We made a spontaneous stop at this museum while we waited for a different attraction to open. It rivals other well-executed state history museums that we have visited. We appreciated the exhibits about Alabama's indigenous peoples, since we had not come upon that information in our travels. (Note that related artifacts are currently in a repatriation process.) Also note that the interactive children's exhibit hall is closed for renovation.

The building is beautifully maintained -- go to the second floor (there is an elevator to the left of the entrance) and find out about the story of Alabama. There is no entrance fee. The museum covers the story of the American Indians to today, the exhibits are of very high quality. There were 4th grade classes present when we visited. There is a separate room for interactive activities for children. You can easily spend 1 1/2 hr at this museum. The museum is across the street from the Capitol.
Don't miss it.

My kids loved every room of this building.
There is a hands-on kids room. Played checkers, dressed up, typed on a vintage typewriter, dialed on a rotary pay phone,….saw different types of cotton. Read touching stories next to photos of soldiers who died too young. They had a section on Hank Williams, Bo Jackson, Civil Rights, agriculture, sports, & all things Alabama.

We did the voices of Alabama on the second floor they have a gallery on the 3rd floor also, but we didn't venture up there they had a hands-on kids center but it was closed for an event when we were there. Thet also have a room talking about the ecosystems across Alabama & one talking about the wars. Idk how much those would entertain kids, but I know the voices of Alabama has way too much reading for small kids. We enjoyed it & had it to ourselves that day which was fine with us. We took our times watching the videos reading the info just taking it all in. They have a couple free spots in a lot across the street from the back side, but they go fast. Have bathrooms and a gift shop but it wasn't open when we were there.

It's a great starting point for tourists visiting Montgomery for the first time. It's the Museum of Alabama that was the highlight for me. Do not pass this up thinking it's just a building housing the state archives. It's much more than that. Also, it's free to the public. They have free (but limited) parking in a lot behind the building on Adams Avenue, and next to the MOOseum. We visited later in the afternoon on a weekday (and towards the end of my trip). I wish I had spent more time in this building.
We were automatically greeted to warm & friendly faces when entering the building. The gentlemen at the visitor area gave us a map and went over all the key areas to visit starting with the first floor. We started in the Statuary Hall which has a life sized "Hiker" statue. This one is commemorating Alabamian foot soldiers in the Spanish-American War. There are bronze busts of historical figures. The most recent additions are two equal voting rights activists, Pattie Ruffner Jacobs and Amelia Boynton Robinson.
The second floor exhibits were all very informative. There's a hands on gallery for kids in Grandma's Attic. The "Land of Alabama" has displays and a short film of the state's geography and resources. I found the "Alabamians in the Great War" exhibit very interesting. There were a little over 85,000 Alabamians who fought in the war. About 2,500 died fighting in France. There's a unique display of trench art. There were some very skillful & decorative displays of a helmet, and some personal items made by servicemen to pass the time in between combat. Some items even showcased metalworking skills. These were much more elaborate than just a doodle on a piece of paper. A very cool part of the collection.
The best exhibit by far was "Alabama Voices". It's a Smithsonian quality exhibit that needs a revisit. I didn't get to go through every single voice, but I will next time. You start your journey by entering left into this exhibit. It was a much larger exhibit than anticipated. It starts you off in the 1700s and goes through the events that shaped Alabama. There were about 21 or 22 audiovisual areas that start a narration (The Voices) via motion detection. There are artifacts and documents throughout. They did a great job putting together this exhibit.
It's definitely worth a visit!

The second floor is where all the "good" displays are. It contained an extremely well-done history of Alabama, laid out in chronological order. The rest of the building was mainly full of portraits and an interactive room for children.
The two gentlemen we met upon entering could not have been any more friendly and helpful. It is also free to visit and park.
I am thinking it took my daughter and I about an hour to tour everything, but you could easily spend two or more hours if you read more thoroughly read the displays than we did. Photography is allowed as long as no flash is used.

The Archives and Museum are across the street from the Capitol so you can go to both! While the museum isn't huge, it's very well done.

The thing to visit in this large building is the history museum on the second floor. It is quite large and nicely done.

History-loving teen was so happy here! The exhibits offer information that is understandable to a wide range of ages and educational levels (there are lots of hands-on activities for younger children). Very interesting and honest portrayal of Alabama’s history.

Great artifacts and information about the WHOLE history of all peoples in Alabama. You should plan a good hour and one half to read and review all the information in the many galleries. The main gallery if full if soci history and details about the life and times if all Alabamians from prehistory to black live matter movement. Quite impressive for museum lovers!

About how long does it take to see the museum?
كُتب بتاريخ 27 يناير 2018
I think most people would be happy if they spent 2-3 hours there. Some people who like to hear all the audio portions and read all the printed information might spend 4 or even 5 hours.

I have a 73 year old father that I would love to bring down there to visit. Do you rent wheelchairs? How hard would it be to get him close enough to the entrance? He can walk but gets really tired easily. Please give me any informaton that will help me out during my trip.

Hi Terrie! Thanks for your question. While we do not rent wheelchairs, our entire building is wheelchair accessible. When you arrive, pull into the circular drive at our rear entrance on Adams Avenue. There is a ramp there and you can drop your father off right at our door. Free parking is available in a lot directly across the street from the rear entrance. After signing in at the front desk and picking up a museum guide, an elevator will take you to the Museum of Alabama on the second floor. Convenient seating can be found throughout the building and exhibit galleries. I hope that you and your father will visit soon! Please let us know if we can be of any additional assistance.
