I celebrated my 60th birthday on board the blue train travelling between Cape Town and Pretoria but we actually all got off in Johannesburg as we were delayed at some points in our journey…
Myself and Husband found the train very comfortable we were in Suite 18 we found the bathroom was well equipped. It was a good hot shower. The beds were extremely comfortable and we really enjoyed that time.
The dinner carriage was just lovely. We were served high-end quality food, the waiting staff were joyful and we had an excellent saxophone player on board to entertain us and the drinks flowed very well.
The observation carriage was delightful so nice to watch South Africa go by but slightly disappointed that we didn’t see any animals of any kind at all, I don’t know why we think we would see elephants and giraffes to be honest, but because you’re travelling 1000 miles in a train, you think it might be likely to see something and we are in South Africa
We met some lovely people on board. The staff were attentive, and respectful…and on my birthday they sang and danced me happy birthday so wonderfully … overall it was a trip we are glad to have travelled and a great experience all round.
We did depart the train in Johannesburg as we were behind in our timings, but the train staff notified all our transfers and everyone’s transfer was waiting for us at Johannesburg train station when we arrived They also got off all our luggage and it was handled very very well, luckily for us we were staying in Johannesburg so we ended up with just a short journey to our hotel.
I’d like to thank all the staff for all their wonderful hard work it really was an experience and delightful

After the Rocky Mountaineer in Canada our feelings are mixed. It's a beautifully maintained train but everything is very small. However, we slept well on comfortable beds in our en-suite compartment. We had water issues twice in the 3 days but South Africa is a vast country and they are limited with where they can refill.
There is nowhere to get fresh air when the train is in motion. The food was great, the staff were lovely. The stop at Kimberley Diamond Mine was welcome and very interesting. I guess we were disappointed we didn't see herds of wild animals, just miles of flat lands seemingly going on forever. B
Is it my favourite train journey? Maybe not, but I'm all for try it yourself and see.

We had built up high expectations of our trip on the Blue Train. Started badly as the train was delayed and we had to sit in a hotel for 3 hours waiting for departure. It was an elegant train and the room was naturally tight but not surprising. The staff were tired and lacked enthusiasm so the service could have been better. Never saw our butler but of no great consequence. The views on the journey were severely scarred by the multitude of shanty towns that we passed where rubbish was everywhere. The stop to look at the old mine was not worth it. Wouldn’t recommend this experience given the high cost.

A friend and I took the Blue Train from Cape Town to Pretoria. A good experience overall, but not great.
In Cape Town the passengers met in the departure lounge, wine and canapes on offer but not enough seats for everyone.
Onboard, the carriages were a bit worn, my cabin had seen better days e.g. bent slats in the blinds, TV (camera on the engine) not working, scuff marks on some of the furniture, the butler had given me an incorrect number for contact, etc.
The food was okay but, as a vegetarian I found it uninspiring and the portions were small. The wines were very good but the beers (actually, just lagers) was average. It was possible to order snacks, cocktails, and tea during the day so that was welcomed. Afternoon tea wasn't well advertised so we missed out on the first day.
The Observation Car at the rear was the best place to sit during the day to watch the world go by - with a drink or two! in the evening, I tried the Club Car (towards the front) for a brandy and cigar. More upmarket decor than most of the other carriages.
We arrived in Pretoria early so the train did a slow circuit around the city. But we still arrived early at the station. This was disappointing as it had meant a rushed lunch and no chance for the afternoon tea. We did receive a couple of small gifts, a Blue Train shot-glass and a miniature carriage clock.
Overall, the trip was enjoyable but too expensive (especially as there was a 50% supplement for singles). The next time I'm in South Africa I'll try the Rovos for comparison.

This was on the bucket list and I am glad we had the experience. We were really concerned about delays etc so had a day in Cape Town as a contingency.
Enjoyed the experience but not sure it provides the luxury that it suggests.

We spent 2 nights at the Blue Train recently on a trip from Pretoria to Capetown.
It was a quite disappointing experience if compared to Rovos Rail.
Except for the music (a very good saxophonist), the bathrooms and the very comfortable beds, everything was average - the Blue Train is definitely not a luxury train.
I must acknowledge that some members of the staff were quite helpful however generally speaking there is no proper management and staff has no professional training. Highly expensive for what you get.

The journey takes time, and we were grateful for that. We enjoyed every moment of it and used the time to unwind and reengage with the African landscapes we watched pass our windows as we enjoyed ro exceptional service. Esther, our chef was professional and deeply caring. She made the difference.

The suites and public rooms were very good, the food excellent and the staff service of a high standard.
BUT PLEASE, take seriously the warnings given about the timings on the journey. Although the Blue Train is Government owned and run they do not take seriously the tourism potential as the train has no precedence on the tracks and must give way to freight traffic. For example, on our trip we were due in Kimberly by 2.30pm for excursion to the diamond mine, we actually arrived at 10pm-no trip. The train did actually move out of the station but stopped in the middle of nowhere and there we remained all day. Missing both estimated arrival times in Pretoria of 2pm and 6pm we ended up getting off the train and enduring a 5 hour bus trip to arrive at our hotel at 1.15am.
The promised merchandise of Blue Train moments was virtually non existent, we were told it hadn't been restocked as the next train didn't run until New year. Obviously no thought had been given to us, the fare paying passengers.

Dear yorks5267,
Thank you for choosing The Blue Train Experience from 19th – 21st December 2024, traveling from Cape
Town to Pretoria. Since 1946, The Blue Train has been synonymous with luxury, hospitality, tourism, and leisure. We take
immense pride in offering our guests unparalleled, memorable experiences. A key part of our commitment is delivering personalized, exceptional service at all times, ensuring that each guest feels valued— as you, in turn, become an ambassador for our brand.
We would like to extend our heartfelt apologies for the irrepressible delays you experienced during your recent
journey. The challenges encountered were primarily due to unforeseen disruptions within the rail network,
which significantly affected The Blue Train’s operations. We deeply regret the impact this had on your
experience.
Please allow us to provide you with the following feedback regarding your journey: The Blue Train operates on a shared rail network, which, while offering everchanging scenic landscapes and convenience, also presents complexities. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to predict or prevent delays and interruptions that can arise along the way.
On 19 December 2024, our departure was significantly impacted by an unexpected emergency occupation of
the tunnel in Worcester, which caused an immediate disruption. In order to prioritize guest safety, the train remained stationary in the affected area until we received clearance to proceed. Additional complications arose in Makwassie, where a stationary goods train, caused by a loss of overhead power, exacerbated the delays, resulting in further disruptions to our schedule.
Due to a series of disruptions, The Blue Train arrived in Kimberley later than planned, leading to the cancellation of the Kimberley excursion. Transfer shuttles were promptly arranged from Kingswood to your respective destinations to ensure minimal disruption to your onward journey. We deeply regret the inconvenience and disruption caused by these unforeseen circumstances. We understand the importance of your time and comfort, and we greatly appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigated these unforeseen challenges. Please know that our team worked diligently to manage the situation with the utmost priority on your safety and well-being.
We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed the food and onboard hospitality. Thank you for your kind words about our staff; they will be thrilled to know their efforts were appreciated.
Please kindly send us an email at info@bluetrain.co.za to allow us an opportunity to further engage with you regarding your Blue Train experience.
Warm Regards,
The Blue Train Management

Are we glad we travelled on The Blue Train from Capetown to Pretoria? Yes. Would we do it again? No. Did we feel we got value for money? No. Why? South Africa’s famous Blue Train promotes itself as luxury train travel with fine dining experiences. Sadly, that was not the case when we travelled. As part of the pre-booking arrangements, we were asked to indicate if we wanted first or second sittings for lunch and dinner, which is also mentioned in the itinerary still advertised on The Blue Train’s website. Unfortunately, we were only served one sit-down lunch, which was on the second day. Our first day's lunch - help yourself to plates of food on a table in the observatory carriage - was very disappointing. Some of the food was cold, the 'squid' inedible - other guests made the same comments - and the food tasted like heated up food that one could buy from frozen boxes in a supermarket. And the lunch on our final day was worse - help yourself to plates of food on a table but this time only small bread plates. People went back for seconds but the food had run out. Hard to believe for the prices we paid. We weren't the only disappointed guests.
While very aware of the lives of locals experiencing obvious poverty and hardships in the villages we observed from the train, we - and other guests - are also very aware of The Blue Train's reputation, expense and expectations of chef-prepared meals for what we were paying - and what was outlined to us as sit-down lunches in their promoted itinerary. In fairness, our dinners were chef-prepared quality, and the wines were superb. And the staff were friendly.
I later wrote to Management asking why the unexpected change in lunch arrangements, and they replied with a ‘Letter of Apology’ – great they replied – but unfortunately, Management did not address our concerns and explain why all the guests did not receive the advertised lunch dining services we heavily paid for.
The observatory carriage, with large viewing windows, was a plus but passengers should be aware you are travelling in Africa where trains, for various reasons, do not run on time and you can often sit for a couple of hours going nowhere. One of the evenings, while enjoying a great sit-down dinner in the charming restaurant carriage – with all the guests dressed up – we looked at the train station platform for the entire time. Be warned but don’t let that stop you from enjoying the evening dining experience.
We found the single beds surprisingly comfortable – and you must expect the train to ‘rattle’ and not sleep perfectly – and we enjoyed our private little ‘lounge area’ when our Butler (one to each carriage of four suites) converted it from a ‘bedroom’ each morning while we were at breakfast. No complaints about those meals – very tasty and great choices.

I should love to be able to tell you all about the Blue train---however, we never made it. Due to scheduling difficulties with job assignments we (my daughter and I) had to ask to make some changes to dates. It turned out to be next to impossible to get anyone to reply to emails and as to getting someone on the telephone...well, we never did. The ONLY information that we got from the Blue Train was that we needed a deposit to re-schedule. In other words, we had forfeited our original deposit which they kept and they expected us to start from scratch and to re-pay simply for a request to change departure date--AND, by the way, to change the original one-way to a return journey. In other words, for the privilege of doubling our payment to them they were going to charge us another deposit--at flat rate on the now-doubled fare and with no credit for the deposit that they already had in hand and had kept!!
My daughter and I are no strangers to luxury train-cruise trips. We have been on the Venice Simplon Orient Express approaching twenty times (and other Orient Express/now Belmond trains as well)--and have more often than not used it as a train, to get from one place to another as our schedule demanded, rather than as an end-in-itself trip. A bit self-indulgent to be sure, but always and ever a truly lovely experience and for us no better way to get about Europe which my work often requires, so why not if I/we can?
The Blue Train personnel with whom we remotely dealt were condescending bordering upon contemptuous, making it crystal clear that they were doing us a huge favour by lowering themselves in order to deal with us paeons. This unfortunate attitude was surpassed only by the unmistakable rapacity of the company, all of whose employees made it abundantly clear that their only concern is taking us--and any other customer--for all that they can get and to give as little as they possibly can in return.
Perhaps the service on the train is worth the price--although it could in my eyes NEVER be worth the trouble. I shall never know as there is nothing I need or want on the Blue Train or indeed, by way of this experience, in South Africa either--a place I have visited more than once in the past. No more, however.
We were quite looking forward to this trip on the Blue Train until we had to deal with the people running it. My advice, if it is wanted: Have nothing to do with the sharp practice, arrogance and rapacity of the Blue train.
By the by, it has developed that I need to get from London to Northern Italy around X-mas and guess what? Yes, you guessed it! VSOE, Here we come (again)--and we look forward to seeing everyone on board again soon, as always!

Hi
I am a solo traveller and would love to take the blue train from Cape town up to Pretoria. At 50% in addition to the fare for solo occupancy it is a bit out of my price range. Does anyone know of an option to share with a fellow solo traveller to reduce the costs. I'm looking to travel in May 23 either the train on the 11th or the 18th. Thanks all

If you have had good service from anyone in particular, like your butler R500 -R1000 is reasonable.in South Africa. You can tip them directly, however if you have had great service from all the staff R1000 + per day in the envelope when you leave the train.

Those people who had been booked to travel during the last 6 months, how much notice did the company give you before your planned trip that it wouldn't be happening? We're due to travel in September and I getting really nervous about not having time to arrange alternative travel if required.

Our journey actually went ahead (3 hours late) but the train never made it to Cape Town due to overhead cables being stolen all along the route….we chose to depart the train on day 3 when we arrived at the silver mine and caught a flight from blue fontaine airport to Cape Town
We kept intouch with other passengers via WhatsApp and discovered the train never made it to Cape Town on day 4 of a 3 day trip all the passengers were transported off it and onto a coach to take them down to Cape Town
My advice …don’t take the train it is not fit for purpose the cables are always being cut and stolen we stopped at least 4 times for around 5 hours each time
And on most stops we could not get off the train for fresh air.
The staff were wonderful as was the food but the infrastructure and organisation was a joke
Take the time to read Read other peoples reviews scroll down they seem to keep the good reviews as the first ones you see
We actually claimed our flight fare and some compensation back from the blue train when we arrived back to the uk
Hope this helps

Hi, we were due to travel on The Blue Train on 10th March 2022 but they told us 14 days before (24th February) that it had been cancelled. I was told a refund would take 30 days. It’s now 5th April and I’ve still not had a refund. Has anyone else experienced anything like this and did you get a refund eventually? Thanks.

Michelle,
After our very bad experience on the Blue Train I made a claim on them for compensation.
It took a while but I eventually got a refund of half the cost of the trip.
My travel agent pursued it on my behalf
Good luck

Yes you can tip individually - however they are not like the cruise ships who really seem to push it - there is no pressure and they just look to be helpful and friendly
