/kayaking? Thanks!
كُتب بتاريخ 25 أكتوبر 2015
From my experience, the lake is generally well-suited for canoeing / kayaking and paddle boarding (it's a fairly calm lake)--though you won't see many paddle boards on the lake.
There is plenty of room on the lake so boaters should not be an issue for paddle boarding (and the locals are usually very friendly and courteous so as to look-out for canoers / kayakers / paddle boarders. For putting-in (if you aren't doing so from a private dock), I recommend you use the Corinth Campground -- it has nice facilities and is centrally positioned on the lake. If you are farther south, near the dam, there are some nice areas there for putting-in and paddling around as well.
Hope this helps!
