Sketchy… as former home owners here, this beautiful town is not the safest place, know this and act accordingly. It has so much potential, amazing wildlife and landscape but the lack of police presence makes this town dangerous. The locals will warn you, heed their warnings. Be smart, don’t walk alone at night, don’t be flashy with your valuables, ie cell phones, cameras, lap tops, jewelry. Keep it simple, and keep your wits about you and you’ll be fine. Some locals are wonderful, some are aggressive, listen to your gut instincts. The surfing is advanced, the rip tides are seriously dangerous. If you’re not a good swimmer, nor a good surfer, be careful. I don’t recommend swimming alone. This town is a colorful Caribbean town, if you go know what to expect

Playita ideal todo público. Tiene una onda super particular y una mezcla que vale la pena venir a vivirla. Ideal familias, parejas, amigos.
Agua transparente, casi sin oleaje ideal snorkel. El pueblo tiene muchas opciones y para todo tipo de turista. No es necesario pagar ni consumir en ningún lado, la playa está totalmente libre el ingreso .

Como chamar isso de praia? Sem faixa de areia descente,sem lugar para sentar, sem nada de bom,apenas lixo e esgoto. A vila não tem tratamento de esgoto, como todo o país, enche as ruas sem pavimentação de lama quando chove, muito mosquito e nenhum cuidado do município.

Stayed at Blue Conga hotel /rooms. Such a great spot just off the edge of town. . Great people that run the place , especially Stephanie “, superb lady. “Rooms are clean and comfortable, good hot showers and soft comfy beds. No air cond in our room but with the ventilation and fan our room was perfect. Great deck to sit and have your morning coffee, and hammock for afternoon snooze. Thank you Stephanie for being such a good host

Der Strand ist ein Witz, hier und da Müll!
Der Ort selber ist ein Sammelsurium von heruntergekommenen Bretterbuden und Schotterpisten!
Ich habe gedacht es ist ein Witz… hier ist Bob Marley wieder auferstanden🤣🤣🤣🤮🤮🤮
Am besten den den Müllhaufen links liegen lassen und gleich weiter nach Cocles Beach fahren!

All propaganda most likely posted by those pesky Canadian business owners! I surf, the waves were total bunk and the rips are DEADLY! There was no suitable water with any visibility for snorkeling. No Caribbean food at restaurants that we could find. Pot smoking dreads everywhere that still believe that Gringos are only for scamming on. Nothing but hippies, white girls riding behind dreads on cheap scooters every where. No true Police presence. After 3 hours we were sorry we wasted our time but stayed for 2 days too be sure we knew that everything about this Wonder Full Chill Caribbean Tropical Paradise is all fabricated to get you there, TOTAL DRAG, Never to return.

Puerto Viejo has many food options, it has a very lay back relax vibe. Is more for chill and relax, enjoy nature and the cristal waters. Don't come here if you expect big hotels, this is a very local organic place.

This beach is good for snorkelling, so take your snorkel kit with, there is some slippery sections so best go with wet shoes

Hello!
We're going to be visiting Puerto Viejo beach (or some other nearby beach...looking for white sand, blue water and safe swimming for our 12 year old son). We haven't booked a hotel yet. Looking for recommendations on a hotel or resort for 3 people (preferably with air conditioning). Thanks so much!

We visited in December and the weather was perfect. We stayed at Villas Lomas Del Caribe. By car you are 5 minutes from the beach. Or, walking may take you up to 15 minutes.
The Villas (6) has a pool. We didn’t have kids with us and didn’t spend a lot of time on the beach. We didn’t see any white sand beaches while in Puerto Viejo. You will enjoy!

Ciao Mario, la zona è decisamente tranquilla, devi solo stare attento non ai locali, ma ai turisti. Molta gente viaggia senza soldi e poi si arrangia come può.
Un unico problema serio, piove 300 gg all'anno, noi siamo stati 10 giorni nel periodo migliore, non c'è stato giorno che non abbia piovuto, e anche per ore, non erano i classici monsoni.
Zona abbastanza caruccia, come la Costa Rica, in 7/8 anni si sono raddoppiati i prezzi.

Hi, we are visiting Costa Rica in May and are desperate to see turtles. We read that manzanillo you can see them in May but were wondering whether it would be better to stay in Puerto Viejo or in manzanillo itself. Would you have to book a tour guide either place? Thanks!

My suggestion is to stay in Puerto Viejo, since Manzanillo is about 20 minutes driving from there and you can easily move up and down the coast. I suggest you to book a guide as well, because Manzanillo park is not that easy to visit, there is a identifiable path in the first 700 mothers, then it’s all deep bush. Up on the same coast there is the tortuguero national park, have you thought about that. I have been on the opposite coast as well, in particular, very close to Samara, there is a beach full of turtles’ shelters. There are a kind of turtle’s association taking care of their reproduction.

Hola. Nosotros iremos el año que viene y en nuestro itinerario tenemos visita a : San José, Tortuguero, Arenal, Monteverde, Manuel Antonio y Guanacaste. No tengo incluído Puerto Viejo pero la verdad es que me llama la atención y quería saber si merece la pena visitarlo o si será similar a las playas que veré en Manuel Antonio o Guanacaste. Seguramente alquilaremos coche y podríamos ir por nuestra cuenta, aunque no sé si hay mucha distancia desde los sitios de mi itenerario hasta allí.

Hallo, uns hat Puerto Viejo sehr gefallen. Es ist ganz anders als Manuel Antonio. Der Strand ist eher von Einheimischen als von Touristen besucht. Dafür ist der Sand nicht so weiss und es hat grosse Wellen... Es ist wild aber wunderschön. Ganz besonders lohnt es sich die Tierauffangstation Jaguar Rescue Center zu besuchen.
Ich finde es lohnt sich auf alle Fälle!

Hi - just starting my research into staying (probably) in Puerto Viejo for about a week-10 days, after touring Costa Rica for about a week. We are looking to stay beachfront at a nice swimmable beach, but I have found various ideas of what people think nice beaches "are" - obviously - I don't waves outside my door, I want to be able to go into calm water and swim every day. Thoughts please and thank you? We picked Puerto Viejo because of the vibe of the town and to be close to it each evening. I think Cahuita may be too small, plus from what I'm reading the beaches there aren't as calm? Would love any thoughts, thanks so much!

The waves are seasonal. April through October, the waves are normally calm, with many days being idyllic, lake-like conditions on the Caribbean Sea. However, September through March can be VERY ROUGH. The weather can be fairly brutal, and the waves can rival many famous Pacific Ocean surf spots. Choose your season carefully, or do like I do and visit at different times of the cycle to really get the experience.

I am taking the bus to Puerto Viejo from San Jose. I am staying at The Lotus Garden and the only address indicated is - across from Salsa Brava. How far is this from the bus station? Can I walk, if so, in what direction or take taxi/local bus, if any. What is Salsa Brava? Thanks in advance.

I am planning to take the bus from the airport (SJO) to my hotel in San Jose (located at Avenida 11 between 3 & 5th Streets) so where should I get off the bus (or ask driver to let me know) so that I can walk the remainder of the distance or catch a cab? I am budgeting on travel so that I can splurge on other activities. Thanks again.
