‪After two earlier trips we returned to South Africa to have a trip with Chris. This time we brought the kids with us to make this a greater challenge (3 and 6 years).

Previous experiences with Chris were so positive we had to include him in the trip again. Why? His knowledge of multiple topics is extraordinary. Plus he is a great guy, a treat to have around you, is concerned about safety and mindful of your wishes.

I mentioned knowledge and I will give you background on this. History of South Africa and human kind, geology, Johannesburg area, Pilanesberg, animals, plantlife.

Also, we witnessed Chris’ interaction with the kids and he makes topics interesting for them. Making stories of plants tangible, telling details of animals and their behavior, identifying different kinds of animal poo and tracks, which are very important if you are on game drives.

If you are looking for a guide with extensive knowledge, a great sense of humor and someone genuinely interested in you Chris very well fits that bill. You will not be disappointed!‬

‪I can’t recommend Cashan Africa highly enough, we had an amazing experience from start to finish. We travelled from England with our 2 kids (12 and 14). Penny was brilliant at arranging everything, offering various options snd accommodating some last minute changes with no fuss.

We were picked up from our hotel in Johannesburg at 8am by Chris who drove us to Pilansberg where we stayed at the excellent Kwa Maritame Lodge. Chris is a fantastic guide and great company. He has amazing knowledge of the wildlife, nature and the history of South Africa. He is really good, easy company and was brilliant with our kids, particularly our son Billy (12) who is mad about wildlife. He really encouraged his interest and animals and Billy loved talking to him.

Over the 4 days we went out on a mixture of game drives with the lodge and with Chris in his 4 x 4. On each drive we saw something different so it is definitely worth going for a few days. Pilansberg is a great option for families as it is only 2 hours from Johannesburg. It has the big 5 and everything you’d want to see without being too big.

The Kwa Maritame lodge was lovely, a high standard of accommodation within the park itself. Great location and excellent food. We had a brilliant time from start to finish, Penny even arranged a visit to a crocodile and reptile centre on the way back to Johannesburg. I highly recommend booking with Cashan Africa - a great service and very reasonably priced. The memories will stay with us forever!‬

‪Dear Chris, What an amazing experience! I could not have asked for a better guide/companion for my visit to Pilanesberg. I am so grateful to have had 3 relaxing days to enjoy everything that the Park has to offer. Some might consider you saved "the best" for last (the roaring lioness and the elusive leopard) but I loved every moment on days one and two that led up to those exciting sightings on our final day. You showed me that there is so much more to a safari than "The Big Five." I made a tally as best I could of all that you shared with me: at least 24 different birds (probably many more!!) 20+ animal species; vegetation that feeds the animals, grooms the animals, protects and cures ills. What I didn't expect was the peacefulness of this experience. You shared a very special place with me that felt all the more meaningful knowing how much it means to you and how connected you are to the place. Thank you for being so generous, taking on a solo traveler and sharing your excitement, expertise, amazing knowledge and all your wonderful stories of Pilanesberg. I hope I will be back again soon! Thanks again! Beth C from Maine, USA‬

Hello Beth, gosh what a touching review/message. I am humbled by your comments and the fact that you appreciated all of the park's offerings, mostly I guess that a real safari is not about chasing down the "Big 5" as if there were a basic requirement to meet! You are absolutely correct about the gift of being in the peace and beauty of the Pilanesberg. It is a great privilege and no matter how many times I go there it is fresh and interesting and often very rewarding. I most certainly am not able to '' save the best for last"! But we can just thank our good fortune to have found those gorgeous cats. (more pictures to follow) I am sure we saw many more than 24 bird species but I must confess I am not always as assiduous in identifying each and every bird as when I have a serious birder with me. Not everyone enjoys the intensity of hardcore birding! Given that the park has 356 identified birds on its list, a large proportion being endemics, you are certainly correct there! A good list should take you close to 100 on a casual visit, ok the migrants have largely departed by now. The plants are extraordinarily diverse in number and their dispersal across the park. Different habitats are home to different plants and grasses and the animals that eat them! The best thing is that you had 3 days and that increases your chances of a rich sightings list of all that the park has to offer. A single day is not a bad option, this week we had folks on such a trip and they did well too. I enjoyed talking to you very much about the park and your home country and its fabulous landscapes. The east coast and the Rockies have always drawn my attention, I have a growing list of places I find I should visit abroad! I thank you very much for your thoughtful review and look forward to hosting you and your family again some day soon! Best regards Chris Green

‪If you’re deciding who to book a tour with, or whether to go on one at all - absolutely without a doubt book with Cashan Africa. Every single part of this safari was phenomenal, Chris’s knowledge, hospitality and ability to spot wildlife is unparalleled. We were absolutely fascinated by Chris’s retelling of the geology and culture of the local area, even on the drive out of Johannesburg we were amazed at how much firsthand historical knowledge Chris had, it made the most average street corners actually seem interesting! The Pilanesberg park itself is beautiful and to experience it properly we absolutely recommend choosing Cashan; from learning about the behaviour of animals, safely navigating the park, spotting rare animals and hearing about the vast array of plant species, Cashan really makes the park come to life. ‬

Hi Mayacars! Gosh thanks for your very generous review! I am so glad that you two had such a richly interesting tour! You know the old saying " do what you love and you wont work a day in your life" ? I think it may apply to me around the Pilanesberg and the Joburg stories! Haha I also ''blame" my parents, they made travelling and especially the Game Reserves an exciting adventure whenever we went there. Pilanesberg is unique, beautiful and a mightily rewarding park to visit, its geology is fascinating as is its rich human and animal history. There are a few good books that I use to understand more plus having worked there for so long helps me too! I am happy that we saw it in its gorgeous late summer finery, the big elephant bulls were a major plus for me! And of course all the other players in the wild such as the Lions, Gitraffes, antelopes, jackals, brown hyenas and all the plains game. Not forgetting the birdlife! 356 species can be found there! The black rhino we saw was a special for me, they are rare and all rhinos are under pressure. The Pilanesberg is indeed worth a visit and is close enough to JHB to make day visit worth the drive. I stand by this statement. although like most safari guides i will also recommend a 2 or 3 day visit for a more complete experience. We can arrange game walks and night drives for those trips. I wish you both much success with your own outdoor business, the ocean and surf are a wonderful 'office' like the game reserves of the world! Thank you very much for your review it means a lot to us, Chris and Penny

‪In early January, I did three tours with Chris Green. All flawless. He picked me up at the airport, and we drove to Pilanesberg to do the three day safari. His knowledge and conversations were always enlightening. We also saw many animals, and, due to the time of year, baby ones too! I was dropped off at the Lucky Bean guest house in Melville. The next day, I did the Soweto bike tour, (not with Chris, but nice too). Then with Chris we did the
Cradle Tour and the day after the Discover Johannesburg tour. Both extremely nice too. Everything I have read in the few reviews around this one is very true. A bunch of great experiences. Excellent insights.‬

Hello James! My apologies for the delayed response! A big thank you for your reviews, it is always great to get feedback from our guests and of course we try to incorporate suggestions and adjustments as they come in. I love the Pilanesberg and I remember very well the animal babies! It is a special time of the year and it is over fairly quickly, they have to adapt to life with predators very quickly to avoid becoming part of dinner! The small animals do adapt well and soon enough they grow up and the predators have to work much harder for their food. I am glad we were able to cover more than just the park too, Johannesburg and its connection to the economy and prosperity of South Africa are all intricately entwined, as is our history. Not all of it is glorious but we have evolved as a nation and continue to grow and learn. We like our guests to do the Soweto bike tour, it is a fantastic way of seeing some of Soweto and meeting the people. The Cradle is a firm favourite of ours, the landscape is beautiful enough but beneath its surface is a treasure trove of extraordinary caves, spectacular fossil discoveries and clues to our ancient common ancestry. It is a World Heritage site for several good reasons! Isn't it remarkable that within such a small area as Gauteng is that we have such a wonderfully diverse collection of sites and stories to share with our visitors? I have lived here for most of my life and I continue to be delighted by it and the many wonderful people I meet on a daily basis. Both our guests and my fellow South Africans! Thank you very much for taking the time to post your reviews and comments about your tours with us, We wish you all the best for the year and hope to welcome you back for more explorations in the near future! Best regards, Chris Green

‪We'd had a superb Jo'burg tour with Chris last time we visited from the UK, so when we found ourselves with 10 hours stop over at OR Tambo (Jo'burg airport), we contacted Chris and Penny at Cashan for ideas - and they put together a special and different tour of South Africa's nearby capital, Pretoria.

As before, the whole tour was faultless and Chris went out of his way to be helpful, picking us up from a different terminal, looking after our bags, working out we needed a lunch stop, and delivering us back to departures in good time for our flight home. We saw the Union Buildings, toured the embassy area, the impressive University, the markets around the railway station, saw the Voortrekker Monument, and had a moving visit around Freedom Park and the musuem there.

The thing I like about Chris is that he has a vast amount of knowledge - about safaris/camps/guides, wildlife, birds, plants, history (from the start of mankind through to current), and senses how much you can absorb. He is passionate about all things - as you can see when he describes some of the aspects of Africa's history. I would almost visit South Africa just to get his insights and explanations - it makes the whole visit so much more memorable.‬

Hello, Skyjockey! I am really humbled by your wonderful review and careful insights into the day we had in Pretoria recently. Of course Penny and I are delighted that you booked again after your last tour with us, it speaks volumes, so thank you very much! It might sound trite but a few things about this business of guiding really count, one has to like the work, you need to enjoy meeting people and one must learn continuously, a good guide must listen carefully to the questions asked and think about why you are being asked, whatever it is. Above all, as guides we need to ensure that the process of the day fits the time available, as well as 'fitting' in enough to be coherent but also to be fun and entertaining! It was a great pleasure to see you both again and to hear about your safari! I am very fortunate to do this and to enjoy all the stories and linking the giant pictures together. We love meeting all our guests and appreciate it so much that people from around the globe make the huge trek down south of the equator to our country! Many thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts on the tour, we are very glad it turned out so well, and look forward to another 'long conversation' in the future, it was a really good day out ! All the best, Chris and Penny

‪Chris picked us up from OR Tambo, was very friendly and helped us with all our bags. Right from the very beginning, we can tell that he has a very good grasp on the area, the animals, and the people. He helped us check in and started a game drive right away. In the 4 days that we spent with him, we never saw him tired from driving, explaining, and sharing his expertise. He was very patient and accommodating with all our questions. His years of experience shaped his profound view of the game reserve and the animals. He knows even the smallest details of everything - how each animal is part of the bigger wildlife picture, the names of the plants and how they are used, and how each insect and leaf contribute to the biome. He knows the area, the staff and other guides and everyone knows him too. We were very lucky to have seen the big 5 and numerous action-packed encounters while on the road. We brought home beautiful photos, deeper appreciation and knowledge of the animals and wildlife and unforgettable memories. ‬

Hi Elaine! Thank you so much for your wonderful review! You are so kind, it was a very good safari for me too. The animals played their part but they also gave us a few challenges! It took us until our last drive to find the leopard to make up the full 'big 5'! The Pilanesberg in the high summer is a very beautiful reserve and being summer we had the arrival of the Wildebeest youngsters, and the Zebra foals too. We were lucky to have seen Rain the Cheetah mother with her subadult cubs, learning how to be real hunters, the first day they paid more attention and were rewarded with a baby wildebeest. However on the second day they were more interested in playing much to the frustration of their mum! We saw her chase after a zebra but the chase ended on failure. That is how it goes in the wild! I am so glad we covered so much of the park and that you went on the night drive and saw the lions and rhinos in the open plains. We spoke about how rewarding a 3 or 4 day safari can be, you can enjoy your time in the bush. The rich game populations in the Pilanesberg are such that there is always something to observe on safari, from tracks in the sand, to the insects, birds and trees, the park has it all. I enjoy the friendships I have made over the many years I have been fortunate to have worked up there and we like to meet up and exchange our information and sightings. Thank you and your family for being my guests and asking me all those questions, it was great fun and I am glad that you enjoyed your safari with me. The "360" lens will be working hard next week when I am back in the park! We wish you all a fantastic 2020 and look forward to maybe seeing you again! Chris and Penny

‪Chris is an extremely well prepared guide, a true nature lover and a great animals-spotter. I learned a lot about the park of Pilanesberg and it's gorgeous environment, I have seen many beautiful creatures and had a very pleasant day! Good service of picking up and drop off as well.‬

Hi there Martina! Many thank you for your review and message! I am really happy that you had such a good day out in the Pilanesberg! I certainly enjoyed it as well, all the new baby animals are being born especially the impala, wildebeest, Zebras and Kudu. Of course these are the most obvious ones being plains animals over the next months we shall see others arriving. I am glad you liked the scenic beauty of the park. It is one of my favourite parks of all, and I am so lucky to have the opportunity to go there and share it frequently with our guests! We have had plenty of rain in recent weeks and it remains rainy across the highveld, so grasses will grow tall and the trees with put on more growth and the ground water will be replenished, it is a time of good fortune for the reserve and others in the region. Many thanks and best wishes fro the coming year Chris Green

‪Travelled out to Sterkfontein caves and Maropeng with Chris.

He is a mine of information--historical, geographical, botanical and geological.

Also, a very pleasant guy--humble but enormously experienced and well informed.

The caves are impressive in a way, but I've seen better stalactites in China and better cave lighting in Gibraltar. What was more impressive was Chris's knowledge of medicinal and other uses of plants growing outside. Now I know what to put on an infected wound in the African bush.

The carse is a strange landscape. You do feel close to the early hominids running around there. It feels like a landscape full of ghosts.

Maropeng is a wonderful building and a great location, but the museum itself feels a bit tired. There isn't that much to see. Good message though: we are all human, no matter what we look like, and we came from Africa.‬

hi there nmi_munro, Thank you very much for your review and observations about the caves and Maropeng. Correct on both counts! The Karst is rugged for sure .."A landscape full of ghosts"!! WHAT A BEAUTIFUL IMAGE! . I find it a dilemma at times to go into the topic, the caves are a major part of the tourism product and in addition are a very popular venues for school tours. The guides perhaps do not always explain clearly enough the reasons for why the caves have so much historical damage to the stalactites and the relatively dim lighting and so I get questions such as yours. Very valid ones and vital to explain so thank you for mentioning them. It is one of the great ironies that the Sterkfontein caves had their stalactites mined by the emerging gold industry and from what remains they were surely pretty impressive. It is a fact that the greatest 'treasure' there is arguably not the stalactites at all! It is the wealth of fossils that those caves and the many other caves across the Cradle have produced. The lighting is dim deliberately so to reduce the growth of algae on the remains of the stalactites. The global problem that caves such as these face is the volume of carbon dioxide breathed out by the large numbers of visitor that provides the ''food'' for algae and fungi. I am glad that you enjoyed the plant and wilderness skills part of my presentation, it is intriguing how adaptable and resourceful humanity was and still is! What might look like a bleak and hostile place is often not so at all once one comes to know and understand how to use the available resources! I try to knit this strange and deep time world with our modern one, we have many challenges and responsibilities, part of the Maropeng museum's role is to present this narrative and send us away with 'points to ponder'. A good museum has the responsibility to challenge and educate as much as it must inform and entertain us. Thank you very much for your observations, it was really interesting talking to you and discussing these ideas! Thank you too for posting your review, we need clients to make the points that you have done, the precious and productive nature of discussion so well put! I am spending this weekend out there again! Such a fascinating story to share! Thank you so much Best wishes, Chris

‪Chris Green has a wealth of knowledge about the area on the way to Pilanesberg, as well as, the park itself. This makes for a fact- and fun-filled day. Chris’s love for what he’s doing is apparent and his enthusiastic guiding makes for a day very well spent.‬

Hi Malindi123! Great to hear from you and thank you for your review! It was a good day out in the Pilanesberg for me too, "the start of summer is the end of winter" as the saying goes! In that transition zone all kinds of changes are happening every day, so often guides get curious and smiling responses to their enthusiastic explanations or the sighting of a 'minor' but still cute creature in the bushveld, It is true, yes indeed, we love the work we do! It is never boring and of course we get to share it all with our guests. Pilanesberg is famous for the variety of game and birdlife it has to offer but the landscape, plants, reptiles and insects etc -- all are part of the experience. Right now the park was very dry until 24 hours ago when they had their first rainstorm!! It was most welcome water and of course more is needed but at least they got a good soaking yesterday afternoon. Thank you for your thoughtful review, it was a pleasure meeting you both and sharing the stories of the park and the changes in SA since a couple of decades ago. All the best for the coming winter.. snow will fly soon enough my sisters inform me. As it should be too! Our best wishes Chris and Penny
