‪Staff service levels superb. Running a business of this nature, depending on infrastructure that is falling apart must be a nightmare yet at all times it was dealt with professionally by all concerned. They went out of their way to assist passengers who needed transfers along the way. For those of us who had the time and saw it through to the end, we effectively got an extra day at no extra cost. Food was superb and met some very interesting people. Try and do it at least once!‬

‪We were greeted warmly at the station on the Friday afternoon, although a little chaotically. I was not invited on the tour of the yard which was disappointing but by no means the most disappointing part of the trip.

We were briefed by Mr Vos who in no way warned us for what was to come. Boarding was impressive and the compartment was luxurious and more than I had expected.

However, we travelled less than 50kms by nightfall and spent the night in a siding in Germiston with all sorts of people from local settlements walking around the train. After 24 hours we had not even left the greater Joburg area. The constant stop/start (mostly stop) was continually blamed on the poor infrastructure of the rail network with a different excuse every time.

After repeated stops in unattractive areas, we reached Kimberley a whole 24 hours late on Sunday with some passengers very tense as they had connecting travel which meant they had to be in Cape Town that night which we were clearly not going to be. We had been promised a tour of the Big Hole so we were bundled into buses and rushed off for a whistle-stop tour. Our tour guide said, “You’re about to experience the 2nd Kimberley diamond rush!” Some passengers were taken to the airport to fly to Cape Town, thus missing most of the train trip.

We were then told we would miss the Matjiesfontein stop promised on the itinerary as we would be passing through in a rush in the early hours on Monday morning. To our surprise, we hadn’t even reached Matjiesfontein when we awoke on Monday! Another rushed visit for 15 minutes so that Rovos could tick off that they’d done it.

Then when we arrived in Worcester, the remaining passengers were told that’s the end of the train trip, bundled into a bus and driven to Cape Town! No excuse offered this time.

It must be said that the Rovos train itself was super - the food, wine, service, attention to detail - all great and one could argue we received 3 days for the price of 2?

However, the whole trip was severely tarnished by Rovos allowing us on a trip they must have known would be severely interrupted and delayed significantly. It just felt like Rovos Rail wanted the money and didn’t care about the inconvenience and frustration it caused its customers.

The last bus trip was the final straw. Surely the wonderful culmination of the trip is the last leg from the mountains to Cape Town and a triumphant arrival in Cape Town - not to be - it was a bus ride.‬

Dear @ James D Thank you for your review albeit a disappointing read. The challenges all trains utilizing South Africa's railway network have been experiencing are something we have been openly communicating about in our reservations correspondence, in media interviews and across our various online platforms. Overhead power cable theft, load-shedding and poorly managed infrastructure have certainly presented us with operational issues which we are doing our best to be transparent about and confront. That being said, we sincerely apologise for your disappointment and for the frustration felt. Our train management team and our operations team at head office performed logistical somersaults to try and keep to schedule so please know that we felt frustration too. I assure you that we are not operating journeys because we "want money". We are running our short trips because not every trip experiences delays - there are many that run quite smoothly - and we still want to provide guests with an exceptional experience. ‪Let’s start with , stunning train, friendly staff , service and good food.

We did a cpt pta trip , to start we were bussed to Worcester as train arrived late , then missed first excursion, then arrived late in Bloemfontein, missed that excursion, spent 8 hours parked waiting for driver , departing we were told we will not make Pretoria. That we will be bused from Germiston , then sorry we only Meyerton, eventually we were disembarked onto the tracks in Sasolburg at 930pm, bussed to Jhb arrived at hotel circa 11pm.

We never got off the train once , spent most day three changing travel plans and disembarked feeling disappointed and frustrated.

There was a complete lack of accountability and compassion from the train manager , throwing the blame at others , when surely Rovos rail could be more proactive.

It should have been an experience to enjoy , but sadly the frustration created makes it very difficult to justify this trip.‬

Dear @ CliveS504 Thank you for taking the time to leave a review albeit a disappointing read. We sincerely apologise for your disappointment and frustration. We tracked your journey with our navigation system and performed logistical somersaults to get the train moving but with little success. I can assure you that our train managers are deeply compassionate and upset if there are delays so perhaps the operational challenges held their focus leaving room for little else. We are sorry if you felt there was a lack of empathy but we can guarantee that was not the intention. ‪The Rovos Rail Pretoria to CapeTown trip is one of the most amazing train experiences I ever had. The service and food on board are beyond 5-star levels. The reliance on the South African rail system is however a big drawback. We arrived a day late at our destination. Rather choose tours in neighbouring countries.‬

‪A trip on the RR was always on the proverbial bucket list and it was worth the wait. It was nothing short of continual silver service from an incredibly well trained team, with the wonderful Daphne at the helm. The team’s attentiveness, attention to detail, thoroughness, warmth, friendliness and desire to strive for perfection truly earns the Rovos the title of most luxurious train in the world. It’s in the small things - like Mara and Gideon remembering what you like to drink and having it on your table when you arrived for meals, the incredible array of snacks and drinks continually available, the insanely delicious brownies at high tea, the beautiful gift and card placed on our bed to celebrate our honeymoon, the lovely toiletry bags gifted and the meticulous pressing service. A special thank you to our dedicated cabin hostess, Lebo, for meeting our every need and doing so with such grace and a smile on her face. A big thank you to Chante, Jegardie, Silverman and Innocentia for their amazing service. I loved dressing up in evening wear after two years of Covid life - it felt like such a grownup treat! What really struck me was what fantastic value for money the journey is and how transparent it is that the staff clearly love their job! An enormous adventure that I would repeat in a heartbeat! A big thank you to Carmen De Jongh at SA Rail for booking this magnificent trip for us. Dealing with her an absolute pleasure.‬

‪We did the Pretoria to Victoria Falls trip and it was pure magic. Not a single moment doubting their complete control of the trip. Being reliant on Transnet and Zimbabwean rail network is a recipe for disaster but amazingly they handled it to such an extent that it never diminished the comfort and enjoyment of the passengers. We were even delayed in Zimbabwe by a derailment in front of us. There will be delays over which they have no control but the train is a hotel so what difference does it make whether you move or don't. Units very comfortable, staff more than friendly and helpful and the food excellent. The only negative is the open coach at the back that gets hit by stone throwers between Pretoria and Bela Bela. It was also frequented by the smokers and heavy drinkers. Overall an experience that we will never forget and would dearly love to repeat.‬

‪Rovos Rail is truly a pocket of excellence, and are unfortunately reliant on Transnet for the rail infrastructure and other elements of rail service. However they go above and beyond to keep guests informed of situations, as they arise (and there are many challenges to overcome), and they go above and beyond to ensure guests are well taken care of aboard the train. We had the exact opposite experience on the Blue Train who dropped us off after 11pm in Johannesburg after they too had challenges. We were not from the area and were totally terrified, particularly as it was after curfew. Quite a different approach to customer service and safety. I would choose Rovos Rail any day! On board the staff were totally customer focused, they worked as a team, and nothing was too much trouble. The wine pairing was a lovely touch and made meals most interesting, while the food portions were tasty and well sized. They were happy to oblige personal preference and offer more if you requested it. Meals had a full course vegetarian alternative much appreciated. Roan Vos is very hands on, and we enjoyed the tour of the yards in Pretoria. We are looking forward to doing another trip with Rovos Rail, the question is which? Thank you for a great experience.‬

‪What an amazing experience!
From the time we checked in to the time we stepped off the train it was magical.
Five star all the way with friendly service and attention to detail.

Our suite was very comfortable and the staff made sure that we did not lack anything. The electric blankets were switched on for us every evening.

The each dining experience offered a five course meal with wine pairing. Not even to mention the freshly baked bread and pastries.

The lounges were relaxing and all the cocktails and snacks were available.

Even though we could not reach Pretoria Station by train due to cable theft, Rovos Rail arranged for an air conditioned bus to pick us up and within an hour we were safely at the station welcomed by Mr Rohan Vos himself.

Definitely an item for the bucket list!‬

‪Good food & accommodation on train. Bad experience as we travelled from Pretoria to Hoedspruit. Train hooked broken cables and we were delayed for 7 hours before arriving in Hazyview to exit. We were then transferred to a taxi bus and driven through Townships & a road full of potholes for two and a half hours to Simbambili Game Lodge by a driver racing like a Lunetic and feared for our lives should a tyre burst!! We missed our flight from Hoedspruit to our Lodge as well as our afternoon game drive. Never again will we do this route from Pretoria to Hoedspruit on Rovos Rail with all the damage being caused by vagrants living on stations next to tracks. It is really scary especially when the train comes to a standstill for passengers to sleep at night😔‬

‪I have travelled on many famous train journeys around the world from Europe to the USA and Rovos remains the most luxurious from accommodation, service and cuisine by far. The experience is the perfect way to travel through Africa and cannot be highly enough recommended.‬
