Well maintained gardens. Great photo opportunity with the Mandela statue. Some other bits and pieces of history can also be observed from the Union buildings. Great view of Pretoria from the top.

Tourists take this monument for granted, as something that has always stood here. However, the Mandela monument has been standing on this place for only 9 years. Previously, there was a monument to the hero of the Second Anglo-Boer War, the pre-war Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa Barry Herzog. He was as much a symbolic figure for Afrikaners as Mandela is now for the black majority.Replacing Herzog with Mandela was a symbolic assertion of power. The 9-meter bronze statue of Mandela weighing 3.5 tons is assembled from one and a half hundred parts that are not visible from afar. Mandela opens his arms vaguely resembling the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro. Not by size, by posture. From an artistic point of view, the statue is not of particular interest. Frankly speaking, not a masterpiece...

A short walk up through parkland an beautifully maintained gardens, a lovely statue of Nelso Mandela, beaming and holding his arms wide.

Mooi groot beeld in het park dat voor het presidentieel paleis ligt. Mooie tuin eromheen aangelegd. Wel jammer dat de oorlogsmonumenten niet heel goed onderhouden zijn.

We had a lovely time at the gardens with the highlight being seeing this massive statue of Mandela. There are photographers on-site that will capture great photos for a fee.

So amazing standing next to this big statue of Mr. Mandela. Nice garden to take break and view city now in spring time with all these jakarandas

Imponente statua di bronzo, alta circa sei metri e posizionata nella zona alta della città di Pretoria all’interno di un parco molto ben tenuto e di fronte al palazzo del Governo.
Statua molto somigliante. Posto sicuramente da visitare.

We were here on 02/25/2020. A beautiful sunny day thet would have lightened up his heart. He has a beautiful view over the city and stands with wide open arms (wide open, just like his heart). We really enjoyed our time here. The garden is well kept. The gardeners we saw do a fine job keeping everthing tidy.
If you're looking for souvenirs, just go all the way up the stairs to the Union Buildings. There are stands with local artifacts. The prices are fair, but you can also bargain.

I was amazed by the size of this statue, it is actually bigger than what it looks on pictures, amazing craftmanship!!!

What a lovely site and sight - the statue of Nelson Mandela in front of the Union Buildings. This is quite a remarkable tourist attraction to visit and we enjoyed this experience together with foreign friends.
