To be honest, I am torn between ONE star and TWO stars. So I decided to be generous. The visit wasn’t TERRIBLE, but it wasn’t memorable except in a regrettable way. ONE star on an “international” scale, TWO stars on a Costa Rican scale, and the museum, like the Mercado Central, is FREE TO ALL.
The best of the museum is the charming building. The artwork is highly forgettable, but to be honest, I feel that way about most contemporary art, anywhere.
To sum it up, IF YOU ARE NEARBY, or have easy transport by Uber, taxi or private car, stop in for an hour or two. The museum is quiet, hence a respite from the hustle and bustle and HEAT, of this part of San José (although not air conditioned). Knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t cross the city to visit this museum, unless you have some time and no better option to fill it.

Great to get a bit of Culture and history of Costa Rica! Was told to check this location out and was pleased. Very interesting art work from old to new. Talented artist across the country make up this wonderful Museum.

Nice little museum about a 10-minute walk from Parque La Sabana and approx $3 U.S. Uber ride from Holiday Inn Aurola. Lots of interesting exhibits spread throughout this small venue. Be sure to visit the Gold Room upstairs - a holdover from when this building was part of the airport. Oh, and did I mention it is FREE!

Absolutely amazing experience. Great people, gorgeous architecture, engaging sculptures and bonus my daughter and I got to be part of a pastel art project for the day

This museum is located beside the main park, La Sabana. Decent size and make sure you check out the open area at the back. Free admission.

The facility highlights guest artists in addition to its Costa Rican art. I would have preferred to see less of the guest focus and more Costa Rican art.

Beautiful little museum which once upon a time was a small airport and you can see the old control tower at the top. Three main areas, a beautiful mural on the top floor and below is a great mix of modern and older art, with great variety, plus an outdoor area with beautiful sculptures. There were also young people sitting enjoying drawing the sculptures and relaxing, it wasn’t busy at all and had a lovely, tranquil feel, exactly as you’d expect at an art museum.

Holy cow it’s a great place in the historic airport building. Art indoors, out and built into the amazing woodwork in the building itself. Great variety of mediums - art installations in fabric and video in addition to sculptures, drawings, paintings and photographs. Pleasantly surprised to see art from as recently as 2022 on display. Certainly a long way from an old, stuffy, stereotypical art museum. Plan for 1-1.5 hours & take a taxi or an Uber unless you are already near La Sabana park or the University of CR.

If you want to see local art and some interesting exhibits this FREE museum is the place to go. The building itself has a fascinating history. The location is in a huge park in the center of the city. We wanted to donate to the museum in appreciation but they don’t take donations!

It's for free. Do not expect a large museum, though, in case you are used to the large European museums. It's basically composed of a large main hall at the entrance, two small rooms at the North side, about a Southern room sectioned in three, two rooms at the Eastern side and a foyer looking West. Add to it, there's a beautiful room upstairs, reached through a lovely staircase and narrow passages that look over the main hall. Can be complicated if you suffer from fear to heights, but the view of the Waiting Room of the old airport is worth it.
