If you have the time, it is absolutely worth driving from Selma to Montgomery to follow the March to Montgomery path. Selma is a bit run down, so you won't need to spend a ton of time there, but there are several places worth visiting at least once, especially the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The drive takes about an hour total, and there are tons of civil rights tour stops in Montgomery to check out.

The distance is about 45 miles from Edmund Pettus bridge to Montgomery on route 80. The highway is pretty much flat and you can see cotton fields along the way reminding you of the pre-cursors to the Civil rights march. Along the way are many historical markers of the march and there are some National Monuments along the way. But, on a Sunday they were closed.
It is good to reflect on the events that happened along this highway and get a perspective on the freedom we enjoy today.
You can drive all the way to the Alabama capitol in Montgomery and also visit the Dexter Baptist Church.

My advice is don't go! Nothing to do in this town! Worst place I have ever lived! Since the 70s the town has gone from bad to worse!

We started at the Edmund Pettus bridge in Selma and drove from there to Montgomery. Walking across the bridge was a neat experience, and it looks very much the same as it did back in 1965. In Montgomery, we visited the interpretive center there. It was mostly closed due to Covid, but we were able to get an informative brochure and also a stamp for our National Parks Pass. We learned a little more about history and civil rights thanks to our experiences here.

Load up and take the route. Each stop (campsite) is marked, so you can use your imagination. A fantastic drive into history.

So, yes visit and walk across the bridge. Most things were closed but you can drive around and see the outside stuff.
I’m so ashamed by how dirty and run-down Selma is! What happened to keep America Beautiful? So much litter lines the routes approaching the bridge.! I really can’t understand why more area is not part of the National Parks service because the sites are not well cared for IMHO.?

We visited Selma first, then with helpful advice from the NPS Center staff, followed the trail to Montgomery. We had beautiful weather but hurricane winds had hit Selma just days before, and COVID limited access to some places. We still had a good visit and feel we better know and understand what the Civil Rights marchers accomplished. The NPS route is well marked - seeing leads to greater understanding

We followed the route from the Pettus Bridge to Montgomery. We did check out the campsites but the Interpretive Center was closed due to the virus. Very interesting what these men and women did. Let's hope the bridge is renamed someday soon. It's way past time.

We did this drive going the opposite way, ending at the Edmond Pettus bridge. When doing the drive, there are many spots along the way to visit: four campsites, a Memorial to Viola Luizzo, and most importantly, the Lowndes Interpretive Center. Also note that Selma and Montgomery themselves have some places in the cities to visit also.

Visited this bridge as part of human rights road trip.Walked across, read about its History.Underneath the bridge there is a walk through the woods. This was a very eerie place for me as the woods were used for many lynchings.

My husband and I are hoping to walk the Selma to Montgomery trail to really soak in the history of the area. Do you know of any landowners that may be open to us pitching a tent on their property? We don’t need to light a fire or anything, but would welcome a place or two to crash near the trail as we follow the footsteps of those before us. Thank you for your help.

I’m an experienced cycle tourist and I have just driven from Montgomery to Selma. My feeling is that it would be unpleasant but not suicidal to ride the road. There are wide shoulders but traffic moves fast. Putting it differently, if it’s a pilgrimage then go ahead and do it. Otherwise I would recommend a different ride as it won’t be fun.
I was a part of the march on March 26,1965 as a US Army MP. We were there to protect the marchers and as the very last persons of the march. Our 5 ton wrecker was equipped with a 50 cal. machine gun aimed at the crowd that followed behind . The real irony to this is that the soldier manning the weapon is a Great-Great Grandson of General Edmund Pettus.(PFC Richard Edmund Pettus
of Glendale, Virginia. There are 3 pictures clearly Identifying this as fact in the Pictorial Life of M L K Jr. (1997)
I offer this information as History of the past . The fight for human dignity never ended

Wow, the rear gunner was a decedent of the namesake of the bridge. I wonder how he feels about his role in history then and now.

I have to do the route backward (Montgomery to Selma) . Can you still see the historical markers and the interpretive center with the campsites if you’re going in the opposite direction? (Montgomery to Selma as opposed to Selma to Montgomery)

You sure can. Most stuff will be on the right (north) side of the roadway.
