This past weekend I went to visit the Union Building. What a splendid way to spend a Saturday. There is so much history and beautiful heritage to explore and learn about and also the view from there of Pretoria is absolutely breathtaking. They also have a beautiful jogging trail for your fitness bunnies. I am so happy I went

The Union Buildings is always impressive to see. Sadly ordinary visitors are not allowed anymore in the buildings. The gardens are looking well , but dry for this time in winter.Various monuments are there to be seen. Please note gardens are closed on weekends.

From afar these government buildings with the adjacent park below them look great. But as I visited on a Sunday I never was able to get a close up view or walk in the park. The road in front of the buildings is closed and the guard told me it was unsafe to walk in the park. So all I saw were passing glances as I drove by the buildings. Historically many important things happened here, but alas, there is little to see.

Impressive building but that is it, nothing much else to see. Over the road to gardens and Nelson Mandela Statue. There is a good panoramic view of Pretoria from the top of the steps.

This pretentious government complex began to be built in 1910, with the formation of the South African Union. Inspired by ancient Greek architecture, the author of the project, British architect Howard Baker, wanted to build such a modern Acropolis. Therefore, to visit this place, you need to climb the Meintjieskop hill - the highest point in Pretoria. Rising from the center, you will see the statue of Mandela 2013 with open arms. They symbolize the unity of the people divided by apartheid. The semicircular shape of the Union Building with two wings on the sides has the same meaning. However, the side wings of the complex, built a century earlier, do not imply whites and blacks, but the reconciliation of the British and the Boers after the fierce second Boer War. As well as two domes symbolizing two languages - English and Afrikaans. If the building was being built now, there would be 11 domes. Inspection of buildings is possible only from the outside, because the South African government and the office of the President uses this building. This is not the Bundestag in Berlin, where you can walk with a tour from bottom to top....

A long rectangular garden with its distinct feature being a "terraced one" (of about 4 levels and a further slope downward which I didn't bother but where there's an equestrian statue just seen from a distance), also to be seen in this colorful one of many flowers (not too many colors but many flowers of a few chosen colors) is a larger-than-life statue of Nelson Mandela with a smiling face & outstretched arms (which I would say quite accurately portrays just what this great man was like in his life!). And yes, not just for the garden itself, what you come here for is also a "nice panorama" of Pretoria (not as good as from the Voortrekkers Monument though with a higher view than here visited later in the day); and also be sure not to miss a great view of the "long & imposing-sized" structure of the Union Buildings which kind of over-towers this garden from the garden's terraces (the "all-inclusive view" of the Structure with both its semicircle parts & the middle connecting part by looking back up from like the lowest terrace). And just somewhat of a not-so-pleasant aspect of my visit was seeing these signs of historic grievances & such by the country's indigenous people (actually with their own small vegetable garden & a few tents nearby right in this big garden on one of its terraces).
On a day trip from Johannesburg, it was just about a 45-minute ride on the Gautrain from Johannesburg Park Station to Hatfield Station here (also possible to get off at Pretoria Station) followed by another short bus ride to this site; and yes, with a small rain coming down on my arrival at the site (having to take shelter in like a small outer alcove which is part of the Union Buildings although itself not for the public to enter inside), I was just quite thankful that the rain was just a short one to be able to leave my shelter and enjoy the garden by going down one of the two stone stairways.

Unfortunately the Union Buildings' gardens (including the Mandela statue) and access road (Government Ave) is now closed over weekends and public holidays - permanently. We used to cycle along the road in front of the building which was quiet and safe to enjoy the lovely views. But this Sunday (5 June, 2022) when we rode up Government Ave we were met by locked gates and a guard.
What a pity, as this is a stunning public space which should be open and accessible to all - especially over weekends when people are able to enjoy it.

Enttäuschend. Der Park war voll mit etwas arg zweifelhaften Leuten. Alles sehr schmutzig und vermüllt. Schlechter Zustand. Keine sicheren Parkplätze. Ganz schlecht. Schade.

Can we picnic as a group in the union buildings garden during the week. Is there a cost? Do we need to book?

No cost just be careful, do not want to become a statistic. Would rather go to botanical garden for picnics safer because its closed of from the outside.

There is no need to book, the place is open to public except the government offices side. However, I suggest you move as group and do not carry any valuable items in the evening, My TIP- Always be observant of individuals moving up and down the parks , all day long. You find them in almost all the parks. So try to stay away from parks in the evenings

Hi, We are visiting in September and staying at the Sheraton hotel, close to the Union Buildings. Is it safe to walk and visit the buildings and gardens ?
MartinJBarnard
Pretoria, South Africa7 مساهمات
Yes it is fairly safe during daytime. Church street is a major feeder route and very busy so be careful in crossing the street. The Sheraton hotel is directly across from the Union Building on the southern side and a good one to stay at. I am sure the hotel would offer help as well. Hope you will have a splendid time.
